Hi! I've been reading but not commenting as much lately. Every quarter my work life ramps up to a crescendo that is basically a 90-minute meeting, and then settles back down. I am currently climbing the ramp and this will be intensifying for the next 2 weeks or so. Usually all I can manage at this point is to dip my toes in non-work stuff, but I'm determined to try to break that cycle. So I'd like to share a little about what has really struck a chord with me lately, reading here. It probably always strikes a chord if I'm honest, but I've been thinking about it more in the last month or so. Here it is: If you do something other than 12x12 layouts using fairly traditional materials (an example is Echo Park kits but there's nothing wrong with Echo Park kits at all), I just want to encourage you to keep sharing your interest here. For example: Do you work with digital products and scrapbook digitally? That's so exotic to me. It may be that it is more mainstream now, probably is, but for me that is slightly off the mainstream center. Another example, and one that I personally dabble in: Nontraditional sizes or means of documenting your photos and stories. This could be anything other than the standard 12x12, but the more "different," the better. I do a lot of stuff in travelers notebook inserts these days because many stories, to me, just don't warrant a 12x12 layout so I have left a lot of cool stories untold in the past because I have that mindset. Here's an example of what I mean about little stories that would have been untold. This is in a TN: Portland Leather Goods by Seanna., on Flickr What about "altered books" or junk journals? Anyone do those? So freaking cool. I have done one altered book and it was back in the days when circle journals were a big thing. It's one of my most prized possessions, actually. I also love looking at Project Life types of projects. I even have some of the stuff to do those but just never dove in. I think those are pretty mainstream, but I thought I would throw those in anyway. What about documenting unusual stuff? I get so much inspiration from that. People who art journal gratitude, for example. That's just so cool. I'm sure there are 100 things I'm not even thinking of right now. If you do 12x12 layouts only? I think that's great, too. I still do them on a fairly regular basis. I ultimately came to the conclusion that it's a lot of real estate that is not always necessary, and I guess I have more of an awareness that this stuff is going to have to get processed after I croak--but also, even before that, if I decide to downsize and travel a lot in the future. I don't want that to drag me down. Anyway, I wanted to share some love for off-the-beaten-path folks and their cool stuff. It's not necessarily even the actual output. It is also the way they approach this general paper crafting hobby. Some people buy only per project and keep a tiny stash. That's AWESOME and I love reading about it--so different from what I consider the mainstream. I've loved the different approaches to organization as well. Some don't even use much in the way of traditional scrapbooking products. They use found stuff, mostly ephemera, fabric, magazine pages, etc. Amazing. I love reading about that. If you've been hesitant to talk about your niche "thing" here because most people don't relate to it, I encourage you to let your niche flag fly. I'll read it for sure. I'll bet lots of people will. And if you've shared your cool way of approaching this general hobby: My eternal thanks. I've gotten a lot out of it. I'd call some of you out by name, but I don't want this to be weird.

As another example, here is a visually luscious Amy Tangerine YouTube video she posted a few days ago about how she is documenting 15-20 minutes a day in a Hobonichi Cousin, in the daily pages. This seems similar to what the awesome Linda (lasteve1) does. It's also a neat way to just use your stuff. Lots of freedom with this. I do a modified version of this but my main focus in my Hobo dailies is that each day I list three gratitudes. Sometimes that's all I get done. Sometimes I go back later and write in the empty space if I'm doing something else. Sometimes I go back and throw cool stickers/washi/ephemera, even photos in there. I recommend this practice. It's just fun. Amy Tangerine Hobo video

I think I am non-mainstream. I do 8.5 x 11. Chronological order. Theme based.
After I got past the initial "beginning layouts (Mrs Grossman stickers, cardstock die cuts, deco scissors)", I found my style.....mix and match patterns, frames, matted photos, stickers, titles, brighter colors, linear, symmetrical. My style is still the same after all these years (27 years so far). I like continuity and matching, so I would never changes scrapbook sizes.
I've never been one to jump on any bandwagon or trend. I just do what I like and what I think is cute. I don't worry about what anyone else thinks about me, how I life my life, or how I scrapbook.
I have a scrapbook-mixed media style journal. It started out as a neat and orderly scrapbook style....in 2019 I deconstructed it, and segued into a scrapbook-mixed media style. I have and still am copying....writing in my handwriting, things that were previously neatly typed up and printed out. It's been a bit over a struggle to go out of my "neat and orderly" comfort zone.....to mixed media messy style and random. I love the look of mixed media messy style, but every fiber of my being wants to "clean it up".
I am also writing a book. It is still in the compilation phase. I intend for it to be scrapbook-mixed media style.....in look and style.

