I know I'm probably going to be the odd one on here.
I usually, but not always, start with the paper line.
I'll have an envelope of photos I want to scrap, but I pick out a paper line or kit that is new or I haven't used in awhile, and go through the envelope trying to find which photo is the best match for the paper. For example, I'm beach obsessed right now, so I pick out a beach line and go through all of my beach photos to find ones that match the colors of the bathing suits, sky, water, etc. Sometimes nothing in the envelope works so I have to find beach photos from when the kids were younger. I'd say 75% of my layouts come come about this way.
The other 25% are photo first.
I don't scrap chronologically, so it is pretty easy to scrap this way. I never feel the need to scrap all of my photos, just the ones that stick out to me in the moment.
What is your process? Do you pick paper first or photos?

1) Photographs
2) Stickers, die cuts, embellishments, titles, frames.
3) Paper
4) After seeing what I have....look at ACOT and scrapbook.com, then visit Hobby Lobby....to see if there's anything else I want.
The time frame from >> pre-assembly collecting of products to potentially use.......to actual assembly of a layout......ebbs and flows, based on my layouts ideas (swirling around in my mind), my time, and other things I do (commitments and household and life responsibilities).

Photos first.
However, what I tend to do is have about 2-3 months worth of photos printed at once. (Unless there's a photo heavy event, then I typically have that printed on its own.)
Then I cut the photos (because the majority of mine I have printed as 2 different 3x4s on one 4x6 print) and decide which pages I'm using for them (pocket pages in a 6x8 album).
Then I start looking for papers based on primarily the colors in the photos, with the theme being secondary if I even bother with the theme at all.
BUT, if I do have a new set of 3 months of pics printed and I haven't chosen papers for them yet, then sometimes if I have something I'm excited to use I will take that out first and see if it works with any of the new things I just printed. So in that way, I might let the product lead the way.

I often scrap more than one LO with one set of photos, and often order collections, or pick up papers with these photos in mind. So when I step into my craftroom to put something together, my process is not always the same.
Often I start with the theme of the photos and look for supplies that fit that theme.
*Sifting through the available themed collections, I select the papers & embellishments that best fit the photos. I don't THINK of this as matching colours, but I guess I do, b/c I will notice later how closely things go together...
*Then I go through my drawer of cs to find solids that match the photos OR the papers etc I have chosen. I may use that for background, photo mats, or shapes I diecut.
*Once I have created a huge mess on my scrap counter, I am ready to start assembling.
But other times I start with...
*a sketch I want to play with, or maybe a LO I want to lift , and go looking for a story that will work with it
*a technique. Maybe I want to play with inks, or other wet media; stamps or stencils; layering techniques I have seen here or somewhere else on line.
*a collection that is crying out, "USE ME!".

I start with printing photos...then I look at them and study what paper I want......then embellies and such. Sometimes the paper speaks to me when I purchase it and I then work with the pictures.....

Neither. My scrapbooking is story-driven. After selecting photos/memorabilia that support the story that I want to tell, I write the journaling & brainstorm a title. The photos/memorabilia/journaling/title influence my paper/embellishment selections & layout design.

I am pretty much always a photo 1st scrapper... I choose the pics... find a sketch, unless i decide to wing it...
I am a color sorter kinda person... not collection or manufacturer.. so i find the color way im going for... pull out papers and maybe card stock.. maybe not...
put it all down and decide what kind of embellishments or washi or wood or ink or whatever i want to add...
I usually have a title in my head and find the letters or cut out the title..
This is pretty much my scrap routine..

I don’t do traditional layouts anymore, but for my project life pages I always start with “paper” first. Paper is either actual pp I’ll use for cards, embellishments, all the fun stuff I want to use and I lay it out in pockets how I think I’ll want it. Then I live the week and then based on the pics I want to use I adjust my “paper” - using less/more supplies, shifting it around. I don’t care about paper “matching” photos- I just wanna use what I want! Lol

Photos, paper, embellishments is my usual process.
Every once in a while I’ll find paper or an embellishment that reminds me of a picture I want to scrap, but that’s rare. I usually start with the pictures.

I think I am about 50/50. I am not really a themed scrapper unless it is a holiday (Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July) and I am not really into matching the paper to the colors in the photos.
Sometimes the photos come first because I want them to help me tell the story and I need a certain amount in a certain way of I am doing a 9x12 single pocket page.
Other times, the paper sparks the story and I grab what I want to use, have a general layout in my head and then print the photo or photos needed.
I have gone through my Iris containers and looked at paper to spark creativity because sometimes a piece speaks to me and I am like oh I need to use you!
So yeah. Interesting question!

