I stopped at an Arctic Circle earlier this week which made me think of it. That is definitely the kind of fry sauce I was thinking of. I really wish it were more widely available. It is so good.

You can easily make your own. Ask for a packet of ketchup and a packet of mayonnaise and mix them together. Iβm not aware of any chains that have it in Virginia or Minnesota, but I donβt eat a lot of fast food and if I do have fries, I either have ketchup or eat them without sauce. I donβt agree with that at all. Clearly that is the base, but there is something else in it. Different chains add their own ingredients to customize it. And of course, the ketchup that you use and the mayonnaise that you use influence the taste. Think Heinz vs Huntβs, Hellmanβs vs Dukeβsβ¦ each anre drastically different from the other. And of course there are dozens of brands of each.

I've never seen it in the States - both DH and I remember it fondly from Germany though Interesting - I live in Germany and was coming here to say I'd never heard of it. Most places here do either ketchup or mayo. What about Rot Weiss? It comes in a sorta of toothpaste tube and comes out as a red stripe (ketchup) and a white stripe (mayo). The kids loved the novelty!

Arctic Circle lists paprika in their sauce along with "spices" but no pickles. I bought a bottle to take home with us so I was reading the ingredients Paprika isn't typically in ketchup I don't think. We don't have Dukes mayo here. Only Hellman's and store brands so it is unlikely that the mayo would make that much difference. Ketchup obviously could because anything other than Heinz is awful. I am sure there are tons of different recipes, but the fry sauce I like at diners and local restaurants is not just mayo and ketchup.

Back in the 50's a bunch of us from the Junior High made a trip to the Tastee Freez after school. We were all hungry and had little money, so we pooled our money and bought a whole bunch of fries. The fry sauce was free so we really loaded our fries with sauce. By the time I got home I was sick to my stomach. I have never dipped a fry in anything since that time! Fry sauce was a staple when I grew up! (Idaho)

Ketchup + mayo = Thousand Island Dressing π Or dip dip as my grandkids call it π Thousand Island also has relish in it.

Never heard of it. Iβm not a big mayo fan, so Iβm not sure it would be improved by adding ketchup. Iβd give it a try if I was served it.

Never heard of fry sauce. Same. I have no idea what Fry sauce is. Now if youβre talking about dipping sauce for your chicken nuggets or whatever from Chick-fil-A or McDonaldβs or whatever then yeah I get that. Sometimes when I am out with friends, somebody order blue cheese for their french fries. Is that a fry sauce?

Blue Cheese is NOT a fry sauce.. blech.. although I would say Ranch is.. HAHA

Sometimes when I am out with friends, somebody order blue cheese for their french fries. Is that a fry sauce? Fry sauce is very specific sauce, it is orangey pink in color. If someone ordered Bleu Cheese for their French fries they would be dipping their fries in it, but it is still just a specific type of dressing. I have never thought about Bleu Cheese for fries though. I have seen people use Ranch, but for me ranch is for chicken fingers or onion rings or Jojo's.

I love blue cheese dressing for dipping French fries. Tartar sauce is fantastic too. Really anything other than ketchup.

I learned of it here, and the tv series Big Love. Maybe I like the acidity of ketchup? Fry sauce seems wimpy to me.

Is the place called Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers? I had to look it up and it looks like there are a couple in San Diego County. And the menu does have Fry Sauce on it. May have to go try it out. Are the steakburgers good? I think their burgers are pretty good (I usually get the patty melt, but that's because I like those - the steakburgers are good, too). I'm not a fan of their fry sauce, though! My favorite sauce for dipping is Raising Cane's sauce. So good. It goes on the chicken, the fries, and I use the bread to get the last tiny bit. Me, too! I find that stuff to be pretty addictive, frankly. That and Torchy's avocado sauce! (I know there are a few people here who know Torchy's Tacos!)

I've never heard of it being used anywhere locally. I'm in the Mid-Atlantic area.

Ketchup mixed with mayonnaise sounds π€’π€’π€’ to me. I donβt know if they do this in the UK, but often, when you order a burger in the US, they may put both ketchup and mayonnaise on the sandwich. So, I sort of get βfry sauceβ on my burger unintentionally. π

I live in Eastern Washington and one of our locally owned businesses has served fry sauce for as long as I can remember. There are also several places in the panhandle of Idaho that have it. Last summer, we ate at a burger joint on the Oregon Coast that had a regular and spicy version. Zip's? That's where I first remember getting it 30 years ago.

I'm not sure it's totally a west coast thing as I was born and raised in Rhode Island and we always made our own fry sauce aka pink sauce when we were kids....this was back in the 60's/70's....we mixed ketchup and mayo together. Then as we got to be teens, we started adding in things like sweet pickle relish and/or mustard. Moved to Florida in the mid 80's and still made my own version of fry sauce. It seems like it's only been in the past 10 years or so that I've started seeing it in some fast food and casual dining restaurants. I've also started seeing it on grocery store shelves mass produced by Kraft, etc...although I don't think they call it fry sauce specifically.
