I always hear that people move from California to other states for more "freedom". I've seen memes of people from California arriving in Florida with the caption "Hello Freedom." What exactly are they looking for? Is a cheaper home considered "freedom"?
I've always lived in So.Cal., so I am probably "blind" to some of things people in other states say are bad in California. I can buy a *gasp* gun in California if I want to. We don't restrict women's rights to abortions, most of us don't try to ban books, etc. I can see maybe if you are a business owners, California does have a lot of regulations regarding safety, worker's rights, and environmental issues. But is that the "freedom" people complain about? Not everyone moving out of California is a business owner. And yes, the Covid shutdowns were a big issue, but that is past now.
This is a serious question. It is not something I want to discuss with my friends. Like I said, I may just be "blind" to it all because So. Cal. has always been my home and I've never lived anywhere else. And yes, I marked this "political". LOL!

Dude. I am going to tell you this conversation I overheard between DH & a co-worker (he works from home and uses his laptop for all his calls). For reference, the guy he was speaking to lives in PA.
"I was in California a few years ago and, man, they have all these WARNINGS on things like the glass before you enter a restaurant or store. All these things about IT CAN CAUSE CANCER and other stuff, it's just crazy!"
I even asked DH to clarify after and he said "no, that was the entirety of his rant and when I don't respond to him, he either stops speaking or he'll move on."
We live in Kansas City and at the local farmer's market, the farmer will say something like "oh, this is local, we don't have any of that weird stuff like in California."
I was getting a tattoo on Saturday in Springfield, MO, and the artist's mom came in and sat for a while. She started going on about how "well, around here we don't let people shoplift, but you know... they ALLOW that type of stuff in places like California." After her Mom left, the artist was telling me her Mom has some weird ideas. I said "Yeah, that California thing was weird." She said "What's bad is that she's actually FROM California."
I really feel like people either have no idea or they're so brainwashed at this point by watching Faux News? It really boggles the mind because the times I've been to Cali, I thought it was beautiful.

People were like tell me you never lived in Ca without telling me. Others I have seen are women running alone. I go for walks all the time and never feel afraid. I have also seen comments about school. We can homeschool here. Taxes. Okay, but your public ed services suck. Honestly, the reasons are always so trivial. I have the beach, mountains, desert, museums, bodily autonomy, great health care, I can breathe thanks to regulations, workers are taken care of, my disabled kids have services galore and my son will be taken care of when I am gone, students receive free meals at school, they are taught actual science and history, my teacher dh makes a decent livable wage, there are laws being passed to protect students and LGBTQ+ persons... When I look at other comparable areas in other states, the cost of living is the same or higher because dh wouldn't make nearly enough in a lot of states. I would rather live in "commie-fornia" than elsewhere.

California does have regulations. Next time you buy something, maybe other then food, look at the back and see the comments about California regulations. So in essence we all live by California regulations.. Car emissions are a big one..

I always wonder this as well. Born and raised in Southern California. I have never felt restricted. I’m not into guns but could buy one if I wanted to. They also claim they are moving to safer places but also say that they walked into a store and walked out with a gun within 15 minutes. If the area is so safe why do you feel you need a gun for protection?
I have been curious about this and it really makes little sense. I think there are waiting periods to purchase a gun but I think most people are for those.

So in essence we all live by California regulations.. Car emissions are a big one.. Yes, we have cancer warnings on everything. But as long as the company puts that on the product, they can still sell it. And Company's will put that on their products because California is such a huge market to sell to. The smog in LA was so bad up through the 70's. LA is a basin, and the bad air would just sits there when we had breezes from the ocean. We used to have smog alerts and we couldn't go out to play during recess. A lot of that is gone now thanks to the emission standards.

If the area is so safe why do you feel you need a gun for protection? That is another thing. There seems to be a blurred line between fear and prevention. When we wore masks, it was fear. Yet carrying a gun is prevention. Is wearing seat belts a fear or is it prevention?

