I never thought I was a much of a prude but I'm watching women's beach volleyball and there are butt cheeks everywhere! Their uniforms are teeny. I saw some butt cheeks with gymnastics but I feel sorry for the volleyball players because there's not much to prevent them from getting sand in their nether regions My rant is over

I don’t mind seeing them but I don’t know how they resist tugging them down a bit.

I don't know which athlete it was, but on the floor exercise, one camera was in a bad position, if you know what I mean. The girl was doing a non-athletic skill on the floor, so she was in a particular position for a bit. I am not a prude, but it made me a little uncomfortable.

Remember a few years ago when the beach volleyball players asked if they could wear shorts instead, and were told no? There is a distinctively male audience making those decisions. (And similarly, the Egyptian team is dressed in head to toe black, completely covered, to please a different set of men.) ETA: It was the Norwegian team, and they went ahead and wore shorts and paid the fine. www.essentiallysports.com/olympics-news-wow-norwegian-womens-beach-volleyball-team-refuses-to-wear-bikini-bottoms-at-2020-tokyo-olympics/I'm also reading that NCAA is now allowing college volleyball players to wear longer shorts or tights instead of the butt-huggers (that caused at least one very insecure sophomore - me - to drop out of volleyball in 1987 rather than wear them in public). All to the good. Stop making women's sports uniforms for the male gaze. (To be clear, I was no loss to volleyball. But I was very embarrassed about having to wear those shorts.)

Obviously it didn’t work.

Unless males have to wear "Budgy Smugglers" when they play, then they should all be able to wear less revealing material. This rant came from a friend's FB post where she and her husband are at Lollapalooza and apparently there are butt cheeks everywhere. I've got butt cheeks on the brain!

Some of the teams are wearing tights - at least they were in the pool play. I saw both a French team and one of the American teams wearing them.

I have watched a few matches and I think at least one team was wearing shorts. If they have the choice, I am surprised that the women would choose the bikinis. I think that would be annoying to wear while playing volleyball.

I just watched the US playing Italy and both teams had on the skimpy bikinis. There are two US teams - one chose to wear tights, one chose to wear bikinis. I'm glad it was the athlete's choice this Olympics. More info on opening up choices here for those interested: wwd.com/pop-culture/celebrity-news/beach-volleyball-player-uniform-olympics-1236509653/ETA I should say one of the US teams wore tights the day I watched (a couple articles mentioned that the first few days of play were cold and rainy, so some teams wore tights those days, but reverted to bikinis later in the tournament - they didn't mention the US players specifically. I didn't realize that they'd been free to wear more modest options since 2012. Many say they prefer the bikini as it gives fewer areas for the sand to hide.

I watched one match where one player on the team had tight pants and a tight short sleeve or tank top, while the other player had tight pants and a long sleeve top. So some teams have definitely moved away from bikinis.
Which beyond any other issues mentioned, also can cut down on the amount of their skin baking in the sun all of the time.

The men tend to wear more covering their bottom halves in gymnastics as well. To watch the sports, myself, I don't mind what anyone wears, but I absolutely feel for every female athlete out there who either dislikes having to show so much skin period, or who at least dislikes that these days cameras are everywhere, capturing every angle, and are showing every part of every person so close-up. And then on top of all of that, they now have the entire internet full of comments about every aspect of their bodies as well.

I too remember the shorts vs Teeny Bikini controversy and thought it was such a horrible decision not to allow them to wear the shorts. Truly such a sexist decision.

I think the uniforms should be materially the same- if the men beach volleyball players are able to play the sport in shorts and a tank top, then the women are also able to play in shorts and a tank top.
If the men can play tennis or badminton in shorts and a t-shirt. The women can do the same.
Note that we arent seeing any men in skimpy costumes so it os definitely a sexism/misogyny thing.
And regarding the women's bodies, it doesnt matter if they "have the body for it", they shouldnt be required to let the world see that much of them if they dont want to

Like you, I don't consider myself a prude, but I admit that I dress pretty modestly...it was just my upbringing I guess. However, I expect to see some skin for summer sports. However, I was watching some of the artistic swimming competition and thought to myself...dang, why are those girls even bothering to wear anything, they may as well be naked...g-string suits. It seems to me it would be uncomfortable to perform in that but I guess they are use to it.

I only caught bits of the competition, so might have missed it, but typically those costumes consist of a lot of flesh colored material. They're not as bare as they appear to be. The diving actually bothered me more than most of these - and it has nothing to do with modesty or not wanting to see butt cheeks. The suits just looked poorly designed. As my dancing daughter will tell you, a leotard or suit riding up is way worse than any other configuration.

The diving swimsuits are very high cut and look uncomfortable. I am surprised they don't get super wedgies when they dive.
As far as the beach volleyball outfits, I just think that wearing skimpy bottoms would lead to a lot of sand in the cooch. There's very little coverage for that area and I think it would be super uncomfy.

Eh doesn't bother me.. as long as they have a choice (which from the comments sounds like they do now). Damn if I had a body like that I probably would wear the skimpy outfit.. HA. I think the men's Speedo swimsuits bother me the most.. LOL.. It's like I want to watch but don't want to.. lol.. (it really doesn't bother me.. it's just weird to see that bulge out there like that.. haha)

I found this article that explains what's required. They do have shorts as an option. At the bottom of the article is a quote from a player about why she prefers wearing a bikini. (She said that a 1-piece holds sand and is distracting).

And of course there are men online complaining about the teams that are choosing to compete in leggings or shorts. The misogynistic comments never take long.

I noticed it in synchronized diving this time. Not sure if this is new or I’ve just never noticed? The butt cheeks don’t really bother me but I find it ironic that it’s only women’s buttcheeks. No one is making men wear something that lets the cheeks hang out.
