I expected it would be Vance. It needed to be someone not woke. So no black (Scott) or brown (Rubio) people, no women. Like mentioned, it needed to be someone who has absolutely zero integrity. Someone Trump would feel confident belittling if the person were to ever get "too big for his britches." Burgum is probably too much of an unknown for Trump. He earned his money through legitimate business acumen, which in Trump's mind could make him a threat and may actually listen to concerns from corporate America / business. He seems like the traditional GOP candidate, like Pence, and that was a problem. Vance has indicated he will kneel and kiss the pinky ring, and will sign up for anything if it gets him what he wants. I agree with this. No one the base would see as a “DEI hire.” But it seems some of the MAGAs are unhappy with the choice anyway. www.rawstory.com/jd-vance-maga/

Unfortunately, I now feel we are so thoroughly fucked, I no longer care. The only thing DH and have going us is that we are both in our late 70’s, so we will probably be gone before the worst of this will peak. I feel sorry for my kids and grandchildren. The Dems have no one to blame but themselves. I feel that. DH and I are doing what we can, but at the end of the day, I don't know what else we can truly do. (Yes, we do "all the things" except go out and actively stump because you'd want to vote for Trump if we tried to convince you to vote for Biden, lol. We're NOT persuasive speakers!) And we kind of laugh sadly and say with grim sarcasm that at least we are solid middle class, white, heterosexual, and infertile, so why do we care? Oh, right, kids and grandkids, and everyone else. And while I don't completely blame the Democrats, I do feel like a lot of their internal squabbling has resulted in this situation. ETA - oops, forgot to include Christian...

I thought this reply was funny. Ben is absolutely right, too. VanceBen Meiselas @meiselasb I don’t care what political affiliation you are but I think we can all agree that Trump’s selection of JD Vance as his VP pick once again shows that Donald Trump is not just a bad decision maker but that he is uniquely the worst decision maker ever. At every level of analysis, other than who kissed Trump’s ass the most, JD Vance is the worst pick and worst person for the job. He checks no boxes other than ass kisser. And he compared Trump to Hitler.
Bill DeMayo @bdemayo Economically genius, he already has a ton of Sharpies at home lol

Vance is by far the worst of a bad lot. Rubio might not have been too bad. Trump claims the issue was them being from the same state but he has known that all along. I think he only strung Rubio along in case he truly feared losing and needed to balance his ticket.
Picking Vance sends the clear message he is sure he is going to win and right now I think he is right. His main criteria has always been someone who will do whatever he wants without pushback. Vance has to follow Trump's order because he is nothing on his own.

The Dems have no one to blame but themselves. This has very little to do with Dems. This is not about any one candidate, or any one campaign. This is because of a lack of imagination, faith in the wrong things, and a general malaise that ultimately the daily live of people won't chance enough to make preventing it worth the effort. A failure of the Founding Fathers and every person who came after that believed they had provided enough mechanisms, enough roadblocks, enough institutions that at some point along the road the person who scared people like Alexander Hamilton *so much* could not gather enough power, and other people in power would not cede *their* power to such a person. This is not a "one point of failure" this is the result of 60 years of action of a committed group to undermine the rule of law, take over media institutions, control the other branches of government. They waged a long, and systematic assault to accomplish this, and there were *many* people who contributed to its success to reach this point. The leaders proudly declare that they in fact, did this! Placing this at the feet of one party is a coping mechanism to not have to deal with the fact that a dedicated group of bad actors in positions of wealth and power can override social order and common decency.

I'm looking forward to the VP debate. I hope VP Harris tears him apart. Regrettably, women in politics have a disadvantage and get labeled as a b&tch or nasty if they're just a tiny bit aggressive. Vance is smart and will probably hold his own, but VP Harris has been doing really well in recent speeches, I think she's belatedly living up to expectations. I also think Vance's support for project 2025 and his extreme MAGA views are not going to be popular with anyone outside of the base. kid eyeing a candy storeJen "I dissent " Rubin. @jrubinblogger Kamala Harris waiting for the debate is like a kid eyeing a candy store

Aside from loyalty, Trump also wanted someone unlike Pence who is willing to violate the constitution. loyalty to TrumpJoshua Reed Eakle @josheakle When asked if he would have certified the 2020 election as VP, Vance said no.
Trump's requirement for his VP was whether they'd put loyalty to him over loyalty to the Constitution.
That's why Vance is VP and that's why MAGA is a threat to democracy.

