Sometimes I read on here that people cut their sticker sheets apart and sort by theme. If you do this, is it easy to scrap this way? I have a hard time doing this because the style of art is so different for each line. I was going through my old die cut packs yesterday and purged a lot. The ones I have left from old lines I did separate into themes- animals, kid stuff, etc. What I learned from this is I have an insane amount of flamingos. The hearts, stars, and other generic stuff I sorted by color. I'm not sure this is going to work for the way I scrap but I feel like I should try it. My biggest problem is remembering what I have.
Sorting by color seems to be popular, too. I do that with cardstock, but everything else seems to be sorted by type- enamel dots together, twine together, etc. I've heard of people cutting their enamel dots apart and sorting by color but I tend to like to look at the color combinations, and if you get rid of the packaging, the clear plastic is pretty easy to see through to see what I have.
I just feel like since I'm doing a scrapbook area redo I should at least consider some other options. What have you done that has made your scrapping easier or more efficient?
(Yup, still trying to keep the board moving- I need enough content to last me through my 2 cups of coffee in the morning.)

I have sorted some embellishments by colour. I have primarily done this when I only had a few things left on a sticker sheet/in a die cut pack (usually from some design team work), if I have bought stuff that is not themed or tied to a particular collection, or if I have just bought random embellishments not associated with a collection.
For me, I under-use this stuff. I think this works really well if you are a "kit builder". You can sit down and pick through things as you are building your kit to include. I often scrap with a friend or at my LSS, and even when I am scrapping at home I tend to more or less just grab a collection (or collections I have combined) and work from that, therefore, I tend not to take the time to go through my colour bins.
What I did find worked for me (and I am sure would drive other people nuts) was to keep a container of random "stuff". For me this was a big pouch of generic embellishments (washi, labels, word stickers, puffies, etc) that I always had near me or with me. I went through a lot of stuff this way and things made their way to my pages.

I do this, but only into two containers - warms/cools. That way I still get a range of colors when I'm looking through them, and often I only need to go in to one container. I use an Iris 5x7 photo storage box for each ( SB.com has something similar).

I sort stickers, embellishments, die cuts, etc... by theme.
I sometimes cut apart various sheets of whatever it is.
I have two binders (with many sizes of divided pockets) full of miscellaneous stickers and embellishments....that don't have a theme category.
My set up and way of doing things...may not be for everyone, but it works for me.

I'm in the same boat as you, artbabe - in the middle of a stash sort (Thanks to Ali Edwards' Stash class combined with working in a new space as my previous one was too far away from the family to be practical for this season of life) and I'm considered sorting some embellishments by color, primarily die-cuts, but I'm nervous to take the plunge and try. Excited to hear how others handle this!

I had my stuff sorted by style color for a while and it worked ok back when I pulled supplies from different collections, designers and companies. Now I mostly work with collections or designers and I keep that stuff together.
When I am ready to break the remaining pieces of a collection apart, items are sorted by type.

I cut sticker sheets apart when there are only a few left, the paper collection got used up or if it’s getting older and I’m not using it. I think my eyes glaze over all the elements otherwise. I roughly sort them by color and when I’m creating a page, usually use 2 accent colors. I enjoy looking through to see what will work.
I agree that the style, not just color, can vary so I can whittle my choices down pretty easily.

My embellishments, die cuts, and stickers are sorted my theme. Brads and ribbon are by color. PP by theme, card stock by color.
Scraps of paper by color, even PP.

When I buy a collection kit - I store it together (paper, sticker sheet, other embellishments) until it's "used up" - which typically means no more 8.5x11 or bigger sheets of paper left.
At that point, I disperse the remaining embellishments and yes, cut up the sticker sheets.
If they are themed - be it a flamingo, a ice cream cone, a snowman, a sheep...then they go into my themed embellishments (in 4x6 photo boxes). If they are NOT themed - stars, arrows, hearts, labels...then they go into my coloured embellishments (also in 4x6 photo boxes).
There are a few exceptions - there are a few themes where I have so much stuff that they are stored in drawers - Christmas, outdoors/camping, military, travel... - papers, scraps, and embellishments for those themes are all together. A couple more themes I keep with my collection kits in the same type of envelope - and embellishments go in there too - Lego, Winter...
enamel dots, brads, eyelets are all stored separately from the embellishment boxes - brads/eyelets by colour and the enamel dots are altogether in a section of my tool carousel (I don't have a lot)
My process for using all this stuff?
I start with photos and often a sketch. I'll pull papers and cardstock (or a collection kit and cardstock), grab any relevent theme embellishment box, and make my layout. When I start embellishing at the end - if I feel like I need extra embellishments, that's usually when I grab the colour boxes and dig through. At that point I'm usually just looking for the right size/shade rather than something specific.
(and if I end up with extras when I die cut- like when you cut a dozen hearts and only end up using 9 - they often end up in the embellishment boxes also. )

