Anyone a paper only card maker?

I would say I’m bi-modal. I do the Sheet Load of Cards every month, which patterned-paper-based cardmaking. I also get some Club Scrap and Paper Pumpkin kits. Even if you make alternatives with them, they’re still paper-mostly if not paper-only. Those also all make batches of about 6 to 12 cards, so they represent most of my output.

But I also have the things — blending brushes, some stencils, die cutter, dies, embossing folders, markers, watercolors. I think I pull some of those thins out about as often as not, but I’m more likely to make a single card.

In my time as a Pea, I believe I have observed that those who consider themselves mainly scrapbookers are somewhat more likely to make paper-only cards. I think I’ve even seen them referred to as “scrapbook technique” cards. The non-scrapbookers (maybe “never scrapbookers”?) seem somewhat more likely to bust out the techniques/use patterned paper sparingly if at all.

Crafty Al posts a new Sheet Load of Cards sketch on her youtube channel on the first of every month. The sketches use 2 or 3 patterned papers plus card stock to make anywhere from 6 to 12 (usually) cards. azcrafty here posts a challenge every quarter around the SLoC and opens a thread each month. I think currently on the very first page of the cardmaking board you can find the June SLoC, random older SLoC, and possibly May SLoC threads if you want to check them out!

I do both. I'm more likely to do just paper cards though. Paper is my favorite! I will add a litte extra to them like Wink of Stella, or enamel dots, or some gems. But, I do enjoy just using a paper collection to make cards!
And yes, I was a scrapbooker first. So that may be why.

I do still use dies and stamps but most of the cards I make are just patterned paper and purchased die cuts. I go through phases where I barely even want to stamp out sentiments so I might batch make a bunch, or print them on my computer, or use a pre-made set like Paper Rose or Doodlebug sells.

I am heavily influenced by Kristie Marcotte and Call Me Crafty Al. Both use sketches as a starting point. The Crafty Al Sheetloads are just a sketch that lets you have a lot of cards using one sketch, usually with only a couple of sheets of paper (kind of like the One Sheet Wonder concept, I gather). KM uses a selection of different sketches to make a paper pad disappear.

I'm in the process of using up a whole 6x6 paper pad with the latest Sheetload sketch, so all the cards will have the same basic design. Then I'll pull out a sentiment that will go with a bunch, and maybe a die cut image. I don't have matching ephemera because the paper is vintage. A stamped image tends to be my last resort, and if I do stamp I rarely color the image. I love a bold sentiment die cut for easy finishing.

I am a "scrappy" card maker. I find them so fun and easy to make. I love pulling out random bits to throw together on a card.

I entered this hobby as a stamping card maker in 2008. I started scrapbooking in 2016 and picked up card making again during the pandemic.

I am a mostly paper card maker... I am newbie at it... lol... I use the paper and die cuts out of an almost used up collection...

Like the 4x6 or 3x4 cut aparts and pop that on some matching paper and put it on a card front... lol

I am trying to do more inking and stamping and stencils.... but I am trying those on my scrapbook pages before I do cards with them...

This is my style too. Patterned paper, die cut or cuts and stamped sentiment. I don’t enjoy coloring and I have so many patterned paper pads I want to use up.

My style isn’t nearly as refined or good as yours though. I always love your cards. You have a great eye for color, placement and putting everything together.

I tend to gravitate to using just papers to make my cards- I will stamp a sentiment. I sometimes wonder why I buy all these stamps.

It struck me bout this thread that there are actually a lot of paper-only/paper-forward card maker Peas who seem to be sort of lurking around this Card making board. I know some scrappy card makers are more likely to share their cards on the quarterly sharing thread over on the general scrapbooking board and over here on cardmaking those of us who use the sheet loads sketches tend to share them on the dedicated SLoC threads.

I want to encourage ALL the card makers to feel welcome here! So many are describing their styles or the techniques they like to use and I'm realizing that I've never seen a card shared by them either here or on General Scrapbooking. Please come play with us! I have another question for the predominantly paper card makers. If I were to host a challenge day this coming CARDtober and themed it something like Playing with Pretty Patterned Paper, would any of you who don't normally join in CARDtober come play with me?!

as one of those lurkers - I don't feel like a 'real' cardmaker, just a scrapbooker who makes cards. It's not that I don't feel welcome here - I do - it's more that I don't feel like my cards are worth sharing here. I mainly share cards (and layouts) to get the sharing point. I'm not using cool new techniques or products that are likely to inspire others. My cards are very basic (as are my layouts).



I'm probably not going to be around to play much with Cardtober as I have a two week trip that I'm really really hoping pans out in the middle of October but I will definitely go back and check out the challenges later. I HAVE done cardtober in the past although I think I skipped last year so I might not be the intended audience for the question.

I thought this might be the thread where this news would be most appreciated, because I think some of the paper-only card makers use these sorts of things. As part of the "Joann-iversary" sale, AC cardmaking kits are 50% off -- about $4.50 for 20 card bases and envelopes with stickers, ephemera (die cuts), etc. Vicky Boutin and other designers.

Three of them should be winging their way to me shortly, along with some adhesives. I was good and resisted the few other things that tried to jump into my cart....
