On the road to OK to see my mom. We probably won’t do anything the evening of the 4th since I’ll be tired from driving all day. But the following day we are going to Pioneer Woman’s town and have lunch, shop and we got an Airbnb and a cute little house we stayed at before. Mom only lives about an 1 1/2 away but since she is 84 this is a good way to have a lil vacation and have fun.

I haven't heard the official plans yet but we usually end up at my sisters and spend time in the pool and BBQ. Our town's fireworks were last night and it was super hot and crowded which are two of my least favorite things so I just hung out at my sisters (sense a theme here?)

We live on Lake Huron and host a very large party from July 3-7, topping off at 32 people in the 4th, of which 29 will be sleeping here. On the 4th we always have ribs and cheesy potatoes for dinner. The day will be spent at the lake, playing games, floating, boating, talking, and drinking.

We debated going to our place in Port A but decided against it as it will be crazy crowded. We would rather go down in a few weeks. The summer crowds are bad enough. So we'll stay home and spend the day in the pool and throw something on the grill. Our town has fireworks over the lake but I doubt we will go. It's always crowded and super hot. The older we get, we would rather just stay home in the ac. Ohhh interesting that you have a place in Port A. We have been tossing up the idea of buying a property there. Right before Covid, we were looking at Possum Kingdom, but then decided it wasn't right. DH loves Port A and thinks it would be nice to be able to have a 2nd home there. We've tossed up the idea of renting it out when we aren't there but Im not sure thats a mess I want to deal with.

No solid plans yet. I don't know if I'm on shift yet, nor about the other adults in our household.
We don't usually do the 4th big.

I had to put my older dog to sleep yesterday so I don't feel like doing anything. My younger dog was very bonded to Shadow and I can tell she is looking for him. I plan to give Hope lots of attention. It's going to be hot, humid and too crowded to see the fireworks anyway.

It’s ridiculously hot here, so of course DH’s company is hosting an outdoor event that I will have to go to. Yay.

Swimming at an Aunt's house on the 4th. Everyone is bringing something. We are bringing pasta salad, beans with brisket, and raspberry lemonade cake. The rest of the weekend is working on bathroom remodel...or nothing!

Some friends of ours are up in Michigan this week visiting from Tennessee. I'd like to see them. I am afraid we are going to be invited (to see them) to a BBQ at another of Jeremy's high school friend's house who is a complete jackass. (I'm not usually riled up by many people, so you can only imagine how big a jackass he is to turn me off so badly I don't even want to BBQ with him.) I want to see the Tennessee friends and I am hoping they can make time for us outside of the jackass. If they can't, I'm not sure what I'll do. I don't want to send Jeremy alone because I don't want to offend the Tennessee friends, but I also really, really don't want to go either.

We are having some friends and family over for a BBQ/pool party. I have to work the next day so it won't be anything too late. Not sure on the menu yet besides hamburgers and hot dogs. I will probably make a pasta or taco salad too. It looks like it will be a good day for the pool at around 85-90. Hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th!

It is a poke cake and absolutely delicious. This is the recipe I use: www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/raspberry-lemonade-cake/a9ce109b-c84e-4d70-9d4f-05922f316085The only changes I make are using the whole tub of Cool Whip instead of the 1 cup and I add raspberry extract to the frosting.

We are staying in a hotel downtown to get away from our neighborhood fireworks. Going out to eat somewhere and watch big fireworks from a park downtown.

We've tossed up the idea of renting it out when we aren't there but Im not sure thats a mess I want to deal with. Ours is an RV lot in an RV resort on the beach. We keep a 5th wheel down there year round so we can just hop in the car and go down whenever we feel like it. Most owners do rent out their sites but we have never been in the rental pool. I think it's relatively easy to rent out because it's all managed by the resort. We just never wanted to deal with pulling the RV out and having to take it whenever we wanted to go. Plus you have to fill out your availability calendar a year or so in advance. Definitely wouldn't be a spontaneous getaway anymore for us. That being said, DH is planning on retiring in the next year and it's time for that puppy to start paying for itself. We're debating getting rid of the 5th wheel and getting a motor home instead, not keeping it down there (VERY rough on an RV to sit in that environment for an extended period of time) and putting our lot into the rental pool. We bought it in 2010 and got a very good deal on it. The prices down there now are just crazy. And our taxes are ridiculous. Almost as much for this RV lot as our house here in Central Texas. On the other hand, we bought it when I had just finished cancer treatment and we honestly didn't know if I was going to live much longer or not. Scary times and we decided to make the best of it. As it turns out, I'm still alive 15 years later (had cancer in 2009) and it's been one of the best things we've ever done. We've had a lot of fun down there!

Awwww You know it's funny, it's really a place that if you go a few times it's good enough (although her food in the restaurant is SO good).. but to drive a long ways to go multiple times, there isn't much to do. So it is now a good stomping grounds for my mom. She doesn't like to get out much anymore (over the road) so this is close enough to drive to and even though it is only 1 1/2 hour away, she likes that is kinda like a little getaway and it isn't overwhelming. Very low key. Even if it is busy. Thanks for thinking of me!!

Not to be a debbie downer, but I think for the 2nd year in a row, I am not going to celebrate, after another round of SCOTUS decisions. I feel like Rome is burning...
I didn't turn my computer on this weekend, I just needed to not see commentary after the debate. I am off for 4 days, so I am hoping another detox will help my frame of mind...

Sorry Texas, no offense - but these are not real lakes. I miss Michigan.
