The other Olympic thread has me wondering how others watch the Olympics now that they are adults/older.
I too miss the days of huddling around the TV in the evening and watching the games. Sometimes live, sometimes pre recorded due to time difference. Seeing the opening ceremonies and catching up on medals won per country.
I haven't watched the games since Atlanta. And that was limited to swimming and gymnastics.
To me they just don't seem the same anymore. And I lost interest.
So where do you fall? If you watch less or not at all, why? And if you watch more now, why?

I will probably watch a fair bit this time around, as it is in my time zone and I have nothing scheduled (except a pesky brain surgery) during the games. I probably watched less as a kid for two reasons: living in Australia meant that time zones were not usually friendly for extended watching and (my age is showing here) we tended to get highlights, not wall to wall coverage back then.

I don't really watch the summer games. But I love the ice skating and the skiing events for the winter games.

I've never watched the Olympics, it's not something I get enjoyment from.

I LOVE watching the Olympics but I hate the spoilers that occur when the time zone is so far ahead. I will still watch prime time events.

Once the USA started letting in professional athletes, the Olympics were no longer of interest to me.

we used to be big fans. but the olympics has gone the way of sports - too much abuse, $$ and cheating.

Watching the Olympics was a big event when I was growing up. My dad was a huge sports fan and we only had one TV so when he watched the Olympics we all did! I'm a big sports fan as well and still enjoy the Olympics - so much so that I was a volunteer for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City (and I hope to be a volunteer for the 2034 Olympics there as well!) I enjoy getting to watch some sports that normally get little-to-no coverage in the US and I enjoy seeing the excitement of the medal winners, particularly those who were considered underdogs to medal. I do watch less coverage than I used to though. With social media and the internet I can find out the results as they happen so I don't have to wait to watch the TV coverage to find out what happened.

When I was a kid there was no cable so we had three network channels and a couple of UHF so not as much competition. They also didn't have professional athletes in the games.

I usually watch a little bit of the summer games. I will probably watch the opening ceremony - Celine Dion is supposed to be signing. I so hope she is able to do that. I will likely record on the DVR and watch later so I can fast forward though some parts although sometimes I like to watch the procession. I am a bit more curious about the equestrian events since those might be local and just down the street from us during the next Olympics.

We watched differently as kids. The Olympics took over every evening/prime time viewing hours for two weeks of which ever network had the broadcast rights. The other networks just ran repeats/filler shows IIRC.
Now you can follow preliminary competitions, heats, live finals, etc., through multiple streaming/cable options so the evening packaged shows aren't as interesting IMHO.
I still watch a bit and almost always the opening ceremony.
Figure skating, curling, snowboard cross and women's hockey are my winter favorites. Gymnastics, swimming and track are my favorite summer sports.
I'm not interested in anything dominated by professional athletes.

We love the Olympics- both summer and winter- and will watch as much as we can. It is harder though when it's in a very different time zone. We'll be trying to avoid spoilers but it's almost impossible to do that now.

When we were kids we had a lot less choices of what to watch, and it was hyped up more.

I watch the gymnastics in summer and ice skating in winter. I will watch diving and swimming if it's on but I don't seek it out.

Once the USA started letting in professional athletes, the Olympics were no longer of interest to me. This. And the same olympians being chosen year after year. I’m tired of seeing Katie Ladecky and Simone Biles.

We didn’t watch at all as a kid. My mom only allowed us 1 hour of tv a week (PBS excluded). We watch some in the evenings as adults, but don’t plan our time around watching.

My grandpa used to say that the older Olympics were so much better than the modern. He said the amateur athletes were fun to watch and it truly represented the country.
While I do not deny that Biles is a bad a$$ gymnast, I think it's best to go and let someone else give it a try.

When we were kids we had a lot less choices of what to watch, and it was hyped up more. Yes, as a kid, I watched a lot of both the winter and summer olympics. It was the highlight of the tv season, when we only had 3-9 stations and no 24/7 viewing. I find it harder to watch the Olympics now because there are different ways to watch, and some are shown live at 2AM my time. They still have the main showing in the evenings, but it is somehow different than when I was a kid.

We have a local kid swimming (won a Bronze in 2020) so I'll definitely follow him and I'll tune in and out.

oprah?
We didn't have a TV until I moved to the States in 1980 and of course, the US boycotted the summer games that year. I have vague memories of watching some of the winter games on TV in 1980 (Lake Placid) and 1984 (Sarajevo) but I don't think I watched the 1984 summer games (LA) beyond the evening news highlights. 1988? again I probably watched some of the winter (Canada) but not the summer (Korea). We only had the one television and mum loved watching the figure skating and skiing - she had gone in person to the 1964 winter games in Austria when she was teaching in Germany - but I don't think she or dad had much interest in the summer events.
After 1988? I didn't have a TV again until the early 2000s and we've never had over the air channels (rural) and often didn't have cable/dish so our access to the Olympic coverage was limited and I never did really get into a TV watching habit.

We will likely only watch women's gymnastics and tumbling and trampoline. Have to figure out when they're on so we can record them and watch later since we aren't home much due to soccer and gymnastics.

It didn't interest me as a kid and we were not allowed to watch TV anyways (or a limited amount)
I have watched it pretty much for about the last 25 years. I enjoy some of it. I do tend to get weary after about a week though.
I only like to watch what I am interested in.. Gymnastics, some swimming, volleyball and maybe a few others. I try to not see spoilers cause it sucks when you know who is winning. I tend to lose interest if I see. I am eager to see Simone Biles.. I love her... and I would think this will be her last year. I just finished the two episodes on Netflix. It was good. She is amazing. I want to see the other girls too. I pray now they are treated better now than what they were.. it's sickening what some of those trainers and that doctor did to them.

I watch more of the summer than I do of the winter. I watch ALL the swimming (previous competitive swimmer). I normally watch whatever is on prime time but I never stay up late to see who medals. I just look online to get that information especially since it's rarely live anymore.

I usually watch the gymnastics in summer and ice skating in winter, and I'll watch some of the other sports to have something on in the background. We'll also watch the opening ceremonies on Friday.
I don't remember watching the olympics as a kid, but in college we all gathered in the one dorm room with a tv during the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding days.

I watch it all. Love it all.
I did like it better when both winter and summer were the same year. I think it made it more of an event and hyped us up more.
Also, there wasn't a lot on TV when I was a kid.

I don’t watch it a bit, and I don’t really care to.
I did watch occasionally when I was growing up, but that’s when it was broadcast on TV and we didn’t have other options like streaming on-demand. I watched a lot of things as a kid that I don’t watch now that I have a choice.