I know others scrap as I do, but I think it's still not the most common way to scrap. I use pocket pages, but do not do Project Life-style scrapping. The purpose of my scrapbooking is the same as always--to put my photos into an album, in a mostly chronological order, and add a little journaling with the photos. I was always a simple scrapper even when using 8.5 x 11 and 12x 12 pages. And after doing a few 12x12 traditional albums I realized that I much preferred a smaller canvas. So I stuck with 8.5x11 for a long time. But when pocket pages came out, I realized that my canvas could shrink down so much more. I had already done a 2-Up album in a scrapped style, so I knew I could take what I was doing in my 8.5 x 11 albums, in terms of purpose, and move it to pocket pages with no issue. At first I did use 12x12 pocket pages, then found those albums to be too cumbersome and moved down to 8.5x11, and then when 6x8s came out, I decided to try those. And for day to day life they work great for me. I can always put in a full page sheet if I want to do "traditional" scrapbooking, or if I have any larger memorabilia or ephemera to include, too. Here's an example of one "layout", pre-journaling. Late Xmas 23/24 by Mel Scraps, on Flickr

I love that there is a thread to talk about non-mainstream ideas, but I would also encourage everyone here to share creations in the quarterly Sharing threads. This quarter's thread is HERE. Lots of 12x12's to be sure, but usually we have pocket pages, 8 1/2" pages, greeting cards, digi pages, and sometimes journal pages--artsy &/or scrapbooked. Have seen some TN there in the past, too. justjac does regular daily pages in a small format. AussieMeg does both "traditional" and PL scrapbooking digitally. teacherlisa documents her life in journals she often shares there.
scrapnnana was just talking about how she does "hybrid" crafting, where she prints digi images to use on paper & glue pages. There are other non traditional creations I have seen in past sharing threads, but need to go back and remind myself who shared them. I do 12x12 usually theme based pages, but try to use a variety of products and techniques along the way. I don't feel bound to use a particular line or manufacturer, often mixing my mewest stuff with papers and pretties I pull out of one of my bins or drawers.

I do also really enjoy true junky junk journals, decorated journals, and making just ordinary regular notebook style journals, too. I often make a new small journal anytime I have a new goal I want to work on for a specific amount of time. They're all simple, and mostly paper based, just like my scrapbooking style.

I am very mainstream, but stories untold would be a great little collection to leave behind to grandchild or curious kid. I know I would love a book of my mom's thoughts and ideas. I lost her when I was 23 and used to wonder all of the time about what she would have thought about this or that.
And OP now I am wondering what type of work you are in that leads up to a 90 minutes meeting. Sounds interesting.

My kids would just toss it in the trash, so why not? I can just cut out some of the pages to keep it from getting too thick. melanell I love that you just do what works for you. I like to put smaller layouts and pocket pages in with my traditional 12x12 layouts. I think the variety makes it more interesting. Also, sometimes I just want to add something small, not do a full size layout.

I found moving my travel stories to a tn size was the change I needed to make to get the stories told and albums completed.
I’m also starting to tell stories of my past using my old childhood photos in 6x8 or smaller albums as I only have a few photos in certain sizes and I can’t get my minimalist brain around maximalist layouts with only one photo on them
I also only do 3x8 for ditl and 6x8 for Christmas/dd as any larger and the albums just don’t ever get finished.
The change in layout/album size reignited my passion for scrapbooking as I was finding that the 12x12 size was just too much real estate, my pictures just aren’t good enough quality to be larger than 4x6 at the most for a majority of them, I didn’t want to journal more than a sentence or so, and I’m quite minimal so I ended up with way too much white space as I’m not really into layers.
I also find the smaller albums much easier to store, and waaayyyy more easier for people to pick up and flip through, especially those who don’t scrapbook as walking at them with an overflowing 12x12 album is quite confrontational 😂

My first 12x12 pocket album weighed a ton! And because of that I found that the album itself suffered a lot more damage because people would move it about with so much force due to its weight and sheer size.