I very rarely start with the paper. The only time I would do that is if I bought some new papers that I absolutely loved, and wanted to use straight away.
My usual process is:
1. photos
2. sketch or inspiration layout
2. kit (papers and elements)
For Sketchy Saturdays or Sketchtember sketches, my process is:
1. sketch
2. photos
3. kit (papers and elements)
I pretty much only buy full kits or collections, that have both papers and co-ordinating elements, which is why I grouped those two together.

Photos first. Always. They are the primary reason that I scrapbook. Then come all the cool papers (the most fun part for me), and then all the embellishments. Sometimes I use a sketch, and sometimes I don't. I save the journaling for last, but I always make sure to leave some room on my layout.

I love hearing about everyone's process. It is interesting how differently we all do this hobby. I'm thinking about trying a few of other people's methods and see how that works. I like what I do but it would be fun to shake it up every once in awhile. |

I start with a photo and my very favorite part is taking a stack of different paper and basically color swatching, to see what each piece of paper does to the photo(s). What color gets enhanced, or the feeling. I’ve realized that I must use pink paper to scrapbook our male tuxedo cat because his little pink nose is highlighted.
Once I have that, I’ll go into my embellishments, which are loosely sorted into colors.
And I, too, love what someone said about when your desk is a mess, you’re ready to start. So true!

I definitely select my photos first. But, I had some flamingo paper and embellishments I just loved, so I bought flamingo floaties to give my grandchildren! I had fun taking photos at the lake with the kids.

So I usually just scrapbook trips we take, but I want to get into doing a yearly scrapbook (sort of Project Life-ish). I always tell myself I will wait until we take the trip, then go based on photos for the overall theme of the book (ex., when we did a few day trips to Philadelphia last year, I used the Doodlebug Design Land That I Love Collection).
Howeverrrr... I do already have some paper for future trips we want to take because I knew I would still love it (ex., we want to go to New England next year for our anniversary, so I picked up stuff from American Crafts' Farmstead Harvest collection; I want to use the now unavailable Honey Bee Stamps' The Bees Knees paper with some solid cardstock I collected from Tuesday Morning for a 2-week road trip sometime in the future; and then I also recently fell in love with Simple Stories' Acorn Lane Collection which I'll use for a trip we are planning to the Poconos).
DH wants to know when I'm using all of my paper, and I told him that some of it's for trips we're planning on taking. And maybe I'll start that yearly scrapbook in a non-traditional month to cut down on (some) paper.

artbabe, melanell Fortunately, the papers I have already bought could definitely be used for other projects, I just think they'd be really cool for the places we want to see. One of the patterns in the Honey Bee Stamps paper sort of reminds me of the Sun Sphere (Wig Sphere, if you're a Simpsons fan) in Knoxville, which is on our road trip list. I just know that trip isn't something we can decide to do on a whim because it'll probably be around 2 weeks in length, and we've never done a trip longer than a week (yet).

I would love to be a papers first girl, but 95% of the time I decide the photos or story I want to scrap, and go in search of a design (e.g. a sketch or Pinterest layout) and then papers.
Occasionally I may start with a sketch or a layout I want to scraplift and find photos and papers that work. That's my design/planning phase.
In my creation phase, I assemble the papers and photos, create a title, add journaling, and then embellishments. Sometimes the title, journaling and embellishments are selected (or drafted) during design, but frequently, not until after I've already begun assembly.

It varies for me. If I’m excited about or motivated to scrap specific photos I look to them for a suitable color palette before choosing product to match. If the paper inspires me it’s the opposite. For instance, my last purchase was a Just Beachy kit by Simple Stories and I made a list of suitable photos that would go with a beach theme so I can print them.

I almost always start with the photos. I may have a collection in mind to use, but I won’t decide on the papers/products until I have the pics in hand.
My process would be:
*Sketch/scraplift (these first two can be interchanged)
*Photos
*Papers
*embellishments (usually starting with large diecuts, and going smaller for layering.)

Picture first. I rarely use themed paper so I’m always going through my stash to find paper I want to use. Occasionally I amazing can’t find what I want in my mega paper stash. Then I have to run by Hobby Lobby—no LSS near me.

If the sketch or challenge is to use a certain pattern paper or certain embellishment, I may pick that first and see if I have any pictures to go with it. |

I have so many older collections that I have been pulling out the collections and finding photos that work with those collections so I can be done with that collection.
I have a spreadsheet that I use and that is helpful to keep thing organized. I am able to keep track of the photos I have printed and the sketches and collections that I have paired with the photos.