(And since we couldn’t see the big fireworks show because of fog, everyone was happy to watch those illegal fireworks!) Also…guess what we can have legally? Pot. There are dispensaries everywhere… many next to a Target, or Safeway.

It’s propaganda. Part of the overall maga agenda to turn the country against California and eventually snag all those electoral votes, either by dismantling CA or convincing the rest of the country that their votes shouldn’t count.
It’s ridiculous. Yes, prop-65 is a strict regulation, maybe too strict in many cases, but other states have additional regulations too, and overall isn’t it better to protect your residents?

Another California native. Yes, we have restrictions and taxes. Sometimes I get frustrated that I can't order certain plants for my garden, for example. Some people scream about taxes and strict building codes and environmental regulations. Of course our gun control laws make a lot of hunters very angry.
So essentially what I take from the freedom statements is that people want to go live where it is cheap (allegedly, everywhere has taxes!) where they can employ someone without giving them a lunch break to construct a home without paying for permits and then dump cheap gasoline down the storm drain.
In all seriousness, this state has some big issues. But I am always thankful for the legal protections I have as a worker and a woman and that I am surrounded by clean air and clean water.

Weirdly even though Washington (where I live) has no income tax and low property taxes, I never hear Republicans talk about us as the land of freedom! The right wing in Seattle mostly complains that we aren't locking up enough homeless people, which . . . I mean, shouldn't freedom include sleeping wherever you want (and consuming drugs since, while that isn't something I am saying people who are homeless are doing or all doing, certainly the right wing in Seattle says they are all doing)?
Anyhow, I grew up in CA and the only lack of freedom I feel about it is that I love SF and would consider moving there but literally can't afford to live in the city with the number of kids I have. Yes, sure, you can't toxically pollute everywhere you want, but that's just a lack of freedom for corporations, and they are not (no matter what anyone says) people.

People are so threatened by California, it really is laughable. The only thing I will say when I hear these comments is that the only problem with California is the amount of people that live there. The traffic is miserable. And for that alone, living here has improved our quality of life. But to say that California allows shoplifting or doesn't allow residents to make their own food choices is so ridiculous. Those "may cause cancer" signs are meant to inform the consumer, something that every state should strive to do!

We hear that in Texas as well - oh, all these Californians are moving here for more "freedom."
And then they get here and find out that the middle class tax burden, all in, is actually higher in Texas than in Cali. (Rich people in Texas do have lower taxes because our tax structure is inherently regressive.) And while housing may be cheaper depending on where you came from and where you want to live now, nobody's living in the nicer parts of Austin, Houston, or Dallas for cheap.
Congrats, you can buy a gun in Texas with no background check at a gun show, and you don't need a permit to carry it around in public. But that means the rest of us have less freedom and safety because who knows when the next mass shooting will be? It's ridiculous.
ETA: on the "allows shoplifting" thing: every retail store I worked at 30 years ago had a policy that we did not confront shoplifters. The potential liability for asking minimum wage employees to confront someone who might be aggressive and/or armed was not worth the value of whatever they took. That was true in Nebraska, Colorado, and Missouri in the 80s and 90s. I'm pretty sure it's still true today. Is that what they mean by "allowing shoplifting?" If so, it happens everywhere, and it's a corporate policy, not something the state enforces.

We don't allow shoplifting. You will be fired if you confront a shoplifter. Laws changed thanks to uneducated voters AND the way the proposition was written that it isn't a felony until you hit $1000 worth of goods.
They are trying to get a new prop on November's election to drop it and allow prosecution. I hope it passes.

its the same nutty story as the "san francisco values" crap they threw around a lot when talking about nancy pelosi (who is considered somewhat conservative in her home town)..
I would always say.. what are you talking about.. the values of a church going catholic grandmother? accepts all, tries to make life better for us..
but details don't matter when it comes to dissing california and anyone here. we are larger than many countries... 5th or 6th largest economy in the world by ourselves.. and though tech bros thought they could go elsewhere during pandemic.. those tech companies are coming back and investing.