Portland Leather Goods by Seanna., on Flickr I just gasped when I saw the Portland Leather collection, I thought it was yours! I just got my first bag and a couple of wallets, but I can see how this can become an obsession!

i've paper crafted for 30 years and have never done a 12x12 or 8x11 layout. i love all kinds of mini albums whether they are chipboard, fabric/paper, shaped, etc. i am definitely a fringe kind of papercrafter.

We do all sorts of stuff but one of my big responsibilities is a quarterly compliance steering meeting related to privacy. I've learned that my work life sort of builds up to these meetings and then the "stress tide" rolls back out for quite a while. It's been very helpful to me to understand this, helps to know that "this too shall pass." My job can be pretty nuts. Thanks for asking!

I mostly scrap 12x12, but I like to mix it up. I did a Simple Stories Sn@p album (6x8) for documenting my pregnancy week by week. I like smaller sizes in the sense that it is quicker. Now that I have a 10 month old baby, I rarely get a chance to scrap. When I do, a big 12x12 page is intimidating. Plus, with the smaller sizes, I feel more creative and free to "play" and do different things. For example, I add flip-flaps to the page or decorate directly on top of the page protector. I also add other types of things, like greeting cards, etc.

I do a little bit of everything! I rarely, if ever, do 12x12 layouts.
As mentioned above, I keep a daily journal in my hobonichi cousin and love adding in words + stickers + washi to document my thoughts + feelings + life in general. I document weekly in 9x12 project life. I keep 6x8 albums full of stories, most of them outside of the page protectors, with various sizes. I keep 9x12 stories albums + 12x12 albums for my daughter filled with a mix of layout sizes + styles (pocket pages mixed in). I create a lot of mini albums in a range of sizes for various projects like december daily, week in the life, travel albums, or other fun themes (considering starting a coffee one soon). I create altered books + mixed media. I tried a get messy subscription for a while but it was just too expensive for what you get. I've tried traveler's notebooks, journals, all sorts of different constructions for mini albums, purely digital pages, digital photo books, hybrid projects, mixed media projects combined into scrapbook layouts, magazine collages, and more.
My favorite thing about this hobby is that there are no rules and I love mixing it up and trying new things!

The fun part of this hobby for me is the different options. I never was a strict 12x12, I've done digital also in and out for years. For a few years I used the Heidi Swapp Blur books for my daily/weekly spreads. This year I tried a Happy Planner vertical and am enjoying that process too. I sort of theme the weeks, mostly by color or if I just want to use a certain embellishment, just curtail it that way. The planner also includes the monthly layouts so I either just embellish or try to add something to the days. Like for February I listed favorite love songs on each day. I used a Photoplay Folio to document a vacation. I don't do too many mini books, but that was a lot of fun to put together. When I travel I like to pick up stationery from the local area/artists (postcards, cards, art) and incorporate that into my documenting. For that folio I used various cards I picked up, then adhered photos inside the cards related to that location/site and tucked those inside the folio. It's an interactive project. I have a plan to make a mini, top flip album for Aruba and put it on some kind of popsicle stick that will be held in the slot of a piggy bank that is in the design of dutch china from aruba that I found at a second hand shop. I don't scrap holidays much and only some events for my nephew. Otherwise it's all about favorite things, travel, feelings, cats, concerts, day trips, date nights, mostly little stories. I like batching my stories/photos in order to cut down on the number of layouts. For example, I have photos of my mantle decoration in different seasons on one layout. I often use song lyrics or movie/tv/book quotes as titles or to tell a story. I stopped buying 12x12 albums and started using a large photo box for my 12x12 layouts to cut down on the real estate.

I was ALWAYS a 12x12 scrapper.. I have about 15-20 books..some smaller, some stuffed to the seams. Then I stopped for awhile. I picked up a sketch book from Target or Michaels and just having fun making little layouts, mostly no pics.. just whatever floats my boat, no rules. I love that book so much. Now I am doing themed type junk journals and having fun with that. My next book is going to be a vintage type Disney book. I bought an old set of Disney books that I am cutting apart and using the pictures.. lots of fussy cutting going on. I LOVE it. Anyways, I do my little theme ones and then go back to my sketch book and just think of something I love and go to town.

Sometimes, I can fit three years in one 12x12 album. I do like I'm still working on a smaller scale with pockets. I'm not a huge picture taker, so this works for family albums. No one is interested in looking at my albums, so I'm not concerned about the size for that reason.
