I think Fry Sauce is a pretty American thing and lots of chains have it available but why don't the big chains like McDonald's, Wendy's and BK have it? It seems.so.popular at diners and places like Shake Shack. Just seems odd to me the big chains don't have it. I don't really eat at McDonald's or BK or Wendy's but sometimes I do stop for french fries. Maybe fry sauce is reginal? Is it just a west coast thing?

BK has/had their zesty onion ring dip which was my favorite until I stopped eating at BK.. that's the closest I've seen though.

Aaahhhh right, fry sauce - as in a sauce to dip your fries in? I had to read it twice to realise that's what you meant. At first I thought you meant like a stir-fry sauce! I love the idea of a fry sauce. McDonalds has the little containers of sauce for the nuggets, they could easily do something similar for fries. How good would that be?! What sort of flavours does Shake Shack have? I ate there a couple of times when I was in Singapore, but I can't remember getting any fry sauce. There is a chain here called Lord of the Fries. They have sauces for their fries. There is a list of what you can get: SaucesI love the description of the American sauce: "Our American BBQ sauce couldn’t more different from the American President – it's smooth, not full of crap and 100% vegan." Please note, they had this sauce back in 2016 - 2019, and does not specifically refer to the current President. Oh, and their food is vegan. I didn't realise this until after I'd had it multiple times, even after I had their mac & cheese balls.

Fry sauce? The only thing I'm dipping my fries in is Heinz ketchup. Never heard of it - Midwesterner here.

I’ve never heard of it. It could be because I don’t eat at fast food places though. What is in it?

I've heard the term "fry sauce" but I have never had any or had any offered to me here in Alaska.

Ohioan here. I’ve never heard it mentioned until a coworker said it and she lived in Utah. I think it is a regional thing starting out in the Idaho/Utah area. ??

It’s a Utah thing that has spread regionally, and it’s the default here. Tourists stick out like a sore thumb when they ask for ketchup with their fries, and/or have to ask what fry sauce is. 😂
At its most basic, it’s ketchup and mayo mixed together. Some places change it up by adding things like onions, pickle juice, or spices, or swap the ketchup for BBQ.
Personally, I prefer it with a bit of buttermilk, and a slightly lower ketchup-to-mayo ratio. I like my fry sauce to be a nice, light pinky-peach color, and slightly runny, instead of coral, speckled, and thick.

Maybe fry sauce is reginal? Is it just a west coast thing? Not a west coast thing, more of a Utah thing. I don’t think you’ll easily find it in So. Cal. For those wondering, it is a mixture of mayonnaise and ketchup. It is used as a dip for French fries.

You can easily make your own. Ask for a packet of ketchup and a packet of mayonnaise and mix them together.
I’m not aware of any chains that have it in Virginia or Minnesota, but I don’t eat a lot of fast food and if I do have fries, I either have ketchup or eat them without sauce.

I don't dip fries, so I never thought about it.
I'm wonder if it is because many of the chains contract with a company to make their sauces specifically for them, whereas, just purchasing Fry Sauce might be quite a bit more costly. I have on rare occasion seen Fry Sauce sitting with other condiment bottles in a casual restaurant.

I think Freddy's has it but I’ve never eaten it and had never heard of it before we went there. I don’t eat much fast food though so they could all have it and I wouldn’t know. I only want Heinz ketchup with my fries when I do eat them.

I’ve seen fry sauce at places recently and in stores. I don’t really love it but others seem to. I don’t know why the bigger chains don’t have it.

Lifelong Californian, I have never heard of fry sauce. We generally use ranch dressing here, or ketchup.

I have mixed just mayo and ketchup amd it isn’t the same. Obviously since it isn’t offered commercially there is no standard, but I think it is Mayo, ketchup and something like pickle juice but not exactly pickle juice. I love the one at Shake Shack, but it is a little thick. I hated what BK called fry sauce because all I could taste was mustard. The closest thing I have found to make is a sauce for patatas bravas. Interesting that it is in fact regional. I could have sworn I had it on the east coast, but definitely in diners.

Lifelong Californian, I have never heard of fry sauce. We generally use ranch dressing here, or ketchup. That is crazy. California is so big, maybe it is regional within the state? Shake Shack is all over the coast, they for sure have it. That is the only chain that I know has it. I think CFA has some variation of it, but I don’t eat there. I have been eating it in California for over 30 years.

I have heard the term but it’s not a thing in Southern California. We usually ask for ranch at a restaurant for our fries. At home we use ketchup.

We have a place here that make Belgium Frites and they have a delicious curry Mayo. The place you linked looks delicious, but I don’t know anyone who puts bbq on fries.

Sounds gross but it is so good you can buy it at the grocery store and I like it on breaded chicken or chicken Pattie’s at home.
