Are you mechanically inclined? Does assembling a piece of furniture, fixing something around the house, putting up wall shelves, installing back splash, replacing a lighting fixture, etc...come easy or hard for you? I am not mechanically inclined, AT ALL. I have been assembly a stand alone skinny pantry type cabinet for the last couple of days(there are about 50-60 screws and thingys). The door hinges are like a tri fold-accordion....I screw the hinge to the door based on the one(and only one) picture in the directions.....I did it the wrong way, took a break from it, un-did it, re-did it another way (that I thought should be based on holding the hinge and the door up to the cabinet)...still wrong, took an overnight break from it, finally figured out which way the hinge is supposed to go >> third times a charm. Even with instructions and directions.....stuff like this has NEVER come easy for me. Good grief....I feel like a mechanically inclined dumb ass.

Sorry you are having such a hard time. Is there someone you can ask for help?
I am mechanically inclined. Putting things together, or figuring how to fix something, I can do. I've even replaced all the parts inside a toilet tank by myself. My problem though is my size and strength. I am short so I have problems working with big things. And there are times I don't have the strength to unscrew something, pry something off, or hammer something.

I am. I had a business making custom window treatments for 16 years. It's not all sewing. Actually it's very little sewing when you sell retail. We constructed cornices, assembled Roman Shade mechanisms, and put up blinds and shades. And everything was custom fit.
I can put together furniture. I cleaned out the bathroom sink drain this week. I do get DH to change light fixtures but I've watched him. I could easily do that if I had to. Putting up a backsplash is something I would leave to a professional because I know an experienced tile setter would do a far superior job. I also do some of my own painting but hire out for larger jobs. I don't do any auto mechanical things other than checking the oil.

I am completely mechanically disinclined. I have people I call except hanging a shower curtain. I do that myself and I got a nice new one recently. I stopped watching tv because it’s too complicated for me. There are 3 or 4 remotes for my tv in my suite. Forget that. I have an iPad that I can manoeuvre very well.

Sorry you are having such a hard time. Is there someone you can ask for help? After the trial and error....I finally completed it. I could have asked someone to come over and help me with the assembly, but I wanted to do it on my own. Mechanically inclined stuff does not come naturally or easily to me. Mostly wondering if there are others like me. Everyone's personal operating systems are different....mine are definitely not mechanically inclined.

I have no real tech ability at all. However, I'm very mechanically inclined. If things come in boxes and need assembly, I'm your girl. Dh sucks at putting things together, but can think his way thru a project of his own design with no issues.

Yes, and I actually enjoy putting things together. I was always asked to assemble or fix things for others. The only disappointing thing for me as I get older is I am not very strong anymore. Between waining strength, and my ever present pain with every movement, I get frustrated and a little angry with myself. Especially since I live alone and need to count on myself. So the know how is still there but the ability is getting more difficult. Even getting up from being on my knees, with padded knee pads, is getting harder and harder. I think I need to start doing stretches and maybe some work with light weights.

I can be. I no longer opt to do difficult things but I can if needed.

Sorry it is hard for you.
I am not sure it is all based on innate skills. I think it also has lots to do with learning. My grandfather handed me tools from the time I was very little, I really don't remember not having tools of my own. Building with and without directions is good. Plumbing is gross to be avoided at all costs. Wiring wall/ceiling fixtures not so much, but I have wired receptacles and many lamps.
When I was a young mother I had car repair issues and decided I need to at least learn what repairs were and what they were talking about. I signed up for a class called 'Know your car' offered at night in the county school system at night. There was classroom time and then working on cars. I took that class many times to the point while other students were in classroom I was allowed to work on my car right there in the shop. I did almost all my repairs that way .
Skills can be learned..

Yes, both DH and I are and we’ve done lots of DIY projects at our current house and we basically renovated every room in our previous house. We installed all the flooring, all the window treatments, did all the landscaping including block retaining walls and a paver patio, installed rock siding, enclosed the area under our porch and painted every room in our cabin when we had it rebuilt in 2019/2020. I can build IKEA furniture like nobody’s business. We just put together two sets of patio furniture last weekend. I think the hardest part was getting the cushion covers on, I couldn’t believe I broke a sweat doing that! 🥵 About the only thing I shy away from is messing with anything electrical.

I put together a baker's rack all by myself this week and was very proud! I don't think of myself as mechanically inclined, but I do like puzzles and problems and self-assembly often falls into that category.

I'm so-so as needed. My DH is really good at building things so I've come rely on him most of the time.

Yeah, I'm good at it. It comes pretty naturally to me, plus I have lots of experience, and I grew up around parents who were constantly making and assembling stuff. I'm not good at explaining step by step instructions to other people, because I can't understand what the question might be. In my defense, I recognize this about myself and avoid situations where my help will not be helpful.

