If you're calling someone besides close family/friends or in a professional capacity, do you state your name when you call someone or leave a message/voice mail, or do you assume they will get your name (or number) from caller ID? For instance, in pre-cell phone/ID days, a friend might call and say "Hi Melanell, it's Susie Jo.", but now they might just say "Hi Melanell, I wanted to ask you something..." I've had a very few instances in the past where people left messages with either no name, no number, or both, because they figured it would be saved as part of the message/voicemail. But sometimes, the phone doesn't give the info it should. I thought of that today, when my mom, of all people, called us on a landline. The phone failed to show her name or number, even though it normally does, and she was very upset at that moment, so she didn't sound herself. My youngest answered the phone and when I hung up, they came to ask me who it was, because not only did they not recognize her voice, but there was no name & number on the phone to clue them in. (The situation all worked out fine, by the way. It just made me think of other times when caller ID failed to do its job. )

It depends. When calling a friend or relative, I’ll say “Hi, Jane Doe, thai is Katlady.” I do that even if it may show up on caller ID who is calling. I always leave my phone number, even with caller ID.
When I call a business, I state what I need/want first. They may either transfer me or deal with me. Eventually, I state my name. I don’t usually say my name until they ask for it. My convo would go like this, “Hi, I need to make a grooming appointment for my dog.” They’ll either put me hold, transfer me, or say “Sure, what is your name/phone number on file.” And like personal calls, I always leave my name and phone number if I have to leave a message.

I think the only people I ever call other than by prearrangement are people for whom ny name will show up when I call.

I think the only people I ever call other than by prearrangement are people for whom ny name will show up when I call. That's how it should work for me as well, and how it should have worked today, but every so often it doesn't work. I don't know if it's an issue on my side of the equation, or the caller's, and if it's mine I don't know if the phone itself is glitching or if it's an issue with the VoIP service we use. I'm clueless basically.

I always state my name first when I am calling just about anyone ... in a more formal manner if it is to a business ... "Hello, this is leannec speaking. I would like to ..."
If it is friends or family I just say "Hey, it's me!"

When I call a business - yes "Hello. This is Linda Surname..."
When I call a person (my kids, dh if one of us is away, my bestie)- it's usually preceded by a text to check that it's a good time to call so probably not as much

I would never assume that the person I'm calling can see my name and number. I learned a while back that you phone carrier sometims is responsible for your name not howing up. If a person is at a business, they maybe on a system that once the call is transferred, that info is lost. I always I denitify myself and definitely leave my phone number if leaving a message.

I always say "this is bc2ca" when making calls and include my phone number when leaving messages.
I get really annoyed when I leave messages for medical appointments and the call back comes from an unknown number or identified as "scam likely". The do I answer or not decision means 50% of the time I ignore a call I'm waiting for and 50% of the time I answer a pollster or sales call.

I rarely leave messages. My friends and family can see that I called and will just call me back. With anyone else I call them another time.

There are a handful of people who I know have my name in their phone and who I call on their cell phones. So most people I identify myself unless they beat me to it and say my name.

I always say my name if I’m leaving a message. It depends on who it is whether or not I leave my number.
If I’m calling someone that does not know me, and they answer, I always state my name.

I give my name. At school our guidance counselor never gives his name. I just get a call "Can I see __________?" I've learned if they don't say who they are, it is him. It is still kind of annoying, though.

I always give my name unless it's to immediate family or friends. It annoys the heck out of me when people just say Hi and start talking about why they are calling without identifying themselves.

I almost always say my name or who I am. Even if I call my kids I'll say 'it's your mom'. I'm old school that way:)

I won't assume they can get my information off caller ID. I'll leave my name / number at the beginning of the message and then again at the end. The only person I talk to on the "house phone" is my 79yo aunt. I talk to her every Saturday morning for 2+ hours.

Work - yes Friends who I talk to daily - no Friends who I talk to on a semi regular basis - not usually Friends who I talk to once and a blue moon - yes Family - no Friends/family who I never talk to - yes
My husband - yes, every time - it's a standing joke between us. We always announce ourselves.
Leaving a voice mail usually yes unless it is my mom/sister/bff. Kids I would say 'it's mom' CALL ME NOW... lol
When I worked for the State, we had to call different people within the facility all the time. It was weird because so many would not leave their name and I had no clue as to who they were. It was the oddest thing. Our phones only showed an extension. Most of the time I had no idea who's extension it was. Made it really difficult to call anyone back. I finally gave up and thought, you can't leave your name, it must not be important enough.

If I call a business, I always lead with my name. I did that yesterday when calling the auto shop.
I generally text and ask friends/family to call me when it's convenient for them, so it doesn't apply.

yes, i do. i want the same courtesy when people call me and they are not someone i readily know.
if i can go on a tangent, my bigger pet peeve than no-name-givers is with people who don't have a cadence when giving phone numbers or long numbers over the phone so that it's hard to jot down. when i give a phone number, i say with a certain cadence. 123 (area code), pause, 456, (next three numbers), pause, then 7890. i hate when people say 0123456789. wait wait wait, slow it down please. social security number 123 pause 45 pause 6789. not 123456789 in super speed.

I leave my name for people like that when I leave a message. I don't want them have to scroll through their caller ID to try to find my name. I appreciate when others do that too.

They may say the beginning at a nice pace, but then it is like a race to say the last 4 digits.

I'm not sure I'm even capable of reciting a phone number as one big string of digits. I'd probably mess up my own number trying! Exactly! i definitely have a cadence when reciting numbers. one time, i was talking to an insurance adjuster and giving out claim information. he paused and said "i like the way you give information. very easy to understand." that's when i knew it wasn't just me who got annoyed at people blurting out numbers or letters in rapid succession.

Always. Except my kids. Whose Caller ID actually matches their name? LOL That's not my experience anyway. I get a lot of people whose phones are on someone else's account or I get oddly abbreviated IDs.
Honestly, if I'm going to listen to a voice mail, my brain doesn't match up the number or ID by the time I get to the message. So, I'd just be irritated if you didn't say your name.
When making calls from work, I leave my name and my number, then the message. Ten to one, they call my boss back, not me. So, really if you are not leaving your name, you're leaving a lot to chance. I just think you make it easy on a person.
As an aside, if you say your phone number really fast - stop it. I'm trying to write it down. (This has irritated me my entire adult life and it just seemed the place to say it. LOL

I even spell out our surname this way. I break it down into the same groups of letters every time. So say it's Cammarota, I break it into 3 groups of 3 letters each time I spell it. Cam mar ota. One day I started off wrong, and said the first 4 letters together, and my brain nearly short-circuited. I thought to myself "I'm going to misspell my own name, aren't I??"

I hardly use the phone app on my camera. 100% this! About the only person I actually talk to on the phone is my DH. If I have to call a business I almost never leave a message, but if I do I leave my name and phone number.
