UPDATE- 9/26 post procedure:
EGD UPDATE:
All awake and on the way home! A little drowsy, but all good. No structural issues. A little inflammation in stomach. Lump sensation could be remedied with steroids. No signs of cancer, ulcers or masses. Praise God!
UPDATE 9/26:
Today is my EGD procedure. I’m on the way to the hospital now for my 6:30 am check in. UGH 🤪
Slept horribly last night, but hope to get a good nap while under! Procedure should last 3 hrs from check in to check out.
Here we go!

UPDATE:
First of all, my morning sucked. I didn’t sleep well, and was awake around 4:30. It was POURING out, so I drove an hour in unknown territory in the rain, in the dark. THEN, when I went to check in, the lady at the desk said I wasn’t on the schedule. Thankfully, I had my paperwork saying so, but they had to go through all these hoops to get me in. Original appointment was at 9am, and I ended up going back around 9:30.
The numbing solution was yucky. It made it to where I couldn’t break through my nose. I am not a mouth breather, so it started out rough. I didn’t panic when they put the tube in, but I got a little warm.
I did NOT like the think that made it feel like I had a large, hard lump in my throat. Anyway, all tests went well. I had to do one any extra time because I cleared my throat too soon. Oops.
The nurse was awesome, and talked me through everything and kept me calm.
The worst part was actually removing the tube. Awful!
After the tests, he said that he saw a hernia, but that everything else looked good. Got great images. The good news is, he said he didn’t see any weakness, which is great news!
Anyway, I’m still alive, had a smoothie for lunch, and am chilling with my pups, and about to take a nap. I’m exhausted!
Two more tests to go, one being on Thursday. At least this time I’ll be sedated!

If you have had the esophageal manometry test done…did you survive???🤣 I am a nervous wreck about having a tube in my nose/throat.
Please tell me stories to CALM my nerves.

I've had esophogeal PH tests and Manometery of the stomach. That is endoscopic and they sedate you. For your test, you won't need sedation. They'll spray something to numb your throat, but I won't lie. It is not pleasant when the tube is inserted. The good news is that it only takes seocnds to place it. My ph test was 24 hours and I was miserable, because I don't tolerate tubes, but many people aren't phased at all. So, you might be just fine.
Sounds like you're having a 30 minute test. It should be easy. There is a chance that you will get through it w/o any discomfort at all. They really numb you. If you're that nervous you can call tmw and see if they'll give you a valium to relax you. Then you'll need a driver.
Good luck and don't worry. At 30 minutes, they'll keep you comfortable and it'll be over before you know it.

I had one done last year. It was not nearly as bad as it sounds.
The tube is very small and they were very helpful in giving instructions on making it easier to swallow. Once it is swallowed the rest of the test is really easy and goes pretty fast. The two nurses doing the test were fantastic at coaching me through it. The test consisted of getting one small syringe of water to swallow at certain intervals, then a small cup of water to drink as fast as you can in X number of seconds. Easy peasy.
I’ve have had much worse tests on my GI journey. Good luck.

I had this last December and then went straight to an EGD, so that was a fun morning!
There is no camera involved in th8s test. They put a "wire" up your nose, then down your throat. You then have to drink small sips of water first, then a thicker liquid. DO NOT DOUBLE SWALLOW. If you do, it doesnt count and you have to repeat that swallow again.
When done, they pull put the wire (not really a wire, but idk how to describe it. It measures pressure when you swallow).
Im not going to pretend it was thw most fun Ive ever had, but it is tolerable.

My daughter has had two, the first when she was 15. She said it was uncomfortable but ok. The second one was at 19 and she had to go in by herself so I was nervous for her but she was fine. The staff are usually amazing that work in these types of roles.

Wow, times have changed! I had one many years ago and it was for twenty-four hours. I went to the hospital, they put the tube in and it was hooked up on the outside to a little machine that sat in a pouch around my neck. I swallowed some water to be sure it was working and then was sent home and came back the next day. I ate and drank and slept as usual. It was weird feeling but not anything to get over excited about.

Please try not to be too scared. You know the saying - nothing to fear, but fear itself. It will never! be as bad as you are imagining. Never. Your mind is endless. You can come up with all kinds of scary outcomes.
I’m certainly no one to talk. ha ! I can get real scared easily. But you have to use your good common sense. You KNOW you will be fine. And it will be over quick and then you and your doctor will have some answers. And - most importantly - you will be so proud of yourself. Truly. You got this. ❤️

Oh my goodness - I have one scheduled for this Thursday! I had never heard of it until after my endoscopy they told me this was the next step as they discovered a hiatal hernia and I need to do this first to ensure I can handle the surgery.
Thank you for posting this question because I have been a little nervous myself. I am used to being knocked out so the thought of being awake and trying to swallow with something down my throat kind of freaks me out. I already have some anxiety about swallowing with my acid reflux issues.
Anyway, I will be sending good thoughts and prayers your way for tomorrow! Let us know how it goes.

I know I can do it. I just have to get there and sit in the chair without freaking out. I guess it won’t be much different than feeling the “lump” I feel when I swallow. I’m just ready for it to be over!