I'd say I am. I don't like to tackle big projects so much, but I can assemble anything from furniture to grills. I just put my smoker together this summer, but honestly, all I had to do was attach some handles and put the legs on. I have completely rebuilt my old smoker (a Treager - never again!) ... I put every new part in that thing that was possible. From the auger to the control board. It was crap.
I have put beds, shelves, and all kinds of furniture together. I have put new screens in laptops, and new motherboards and power sources in computers. There is a video for everything on how to do it.
The major thing for me is tools. If it comes with a tool, the tool is junk! I have a good supply of my own tools, and DH has the mother load of mother loads for tools! LOL He is a mechanical genius. He can do anything from re-attaching a broken arm on a beloved Barbie doll with tiny screws and having it still fully functional to splitting a huge 4WD tractor and overhauling the engine.
I love that my kids are not afraid to tackle things. I've seen my daughter replace her taillight and put a new lock in a door. My son does most the repair work on his own car and for friends, and that is no where near his career choice. But he grew up fixing stuff with his dad and Pappy. He even wrote quite a detailed story in second grade on how to put a tractor tire back on the bead by only using ether and a match. Yikes. What happens when the kids are left with Dad for the day....

I like to think I am. Mostly because we never had the money to hire anything to be done for us. My Dad taught wood shop so we always had access to pretty much any power tools we needed and we remade all sorts of furniture or did projects. I finished off my own basement guest rooms and a sCrapbook room because by the time we built this house DH was already in a wheelchair. My Brother hung the drywall but the walls insulation taping mudding and painting was all me.

No, but I am also inclined to give up too easily if I don't crack it in the first few minutes. I am lucky enough to have a very mechanically minded DH so I rarely have to do stuff like that but I like to think I could watch some videos, and apply myself to do it if I had to

I once put an entire ikea piece together completely backwards. I didn’t realize it until the final piece didn’t fit.

I can assemble things. Although the office chair I bought had horrible instructions and pictures. I figured it out despite them! I get seriously stressed out and rarely try repairs. My DD will tackle a lot of things like that.
I did manage to reinstall my Ring doorbell after it somehow got disconnected from the wi-fi. I was pretty proud of that!

Yes, and I have some tests to prove it😀 My mother was too.
I also am good with maps and navigation. The easiest way to make me angry is to tell me all women are bad with directions.

I don't think it is an inclination, but learned and practiced. I was taught to learn how to repair and assemble things and not to ever be dependent on someone else unless it requires more advanced skills such as wiring or plumbing a house or the now complex vehicle repair. Also, offended by the notion of defining tasks and not learning or doing them because it is men's work.
Another point is I learned a lot because I could not afford to pay someone to do things, so always had to do things myself.
Now at this point in my life do I want to install a toilet or replace a garage door opener? No, too lazy but know how to and have done these things.

Because I lived alone for so many years before getting married, I was forced to master some basic skills--e.g. putting IKEA furniture together etc. I used to watch PBS handyman shows so I knew what tools were what and could do the basics. It's mainly just patience and reading the directions carefully. I have begun changing flat tires even though I had AAA, just to say I could do it, but was always rescued by some good Samaritan. I now lack the grip strength to do things, so the mechanical stuff falls on DH, who is an engineer.

I am the handywoman at my house. But I don't do it for fun. I've put up shelves, I can put together furniture pieces, I paint, and countless other stuff around the house. Youtube is very helpful for some stuff. I researched how to fix our washer, my DH did the work, but I supervised because I was the one that watched the videos.

I would say possibly.
I don’t mind putting things together and can typically with instructions, although there are often missteps or me not paying enough attention to small details/over confidence that I can do it by skimming the instructions . 😆 .
I do think I am much better at figuring out the problems and issues when things aren’t right/don’t work right. I live alone and for many things try and do it myself if it is something I think I have a shot of doing fairly well and/or it not costing me a bundle to fix if I mess it up.
ETA - I am very good at what we call “McGuyvering things” though. Using weird or different things (found/cheap/or because something doesn’t really exist) to get a desired outcome on a project. I am not sure if that is considered being mechanically inclined or a different skill set?

I am, somewhat.
I can put together assembly-needed furniture, do non-electrical/wiring, non-major plumbing stuff around the house, etc.
What I struggle with is when either:
1. Instructions are clearly not written by a native English speaker (and I read in English), so there is a bit of figuring it out. I also really appreciate detailed diagrams, and not a vague shadow of what may or may not be the product I'm putting together.
2. "Old House Surprise"
My home was built a hundred+ years ago. Plumbing and electrical was mostly updated in the 70s, and is up to code. But there are always surprises, like when you think you can do a simple drywall repair, but the wall ends up being horsehair, plaster, and lath. It's a mess, and not simple anymore.