I'm not sure what his intentions were, but the clip of a speech he gave in California in 2022 sounds like he was suggesting women should stay in abusive marriages. He later denied it. www.wvxu.org/politics/2022-08-10/analysis-jd-vance-rejects-women-abusive-marriagesSo, what exactly did Vance say at this high school in California last fall that has created such a firestorm? Here it is, word for word:
"This is one of the great tricks that I think the sexual revolution pulled on the American populace, which is the idea that like, ‘Well, OK, these marriages were fundamentally, you know, they were maybe even violent, but certainly they were unhappy. And so getting rid of them and making it easier for people to shift spouses like they change their underwear, that’s going to make people happier in the long term. Maybe it works out for the moms and dads. But it didn’t really work out for the kids of those marriages."
You, of course, can decide for yourself what you think Vance meant by that statement.
Vance insisted to me, repeatedly, that his words were being taken out of context, and that it was a criticism of "progressives."
"What I am arguing is that the progressive proponents of a sexual revolution are saying that and I reject it," Vance said. "I don’t think the majority of marriages are unhappy or are violent."

He certainly appeals to the angry white dudes. I’m not throwing in the towel. I really don’t think the events of the weekend will help Trump in the end. There are too many weird things surrounding it. Maybe I am too optimistic, but I like to think that a good share of Americans will feel concerned about the direction of this country. Preserving our democracy is a noble fight. When we throw up our hands and act like we’re screwed we discourage people who would maybe vote like us.

Current Democratic failings are largely tactical. Current Republican failings are largely substantive. It’s definitely not equivalent. Over the last 8 years after Trump arrived on the scene, Democrats obviously put too much faith in regular folks that they would see the actions of MAGA as entirely unamerican. After January 6th, lots of people, including Democrats, establishment GOP types, and the electorate thought, "This surely would wake people up!" People had too much faith in the normal Judicial process that the people in Government responsible for what happened on January 6th would be held accountable for their actions to overturn the results of the election, or that Trump would be held accountable for sharing classified information, election interference, and financial crimes. Is this really the unforgiveable sin and a greater failure than them? Faith in people and institutions? But that's what people do, isn't it? Whether it be a personal relationship, work, volunteer... people demand the one that shows up and acts something like an adult, be even more unicorn-like and perfect, rather than fault the disruptor, the one that shows up, breaks things, and then scurries off with no consequences. A lot of people actively chose this path, but it can't be their fault.

A lot of people actively chose this path, but it can't be their fault. We are also working against constant lies and misinformation that is spread like wildfire on the internet. People are so entrenched in their way of thinking that they can't even consider another idea. For example, over the weekend my cousin posted a photo of men supposedly in line for a possible job during the depression. The line was long and there were a lot of men waiting. The caption said, "How many do you think would be out there today?" My aunt who has been a frequent poster of misinformation ever since Trump's first campaign (and is rude when people try to respectfully share the true story of what she posted) said, "Hardly any because they want public assistance instead of hard work to support themselves. Government created this problem." My mom replied to the post saying, "Not many because the unemployment rate is 4%, which is considered full employment. Unemployment reached 25% then." My aunt then put the laughing emoji on my mom's post. That is just one example of this. There is no reasoning with people like that.

I am not sure that independents will. Who knows? I heard some pundits talking about him, and it was interesting. They think that Trump picked him because he is feeling more confident about winning. It makes sense, because Vance is already from a red state. Haley would have been a smarter pick IMO.

Well, DH a non-Trump Republican, who will not vote for Biden because he's "old", has declared he just won't vote this election. So instead of canceling each other out my vote will now count this year I live in a very blue state though so don't get too excited. His reasons "Vance doesn't have much experience, he can't tell what he stands for since he doesn't have much of a voting record, and isn't he the guy who compared Trump to Hitler?"