I do cut sticker sheets apart, unless they are very specifically themed- think all travel Etc. Then I sort them by color.
I love categories....a lot....it's how I think. BUT one thing I found was if I had too many categories or too many containers/organizers it made it more difficult and time consume to scrap. I felt like I had to check too many places to look for embellishments. I felt like it made the process cumbersome. I went to keeping most die cuts, stickers and the like by color other than the really, really themed sets like Disney, or Beach, or something like that, where the pieces really didn't fit with other stuff. Now, the only thing I keep separate are puffy stickers - they are too hard to cut apart, labels - have too many, and enamel dots - too bulky to keep with all the die cuts.
Completely opposite for this I've super divided down my Halloween and Christmas ephemera, die cuts, stickers into extreme subcategories and little plastic boxes. The colors are too similar to divide by color. I also kept noticing I'd be digging through a dish of EVERYTHING for a specific thing - like holly, a candy cane or bats or a skull. I found myself getting frustrated because I kept having to sort through the same pile of everything Halloween over and over. So having elements super divided seems to be working. So for Snowflakes I've got snowflake shapes, any kind of circle badges, flag/pennants, small word strips, titles, stickers, vellum, transparencies. Anytime I want/need something snow related I reach for the little box and I know everything I'm looking through is related to snow and snowflakes.
Hope this helps.

I think it depends on how you will be looking for them.
I scrap by event/theme, usually purchase collections by theme, and sort them that way. Some themes overlap, like Summer and Camping and Hiking, so if I am looking for a particular shape, I may have to look through serval sections of a drawer or tub.
I sort cs by colour, as well as some unthemed pp collections. But other collections I sort by manufacturer or designer. I will think I need some 49&Market pp, or some Vicki Boutin diecuts.

I think it depends on how you will be looking for them. It took me a while to accept this but I think I’ve finally figured it out! I sort embellishments by type—enamel dots together, stickers together, die cuts together, etc. Then I usually sort those by manufacturer or by what kit I got them from (once I’m finished with the the kit). When I scrap, I tend to think like “oh I have a Pinkfresh die that might work” or “I need to go through the enamel dots I got at Tuesday Morning for something”. I don’t typically think that “I need something blue here” or “I need something heart shaped” so I don’t sort that way. I’m more likely to think “I need alphabet stickers and I’m pretty sure I have some <whatever brand> that will work.” So I don’t sort my alphabet stickers by colors. I sort the by brand, then by size, then by color because that’s how my brain works. It took me a while to figure this out but once I did, I spent a lot less time looking for what I needed/wanted.

But I have bin of most used where I throw sticker sheets when quickly clearing the counter, and they are all in a jumble in there. Sometimes I will pay more attention and actually return a set of blue letter stickers with other blue ones, but most of the time they are just tossed in. But it is pretty quick to flip through those bin contents to find the ones I want.

Yup, me too! That's how my brain works when I'm designing. But I also have a set of 8 colour drawers. They are the small cheap stackable plastic drawers, and I gave into the idea when Shimelle had her "scrap a rainbow" class. They have been a fabulous addition. I only put OLD, ancient, forgotten and unused embellies in there, and yes, I did cut sheets apart (like old Studio calico from kits, old KI memories) Now they actually get used! And I have found that some pages really do call for "colour" rather than knowing which sticker sheet is going to give me what I need. If you have old ephemera that isn't getting used, I'd recommend giving it a try. I myself would not commit to having my entire stash colour organized, but this partial approach has really helped me use what I own!

I also start with sketches! If it's themed, it goes within that theme box. If it's fairly generic, it goes by color. I use the 5x7 photo boxes and store them on the top of my Ikea rolling cart. Previously, I did cut apart my enamel dots and sorted them by color but now I'm going back to keeping all my enamel dots together. That makes more sense to me since I keep jewels all together, sequins together, buttons together, etc...

