I can't stand the feeling of carpet and tile on my feet. Ew!! Sensory thing for sure. It is totally a sensory thing and a big trick from an old therapist for someone like me who gets easily overwhelmed. Feet flat on the floor, preferably naked feet and a wood or tile floor, is grounding to me. I usually wear slippers, but when I need to, I slip my feet out for a "grounding" on my hardwoods. ETA: I thought this thread was going to be something exciting and having nothing to do with socks. I enjoy some of the smart ass comments of the people who can see this thread was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. I came in for that and am shocked to see how many people are just talking about...socks.

My kids range from 21 to 31 and only recently said to me: "you never wear socks."
Truth - I wear socks to workout or do pilates but never, ever wear them any other time. I just think they are uncomfortable.

I hate going barefoot and my PF flares up when I do. I wear arch support flip flops if I’m not wearing shoes (and with shoes I wear my little toe cap socks).

I prefer socks. I have ugly feet, so cover those up!! White socks, black ones do something to the feet. Make them smell in my opinion.
I wear low ankle socks in the spring, summer and fall, long socks in the winter. Hanes does fine with me.

I spent most of my life barefoot or wearing flat sandals. I now have plantar fasciitis and have to wear shoes. With an arch. So now I’m all about socks. I'm the same. I have a closet full of cute sandals that kill me if I wear them too long so I end up wearing closed shoes. Ugh. I hope it passes. Now that I'm wearing lace-up shoes more, I cannot wear them without socks. It's just gross and smelly. I finally bit the bullet and bought a bunch of Thorlo socks. They're padded and feel better than the cheap socks you buy in a package. I also wear socks if it's cold. I bought no-show socks and they were awful.

I do not like being barefoot. I like thin no-show socks for every day.
I like thick fuzzy socks when I am covering my feet with moisturizing lotion or vapor rub.
My socks have to match and be the same. No different colors, patterns or heights of socks for me....just my personal preference. It's fine if others prefer non-matching.

Loved it. My eet and legs hated bare rass (allergic to it) but it sidewalk, black top, carpet, tile, etc, my feet were bare. But then as I developed new allergies, I noticed carpet made my feet itch as did tile. And my shoes. So socks became a thing. I do love to ground myself in the pool in the summer though.

I prefer to only wear socks in the cool months or when wearing sneakers. With dress pants I sometimes wear trouser socks, but often just wear those little liner socks instead. Otherwise, I like my socks to feel a bit loose--just not so loose that they slip into shoes! Ugh, hate that! Ever since I was a very little kid I hated tight socks. I can remember being really small and a parent helping take off my socks & shoes and there would be the pattern of the socks on the top of my foot and I'd be so unhappy about that. My dad would sit there and rub my feet for awhile to show me that my feet would go back to normal, LOL! My dad used to also insist that we not wear socks to bed because our feet had to breath. But now, when it's really cold, I put lotion on my feet before bed and then put on some loose fluffy socks despite his warnings. I never, ever wake up with those socks still on my feet, though, so apparently my feet agree with Dad. Also, in many casual situations, if I find a pair of socks uncomfortable, I'll wear them inside out and that is typically better feeling to me, because 9 times out of 10 it's the toe seam bugging me. So wearing them with the seam on the outside helps. I used to do that with my kids if they complained as well.

I don't wear socks unless I'm wearing some kind of athletic shoe. Apparently I show my old age by wearing no-show socks, but as a Gen X-er I don't care I refuse.REFUSE to wear crew socks.

Until I moved here 6 years ago I only wore socks to work. I'm on concrete, hard underfoot. I wear slippers with, now compression socks. Whatever I grab is what I wear, including Christmas all year round.
I generally wear black or matching stripes if I am going some where because I have asymmetric sneakers. Something needs to match...

I find that my heels get more dry so I slather lotion on my feet before putting on my socks. This grosses out DH. I prefer a mostly cotton blend, but they aren’t as stretchy. I also recently discovered that i was wearing socks that were too snug. Now that I wear larger socks, I get less ingrown toenails. But they also slip a bit. I haven’t found my unicorn socks. Lots of sandals out there with a good arch that are great for PF!

I’m wearing socks right now in my air conditioned house. My feet get cold quickly. The entire winter I wear socks to bed because unless my feet are toasty warm I will not fall asleep I have discovered short light compresión socks make me feel very cozy. Not picky about the brand.

