I was diagnosed this morning. Actually urgent care because I couldn’t figure out why the left half of my head hurt to touch. I think they thought it might have been a stroke and they sent me to the ER. JOY.
I’m on the anti virals and am seeing an ophthalmologist this afternoon (I can see a rash developing on my eyelid).
Would love to hear any tips you have for managing this and the pain I’m sure is right around the corner. So far it’s just the left side of my heard/forehead and eyelid that are affected.
UPDATE My primary doctor said it’s not shingles. She took a swab, but believes it’s actually cellulitis. So for now I’m taking both the anti-viral and an antibiotic.

Yuck! I’m so sorry!
I was just reading an article yesterday about how shingles is becoming so much more common at younger ages, due to chicken pox being less prevalent due to the vaccine.

Ugh... I am so sorry. I hope it doesn't affect your eye. I am hoping that your pain is minimal.
This just might be the kick in the pants I need to get the shingles vaccine.

Oh no is right! Several years ago, I had a very light case on the left side of my face. Caught early, started meds immediately. Fortunately, it skirted around my eye so it did not affect my vision. I did see an ophthalmologist. The pain was tolerable but the swelling was bad enough I worked from home for a week. I was left with a small dent in the end of my nose, as well as a small scar through my eyebrow. No fun at all.
Later that same year, DH suffered through a bad case that affected his left upper torso/neck. He lost partial hearing in that ear as a result.
Hope your case is mild and the meds are effective.

I'm sorry!! I know they can be painful. I had them when dd was 6 months old, so about 19.5 years ago. They were mild and I know how lucky that was. I hope you get relief to stay ahead of the pain and discomfort.

I'm so sorry. I hope it turns out to be a mild case that doesn't affect your sight.

I had shingles on the left side of my face too. My dr. was quite concerned about them going into my eye but thankfully they didn't. It took several rounds of anti-viral meds. My late husband had them on the right side of his back and his were extremely painful.

So sorry to hear this--my husband had the exact same thing over 13 years ago. His started with a horrible headache. He went to Urgent Care after a day or two of the headaches and was given something (a shot maybe?) and told to go to the ER if the pain came back. It did so we headed to the ER in the middle of the night where he had a scan done that thankfully didn't show anything like a tumor or an aneurysm, but also didn't provide any reason for the pain. He still had a headache, and his eye was super watery (causing a sore on his nose from his glasses) so we went back to Urgent care a day later. The same doctor happened to be there and realized right away that it was Shingles because of the sore on his nose which was getting bigger. He finally got put on the anti-virals and had to go see an ophthalmologist, but it was a rough few days before he started feeling better. He even ended up back in the ER because he became dehydrated not eating or drinking much because he was so miserable.
The sores on his nose and forehead were awful and ugly but healed up nicely (just a little redness for a little while).
The downside of it all is that he continues to see the ophthalmologist to this day. He was started on strong eye drops and slowly was able to taper down to once a week for a while. Whatever the issue was, what the doctor was seeing in his eye, slowly went away as he started decreasing the drops according to a schedule. However, at a checkup after several months of not using drops because he looked clear, the issue came back, and he had to start up the drops. The ophthalmologist had him try several times to taper off the drops, but the issue never went and stayed away. DH finally said I'll keep using them and get checked a couple of times a year. He kept trying because he wanted to go back to wearing contacts but is resigned to wearing glasses for the rest of his life--the ophthalmologist is equally frustrated. Thankfully whatever is going on in his eye doesn't bother him physically (sight or pain) but I'm guessing if he didn't continue with the drops it would be an issue.

Ugh! I hope the meds kick in.
I had chickenpox really bad when I was a kid and as soon as I turned 50 I got the vaccine. I go next month for the 2nd shot. I hope to avoid shingles as it sounds horrible.

Damn, I'm so sorry to hear you are suffering. My niece got it on her eye and elsewhere when she was 22. She does not have eye damage. Due to her age it was pretty bad before they diagnosed her.
Wish wishing you a speedy recovery.

I have not had the shingles, but I was getting viral labyrinthitis which the doctor suspected was related to the same virus. I have not had any signs of it since getting the vaccine.

I cant believe Urgent Care couldnt diagnose Shingles!
Glad you are seeing the eye dr today, shingles near your eye is no joke! Take the antivirals religiously abd ibuprofen for pain. Dh had it about 15 years ago on the back of his head and said it was very painful even with the meds

No advice, but ouch! Hopefully it won't be too bad!
Your good deed for today though is reminding me that my doctor told me just last week that I should go to the pharmacy and get the shingles vaccine. Going to do that as soon as I can.

I got the first on a Friday thinking I’d be “sick” but nothing. I got home 3 hours after getting it and took a Tylenol just to be safe. I’ve heard the 2nd is worse. Thankfully I’m on summer break so if I feel like ass, no big deal.

Hopefully your second will go smoothly.

Good luck with them. Hope you have mild symptoms. I was lucky and had a very mild case. I took the antivirals and didn’t really have the usual pain or itching. The worst for me was the nursing home would not let me in to be with my husband even though my dr said there was no danger in him getting them unless he actually touched them. The director of nursing had to come outside and look under my shirt before I was allowed back in. I believe I was kept out 2 weeks or so. I have since had both immunizations and didn’t have any issues with either of them.

My DD had shingles when she was just in her late 20's. She called me to show me a couple rash like sores on her shoulder. Luckily I was with my dear friend who is a Physician's Assistant. She told her to get to the ER immediately. The ER gave her meds and she did not get another single sore.
Hopefully since you caught it very early the meds will stop it in it's tracks. I have heard how painful it is and my heart goes out to you. Wishing you the very best outcome.

So glad you are seeing an ophthalmologist. That is the most dangerous place to have shingles around the eyes. I had a very mild case when I was only in my 30's. I had it for days thinking it was poison ivy before it finally started hurting.
Hope you feel better soon.

((( cmpeter. ))) sending healing hugs to you. I had a mild case on my left side. They itched like crazy and after a few days, started to hurt like crazy. I went to Care Now and received the medication. It got better rather quickly. This was before I had gotten the vaccine. Best of luck to you.
Anyone who is eligible to receive the 2 part vaccine should really consider getting it asap.

Thank you all! Those of you who’ve had a mild case are giving me hope. The ophthalmologist did find a small spot in my eye…yay. She prescribed antibiotic drops and an ointment for that.
Dh has had the shingle vaccine. The first shot made him feel pretty lousy, he napped most of the day. He didn’t have any negative reaction to the second shot. I’ll be getting mine just as soon as I can. I would have had my first shot already if I wasn’t such a procrastinator.