I'm sitting at the beach with the rest of the So Cal peas wondering the same thing.
I saw a post that said something like:
Other states are always talking about "crazy Californians". You know what Californians say about other states? Nothing, we don't think about them at all.
Of course that's tongue in cheek, but I think the reason most people leave is affordability. I hope my kids can afford to settle down here.

You couldn’t pay me to move out of California. I was born here (as were the three generations before me), I’ve lived here all my life, and I can’t think of a better place to live.
It’s not perfect, but it checks off all my boxes. I love the diversity and acceptance of all kinds of people. I don’t have to worry about our school libraries making stupid book banning choices (when a few weirdos try that crap here, they get their asses kicked at the ballot box). Everyone has access to health insurance, if not via their jobs, then either through Obamacare or provided by the state. I’m middle class and I’ve owned my own home since 1980. My middle class adult kids also both own homes.
I’m delighted to see the haters move to Idaho, Texas, and Florida. I do feel bad for the ones who get there, discover they hate it, and can’t afford to move back. But they sure weren’t paying attention.

I live in Florida - i think the 'freedoms' that people are moving to places like Florida for are the sort that give rights to gun-toting, vaccine avoiding, book banning, healthcare denying mostly white, male, 'Christian' identifying (but not what I personally would call Christ-like) MAGA supporters. They are looking to be allowed to do whatever they want while preventing everyone from doing anything they don't like

I honestly think it's a lovely place but the earth itself doesn't want you there. Wildfires, smoke, smog, droughts, earthquakes, tsunamis, mudslides, avalanches, running out of ground water... Mountain lions running through the hood because they have no place to live anymore...What else can the earth do to let you know that part is full?
As for the comment about CA not thinking about the rest of us at all, well, that's pretty typical and part of what makes you annoying. Then again, I admit to using that exact answer when a Scottish man told us every Canadian he ever met said they hate Americans, so he wanted to know if we felt the same. I said "We don't think about them at all." Which isn't true when I'm cursing their Arctic winds in January in Iowa.
🤣🤣
Just kidding, I was married in Lake Tahoe CA and my grandma's family was all from Canada. I'll see myself out. 😁

I learned this spring from my friends who live in CA, that it is not legal to jump off a cliff taller than 5 feet at a lake. I’m not sure the ins/outs of the law but we were specifically talking about cliff jumping at lakes which is common where I’m at. Families do it…into very deep water at specific places where it’s known to be safe. I was surprised that CA had such strict rules because some boats would be that tall of a jump off the bow.

There is no state wide law about cliff jumping. There may be laws at specific cliffs, but nothing state wide. In San Diego, at Sunset Cliff, it is illegal to jump into the ocean from any point higher than 5', and the cliff most people jump from is actually 20' high. The cliffs are unstable and rocky. One person died after jumping and hitting his head on the rocks. There are deaths there every year, but not all from cliff jumping. Many are from people falling/slipping over the edge. I don't know about the lake your friend is talking about, but there may be a law there too. There are laws about jumping off of cliffs in other states too.

Tonight my 12 yo found out she can’t get her helix pierced until she’s 14. That’s a freedom she doesn’t have in CA. (Oh to be 12 and have that be my big issue). She’s looking at nearby states we can vacation to that will do it for her 😂
I have friends who moved to Wisconsin. They said that food tastes better (?) and everything is cheaper. They can have the “fun” fireworks and they apparently can get them all year.
My friends who moved to Idaho did it for purely political reasons- they are hard core Trump humpers.
A friend who moved to Pennsylvania did so because of how CA “handled Covid” apparently.

On the taxes note, I just think people don’t do the research & do the math on what is different from here in NJ to where they are moving to. They look at the lower property taxes and move then whine to me about all of the various school fees & garbage collection fees etc. If your going to move south from Jersey wait til your kids are out of school at least. The school fees that don’t exist here add up to quite a bit there ( or so I hear )
