I woke up this morning and my lips are swollen. Like an allergic reaction. Jeremy left for work before I woke up so I sent him a pic and he's telling me to go to ER. I would take some Benadryl but I'm already exhausted because I was up half the night with heartburn.
I don't have any other symptoms. Just these weird swollen lips. But I will say I had a very strange skin reaction just over two weeks ago that the urgent care doctor couldn't diagnose properly. He ruled out almost everything and said it didn't look like hives either. But it had to be an allergy, right? It is still scabby in some places. But seems to be healing after a round of steroids.
I just don't know why suddenly I'd be developing allergies to everything. The only out of the ordinary thing that happened yesterday is that I had my teeth cleaned. Was it the latex gloves in my mouth?

I just don't know why suddenly I'd be developing allergies to everything. The only out of the ordinary thing that happened yesterday is that I had my teeth cleaned. Was it the latex gloves in my mouth? That could be the cause, but it could also be the cleaning itself. They might be using a different kind of paste. Or a new instrument where you might be allergic to the metal used. Or yes, the latex. Although most dental practices use non-latex gloves now due to so many people being allergic to latex. Take some Benadryl and see if that helps.

Give the person who did your dental work a call and see if they are using something that could cause a reaction. They might be unaware and you can be their warning or they will agree they’ve heard from others will similar experiences.

Jeremy insisted I go to the ER. So I am here right now waiting.
My sister is my dental hygienist so I can definitely ask her questions. I didn't think of all the other things.
I just feel like something is triggering everything to come out right now.

So, this is the second big reaction in a couple of weeks.
I'd go to ER to get it checked out. What if you body has not stopped reacting? it's too close to your throat. Are you on your own?
Something is going on and after the ER visit you probably need to see a specialist in allergies. Document everything you can remember about the two incidents.
Eta, glad to see you are in the ER, I know it can involve long waits but we can keep you company.

You do have another symptom- the heartburn. Make sure to mention that to them. This could be a food sensitivity!

Weird isn't it, wellway? I mean two reactions in 3 weeks? And completely different too. I am going to call my doctor this afternoon and see if she can refer me for allergy testing.

You do have another symptom- the heartburn. Make sure to mention that to them. This could be a food sensitivity! I totally did not connect the two. But yeah maybe. I've been eating a plant based diet pretty consistently. Well last night I left the dentist at 5. I told Jeremy I really wanted a grilled cheese sandwich. Like I had a terrible craving for a grilled cheese sandwich. By the time I made the drive home, I had decided that I wanted to go to Denny's and get a moons over my hammy. Which is two kinds of cheese, scrambled eggs, and ham on toasted bread. I also ate some hash browns. So I did veer from what I have been eating. But I've never reacted to any of these things before

Did you eat any of those foods near the time of the last reaction, or eat at the same place?

Ding! Ding! Ding! littlemama is the winner. Doc thinks it was a food allergy. She's not ruling out the dentist. But the heartburn/reflux was a giveaway since I don't tend to suffer from that. The swelling is starting to go down. But I am getting a shot of Benadryl, a round of steroids (again, ugh) and Pepcid. She will observe me for an hour to make sure the swelling is going down. And she wants my doctor to order allergy testing.

Do you have the receipts from your meals? More exact than relying on memory. Remember to note what you had to drink too.
The restaurant might have changed supplier, mixed up seasoning etc but it sounds like you have a pretty good starting point to help id the culprit.

The heartburn all night could also be a related reaction. Or it could just have been heartburn.
I hope you feel better soon.

And then write down everything you ate yesterday- detailed, including oils or seasonings you may have used for meals you prepared. And exactly what you ate at Denny's, so if there was a tomato on the plate, if you ate that, write it down.

He said I was scratching at my arms and stomach all night. He said he thinks allergy testing is a good idea. I'm not sure I'd be able to isolate what I ate the first instance. But this one I could totally list out everything I've had the last couple of days.

Not being sensitive to something before does not mean you won’t react now. I gave up cows milk when I went plant based but I’ve had it a couple of times since and get painful stomach cramps. Your swelling and heartburn could easily be down to a component of the grilled cheese that never affected you previously. Good luck with the testing!

However the week I was camping I ate pizza and no eggs that week and did not have any reaction. Although camping week I was on the steroids too from the first reaction. I went to urgent care the night before we left.

This is exactly what happened to me with gluten. Dudnt have problems that I associated with the gluten. Literally 1/2 my family has celiac - dr says I do not but if I eat gluten I know it and it’s painful. It only took a month. ( the time between my endoscopy & the follow up where the dr declared I do not have it )

Well one thing is for sure and that is I'm going to eat the plant based diet until I can get the testing. Because it seems too weird that I go along just fine and the minute I veer into meat, eggs, dairy something is going off the rails. I tossed and turned all night because of the heartburn/reflux. I can still feel it. Jeremy goes to work at 3 but I usually sleep until 5. So when I woke up and saw myself I was stunned. I sent him a pic. It shocked him so bad he was like you gotta go. ETA: I'm glad you know your body and have the confidence to do what's best, even if they can't diagnose.

Whilst the eggs look guilty atm, I won't rule out what they might have been cooked in. Did you have the eggs cooked the same way each time?
My sister was allergic to eggs as a child which resulted in breathing difficulties when sleeping. I can't remember exactly but am pretty sure she was only allergic to the yoke as she could have meringue. She actually outgrew the issue and loves a boiled egg now.

I wouldnt jump to the conclusion that it is eggs or cheese. It certainly could be, but there are lots of allergies to plants as well and there are some weird connections that you wouldnt expect (of course I cant come up with one off hand!). I know there is one where if you are allergic to latex, you are also allergic to some...fruit. maybe? Anyway, the allergist will sort you out either through testing or an elimination diet. Of course, I know cheese is one of the things you were having a hard time giving up, so if it's cheese, then that problem is solved!

Both times two different places but scrambled. So they might have been cooked in butter.

But I'm going to track everything I eat until I get the testing done. I'm going to call my doctor today. The ER and the urgent care are affiliated with the doctor/hospital. So she should be able to see the notes from my visits.

I agree that allergy testing is a good idea. It is so strange how you can be ok with a food for so long then all of a sudden have a problem with it. Or the opposite. My son had a reaction to pineapple (swelling lips and face) but the allergy testing came back positive for peanut butter (not pineapple). He outgrew the PB allergy. I’ve had some reactions to walnuts but my allergy testing was negative. So strange.
I hope you are feeling better and get some answers soon.
