Curious to know how many people drink their tap water straight from the tap without filtering it. The question came up this morning because we were woken up in the middle of the night by one of those loud emergency alerts from our phones, saying that we are under a boil water advisory. Apparently some sort of algae was found in the DC water treatment plant which also serves my area. The discussion on our town's FB group has been interesting. Some people say they NEVER (emphasis theirs) drink the tap water anyway so it's no problem for them. Others say they filter it (Britta or other filter like that) because it tastes awful (and filtering won't do anything for this boil alert). Others drink it straight out of the tap. My house has always been in that last group. We've never filtered it and we don't think it tastes awful. But there are enough people in the group who apparently never let tap water cross their lips, so I was curious about the Peas. Also, the other funny thing is the people who seem to think boiling is something they will never do. One guy posted right under the story with the headline "BOIL WATER ALERT" to say "anyone know how long this will last? My bottled water supply is probably only good for another day or so." um... Just boil the tap water. -- Maybe he has a large family so yeah, that would be more difficult. He should start now. haha The time to stock up on bottle water is when there's no water at all, like with the big water main break we had not too long ago. oy Happy 4th of July, record-breaking heat, crowds out in the heat, and bottled water in short supply. I hope the hotels can get water for all the tourists who are in town.

Yes I do, no worries in my part of England at all thankfully.

You can safely drink our water but most people don't. It tastes terrible. We buy gallons of spring water.

I happily drink tap water here, no filters, no pre-boiling. It's fresh, clean, cold, just as it should be. In fact, it's my drink of choice but I know it can taste differently in other parts of the country. Our water board is very good in warning us that there may be a disruption to supply or if there may be some other problem. They are to be working on the pipes in about 10 days time so we are already aware of that.

We drink our tap water. I have looked at the water quality reports here and it’s fine. It comes from a large local lake and is treated at water purification centers.
I lived before in an area served by a giant underground aquifer in SC. That water was really good - as good or better than most bottled water.

I don’t but use it for cooking without hesitation. I buy gallons of spring water for drinking. I honestly have never tried our water except for maybe to take a pill now and then. It may well be just fine. I do use it for ice via my fridge ice maker and often it melts in my beverage and I continue to drink it. Perhaps I should give it a try for regular drinking.

Yes we drink the tap water. We have very good water here.
We did have a boil water alert last year - a huge storm caused a power outage, so the back up systems failed, which then caused untreated water to flow into the pipes across many suburbs. Yuk.

Where I live in England the tap water is safe to drink, fresh and cold with no nasty taste, although we also were in a boil alert area not so long ago. Water leaks in the roads are pretty common though, and when those are fixed the water can have a funny colour and taste until it's been flushed through. We usually get messages to run the water until it runs clear, but sometimes I've flushed the toilet and have been very startled by the colour!
We do have a water filter attached to our kitchen tap as well, used mainly for the kettle (to prevent limescale) and to water the plants.
We know how lucky we are to live here with such good and plentiful water. We still conserve as much as we can though, and use the water butts (rain-water barrels) to water the garden.

Munich tap water is safe to drink, but it is very high in calcium which, to my mind, makes it taste chalky. Because of the high calcium levels, it is also not recommended to use water straight from the tap for kettles, coffee machines or ironing, as they gunk up really quickly. Because of his, we have a Brita filter and all water we rink or use for coffee or tea is filtered first. DH prefers child water, so he fills bottles from the filter jug and refrigerates them. I drink it straight from the jug as I prefer room temperature. When we are home in Australia, I get the same lovely water as AussieMeg, so then I'll drink it straight from the tap.

We have a well, but we have two filters - one coming into the house and one through the refrigerator.

No, we've had massive problems with our water supply, we use bottled mostly. This is what came out of our tap the other day, it's absolutely vile and despite a lot of hot air being talked about the issue it's not getting solved.

Omg, that is really bad! I wouldn't even drink that after boiling, not unless I was totally desperate.

It is safe to drink but I don’t like the taste so I don’t drink straight from the tap very often. I do use it to cook without any filtering.

Oh lainey - that is awful! My well sits 50 yards from my house and I don't have any issues with drinking it straight from the tap. We do have iron bacteria in our water - and I wonder if that is what is going on with your water lainey? I know the small town in my area has that same issue. Not the whole town, but part of the town deals with this rusty water. Our shop that is about a mile from our house has really rusty water. Mine, in a sink would look clear, but if you leave it set, the rustyness shows up in the sink. My toilets get rust marks and my sink will where the water tap runs the most. It is pretty easy to clean up and if I keep my watersoftener salt supplied, it is much less of an issue. I use the Iron remover type softener salt. I have a tap water faucet that bypasses the softener though. I do run that through a Britta for my coffee maker, but I find myself just filling it straight from the tap most of the time. I do regularly run cleaner through my coffee maker and my nugget ice maker. Vinegar just doens't do it, I use either the Keruig cleaner or the CLR Coffee pot cleaner.

We do have very old cast iron pipes, the problem was made worse after some kind of 'flushing' procedure. The council promises that all the pipes are being replaced but this issue has been going on for years to some extent. It's supposedly safe to drink once it runs clear but we don't risk it.

I do drink from the tap, and refill waterbottles daily with tapwater.
I would not drink it if it tasted bad. Then I would probably have invested in a filter.

Outside of the huge water main break that we recently experienced and the water restrictions and some area boil water advisories, Calgary has excellent drinking water and I don't hesitate to drink tap water.
The restaurants all serve it ...

My parents live right near an aquifer where a major bottling company gets their spring water. Trucks rotate through there all day long.
From what I understand, they pay a ridiculously low permit fee (like $200) and take millions of gallons each year. Groundwater isn't owned by anyone and falls under a "reasonable use" doctrine. The profit margin is absolutely ridiculous.

We're on a well here and our previous house was also - and our well water is great. The house before that was city water but the city was on wells - also good drinking water.
Before that? when we lived in apartments? we drank the city water. There was nothing wrong with it but the well water is better, imo. And we certainly drink city water if we go out to eat.
Many years ago when I lived in Massachusetts? I did have to buy bottled water. I had a baby and his doctor said NOT to use the city water for formula or cooking because the city still had lead pipes in our area and the lead leached into the water. We already lived in a house with lead paint so we were very cautious and his lead levels were checked regularly. But that's the only place where I bought bottled water.
I'm a big water drinker -always have been - and there are places here in Florida where the tap water (even from a well) tastes awful due to sulpher levels - it's fine from a health perspective though.

We have well water, which tastes like butt to me, even after filtering it through one of those pitchers. I think I'm spoiled by the water that I drank growing up in Arkansas, which was really good. I typically just drink seltzer if I'm thirsty.

My sister and nephew and many others got ill from our city water years ago.
Bottled all the way.

Yes we drink our tap water. I don’t remember ever having a boil water advisory or any issues at all, and the taste is good.

Yes, I will drink our town’s tap water. But we have a well which we drilled years ago due to the high price of city water. It is much higher for us since we are not in city limits but have city water. We also have cattle and watering them w/city water would be way too expensive.
Our well water tastes fine, and we do filter it, but I don’t care for the scale/mineral build-up that we get even with a filter.