Vance, the Republican nominee for Senate in Ohio, is typically described as the bestselling author of Hillbilly Elegy, a venture capitalist, and a Never Trumper who came to embrace Donald Trump. But that snapshot doesn’t do justice to Vance, a reactionary extremist who yearns to destroy what he calls the “American leadership class” and to implement an extensive and possibly illegal program to cleanse US society of liberal influence. He compares this project to the de-Nazification of Germany following World War II. Last September, Vance outlined this message of revolutionary conservatism on a podcast hosted by a rightwing activist and self-styled masculinity champion who once declared, “Feminists need rape.” During the interview, Vance called for returning Trump to the White House in 2024 so Trump could fire every top and mid-level federal government employee to “deconstruct the administrative state,” and he noted that Trump should even defy the law, if necessary, to mount such a purge.”

i hate to say it but i never thought for one minute that he would choose a female or non-white person. when you look back at the majority of his cabinet, his VP pick does not surprise me.
it's unfortunate that the other "contenders" practically broke their necks kissing up to him but never had a chance. tim scott, in particular, stands out because of how he walked over Haley after she appointed him to his position. instead trump choose someone who has said very disparaging things about him publicly. most of which are being played on loop on social media. what a hypocrite.

I'll be living with incandescent rage as long as Trump lives, so there's that.
Last spring, we sat next to JD Vance and a couple of staffers at Good Stuff Eatery in D.C. You know how some people immediately come across as just as bad as you've perceive them to be? Yeah that.
Vote against them. Against Project 2025. Against activist judges they could appoint. Now is not the time to politely refuse to discuss politics if you care about the state of the country and the world going forward. Get mad and get them out.

Who is James Donald Bowman? Please read on!!! And he says women should not be allowed to leave abusive marriages.. James Donald Bowman was born on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio to Beverly Carol (née Vance; born 1961) and Donald Ray Bowman (1959–2023). He is of Scots-Irish descent.[20][21] His parents divorced when he was a toddler. Shortly afterward, Bowman was adopted by his mother's third husband, Bob Hamel, and had his name changed to James David Hamel.[22][23] Hamel's childhood was marked by poverty and abuse, and his mother struggled with drug addiction.[24] Hamel and his sister Lindsey were raised primarily by his maternal grandparents, James (1929–1997) and Bonnie Vance (née Blanton; 1933–2005), whom they called "Mamaw and Papaw”. His grandparents on both sides had moved to Ohio from the Appalachian Mountains area in Kentucky.[25] [20][26][27][28] After graduating from Middletown High School in 2003,[29] Hamel enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was deployed to Iraq as a combat correspondent for six months in late 2005.[30][31] There, he was assigned to the Public Affairs section of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.[32][33][34] This period of service has been described as "the defining chapter of his life"; where he first developed a sense of purpose.[31] His decorations from this period are considered typical of a Marine with a clean service record, being Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.[31] Hamel graduated summa cum laude from Ohio State University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and philosophy.[35] While at Ohio State, he worked for Republican state senator Bob Schuler.[36] After graduating from Ohio State, Hamel attended Yale Law School. During his first year, professor Amy Chua, author of the 2011 book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, persuaded him to write his memoir.[37] He was an editor of The Yale Law Journal and graduated in 2013 with a juris doctor degree. Upon his marriage in 2014, Hamel adopted his grandparents' surname of Vance.[38] *** In 2014, Vance married Usha Chilukuri in Kentucky, in an interfaith marriage ceremony.[213][208] She is a devout Hindu and he is Christian.[213][214] They have three children together.[215][216] During the mid-2010s, Vance and his wife lived in San Francisco.[217] In 2017, Vance received an honorary degree from Centre College.[218] In 2017, before Obama left office, Vance wrote in the The New York Times that he respected Obama on a personal level, because Obama had childhood struggles similar to his.[219] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._D._Vance