I love to be barefoot. Or in flip flops. And I like light blue toes with a gold anklet. One of my favorite things about yoga is that you get to do it barefoot. Barre is 2nd best in that it is only socks, no shoes. And off topic - I miss busy - she hasn’t posted for a while

For the longest time he wore black dress socks to work and his feet and shoes supposedly got so stinky my mom couldn’t stand it. At some point he switched to white all cotton socks and I guess that really helped, so I think you’re onto something! I bet we wear the same type of Hanes ankle socks! I get the soft white ones with no compression whatsoever around the arch. I generally like them but I find that they get really dingy and gray fast even though I never walk around on the floor (or horrors, outside!) with only socks. I think it has something to do with our hard water that my laundry is washed in. I must have several dozen pairs and I will not pair a new white one with a dingy gray one even though they’re otherwise identical in style and size. I started marking the new ones into pairs with colored threads at the back so I can pair them up the way I like. The screws and plate in my foot get really painful by the end of the day if there is any kind of tightness in the arch part of the sock. Sometimes at night though even the soft stretchy socks feel like prisons to my feet. I wear shoes of some sort all day also due to the aforementioned hardware in my foot, and I detest wearing shoes without socks, so socks it is.

I really don't like socks. In the house I prefer bare feet except when it's really cold, then I do like thick warm socks. I keep a basket of them out in the winter months. I don't even much like shoes, to be honest. In the summer, I mostly wear sandals, and I definitely don't wear socks with sandals. No matter the season, I can't wear shoes without socks, so I have lots of no show socks. Fun little sock story for you sock lovers! I have a friend who LOVES his fun socks. Everyday, he posts what socks he's wearing. He tailors them to the season and occasion. It's quite fun. A couple of years ago, he made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most socks. He's a hoot. I just googled so I could post the link, and someone else took his spot in 2023. www.facebook.com/story.php/?story_fbid=122138817800071150&id=61552134523407

I'm a fan of socks all the time. If I'm home I wear them 95% of the time no matter the season. We have central AC and my feet get cold during the months that we run that (in the south, so 9 mths/yr) and for obvious reasons in the colder months. I also wear my bra from the time I get up until I put on my pajamas. It's more comfortable for me. So when I'm home you'll always catch me with a bra and socks on. Same. I have a sleeping bra. It's like a bralette. I feel uncomfortable with out it. My middle aged big boobs need support.

This thread came along at a good time. I realized yesterday that my feet have been cold because of the AC. Then I realized: "Self, you have socks. You could put some on." THEN I REALIZED: "SELF: YOU HAVE CASHMERE SOCKS." I put them on. I have only one pair. They cost thirty DOLLARS and that's from that Quince place that sells natural fibers for cheaper.
I took them off after just a few hours because it was bedtime and I don't like to wear socks to bed. But just now when I got home from work, I saw them laid out next to my pajamas. And I talked to them. I said "Should I put you back on? NO. I should wait because I can't wear you more than once more before putting you in the wash and then you have to air dry and I WILL MISS YOU, CASHMERE TROUSER SOCKS." So I am waiting for a more special occasion to put them back on.
Cashmere socks are the $hit.

When I was teaching I had multiple drawers stuffed full of socks. I loved new socks and because I have very big feet if I found socks to fit I’d buy lots of them. I have bought flat socks, no-show socks, trouser socks, and everything else. I had enough socks that I could have gone months and months without washing or repeating if I didn’t care about matching.
Now, I have gotten rid of tons of socks. I wear a lot of slip-on shoes, like Sperry, and casual sneaker-type shoes. I don’t wear socks with these. In fact, I rarely ever wear socks at all. I can’t remember the last time I wore socks with shoes. Even my warm boots are made to wear without them.
I do have some socks that I can wear around the house without shoes if my feet are cold, but most of the time I choose to wear slippers. I have Uggs and multiple other pairs that are warm without socks. I will wear socks when I lotion up my feet, but those usually come off within a couple hours of going to bed.
Most of the year I am barefoot inside the house. I have had plantar fasciitis and still refuse to give up going barefoot (haven’t had a flare in years). I feel I have more feeling and better balance, and I feel more comfortable when barefoot inside. I don’t go barefoot outside as much as I used to because it’s too easy to step on something that hurts, to get bit by something, or to burn your feet on hard surfaces when it’s super hot.