I'm with christinec68 . I switched organizational methods when collections started having more coordinated accessories. I'm in the process of destashing and organizing right now and I've moved my non-kit emphemera to one container in my table to keep it more at hand and hopefully to use it. I don't have many stickers that are not already organized as "puffy" or "labels," so I don't cut them apart.

Consistent with my style, I use/buy few embellishments - often making my own with stamps/punches/dies on hand - so have relatively few to organize. I do not separate embellishments by theme, color, or collection; rather, I primarily organize supplies by type & secondarily by manufacturer. Embellishments are housed in clear vanity organizers (i.e. ephemera, punched-out chipboard pieces), fridge bins (e.g. enamel dots), magazine-style paper holders (e.g. sticker sheets), etc. Color coding makes it easy to find all supplies (paper, embellishments, tools) in my inventory for each frequently-used manufacturer. HTH & you find an organizational system that works for you.

It never occurred to me before, but color sorting makes more sense if you scrapbook with kits. I tend to scrap a lot by collections, except for the NJFB kits. I love those kits, so I should probably make my own. If nothing else, when I scrapbook with a single line I'm going to get out a couple of my color sorted boxes (I keep stuff in 4x6 photo boxes) that match that line, and keep them on my desk when I scrap. I think I will be more likely to use up my old stuff this way. I'm really guilty of using only a single line's stuff but I have so much old stash I need to use up. I've been better about that lately, but I still have such a huge stash that should be on pages. Thank you for mentioning that color sorting works better for kits. It made me really think about my process and how to incorporate more of my more generic stash. Ha ha. My SYSTEM for letter stickers is by colour. Again, grammadee, you and I have things in common when we scrap. Yup, the alphabets I just used get tossed in a box randomly and I tend to dig out of that box first before I visit my admittedly huge alphabet collection carefully sorted by color and size. Nothing like a little chaos when I scrap.

This is me as well. Over the last couple of years I have been trying really hard to work in some of my older less exciting staff with the newer collections. Even if it's just a sheet or two. I bought fewer embellishments back then, and I like my clusters, so the only way it gets used is if I mix old and new.

I sort my cut apart stickers and random embellishments (after I have used most of them with the collection) by theme. I have an Iris case for random items. I put those in Ziploc bags and write on them with a Sharpie. It's paid off several times recently. My grandson received a guitar for his birthday. I was able to pull out the bag of music embellishments that came from all sorts of other themes and pull out a matching guitar - WIN! I also have a bag of book/library/bookstore elements I just used in my favorite things album.

I cut up sticker books and 12x12 sticker sheets... some of those need a small tender touch because they are so close... i also pop out chip board...
I sort all by color... i have that 10 drawer rolly tower thing that has the color drawers... yall have seen it...
I have them in 5x6 photo boxes... i actually have them semi glued onto cut up notebook paper.. so they arent just willy nilly... i like to flip thru them but its easier if they are sorta organized...
I have a pencil box for each color that has big lumpy embellishments.. buttons flair ribbon ready tied into bows flowers fans tassels... you know stuff with dimension.. also enamel dots in ziplocs in this box..
A different box has stickles nuvo stella markers pens
I also have a ziploc that has scraps and pocket cards in that drawer..
Then a file folder that has flat letters (like off sticker pages or books or those mini market letters)
I think by color... so i sort by color

I do a mix of sorting by type or theme and sorting by colour. Things like Christmas and travel are all stored together. I use either 4x6 photo cases or the zippered pouches that came with old SC kits where I keep themes I only have a small amount of like books or food or birthday. I have a couple of specific embellishment types that I keep separated as well, like florals, labels, and small word stickers. These are the things I look for theme or specific product first, then find something that will work on my page.
Things like enamel dots and brads are sorted by type, then by colour because that's how I look for them in my process.
All my mostly flat embellishments like sticker sheets, chipboard, puffy stickers, die cuts, etc are stored together in small containers about the size of a 4x6 photo case, separated by colour. These are things that are largely interchangeable on my pages. When I'm embellishing with these I don't necessarily know what I want, I just have a general idea of what colour it needs to be. I'm happy to rummage or tip the whole container out to find things that will work and it really helps me use up older supplies as well as newer ones.
As I type this out I feel like my system is really haphazard and no one else would be able to find where anything is. I never use a pre-made kit or collection, I have always mixed and matched supplies, so this makes sense for the way I scrap and look for supplies.
