Quick word about sleeping positions if you have heartburn - living on your left side is recommended, and try raising the head of the bed up to 6 inches if you can. Thank you. I'm pretty lucky as it is very rare. Today it was really bothering me. Sitting up seemed better than laying down so that raised head makes sense to me. I was up at 3 when Jeremy got up. And then I tried to rest my eyes. I stayed in bed until 5 and then I saw my face.

when I saw this answer, I immediately thought could it be eggs (eggs arent part of a vegan diet, right?) or cheese... or the grease the food was cooked in??? I hope you feel better ASAP! Eggs could be it. I ate eggs in Ludington the weekend away. I ate cheese too. However the week I was camping I ate pizza and no eggs that week and did not have any reaction. Although camping week I was on the steroids too from the first reaction. I went to urgent care the night before we left. Are you over 50? My Dh suddenly (like it seemed overnight) sensitive to eggs & wheat and his Dr said that he is seeing many adults over 50 suddenly not be able to eat them. DH's started with a weird neck rash, then the next time his lips swelled. Now when he tries to eat eggs or US wheat, he can't get it to swallow and will start coughing. There is a long name for it but I cannot recall what it is and he's hunting this week so I cant ask. If I think of it, I will come back and add it here. Edited to add: it's called Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

DS 2 was super sensitive to eggs and his face would swell. It's just seems so weird that I would go my whole life eating eggs without any kind of reaction and then all of a sudden it happen like this. I know that yes, this is who allergies work. But still. Take into account also that you have stopped eating eggs and other animal products for some time now. It could be that your body has reacted to you reintroducing something, whether it be eggs, cheese or a meat product.

I just turned 49. So close, very close. I hope not wheat. I swear if I'm allergic to wheat, I will curl up in the fetal position and just cry for weeks. LOL!

I told the doctor about the diet change and she agrees with you that this is a possibility. I called the allergist and I have an appointment on October 29th.

Oral allergy? It happens with a combination of eating fruits or nuts with skins and then environmental allergies mix and you get the swelling. It happens to me all the time.
It is VERY common if you eat more raw fruits and veggies. I avoid fresh artichokes and things that have peels. Recently it started with walnuts. If they are cooked, not a problem.

And wheat is in literally everything. We have figured out, though, he can have some wheat products if they have been processed in Italy and other countries....but absolutely nothing processed in the US. His gastroenterologist said that is pretty normal because of all the extra things added to US products. So once or twice a month, DH can have pasta that we buy online that has been imported. And on vacation last week, DH was able to eat all the bread he wanted because we were able to determine that it was imported from Spain (I think). So, he can have some, as long as it is not grown and harvested stateside. But for the eggs? He cannot have any, from anywhere. We carry Epipens literally everywhere now.

My mother never had an allergic reaction until she was 70. All of a sudden her lips would swell and her throat. After much testing she found out she is now allergic to cinnamon. It's amazing how many things have cinnamon in them.

This thread is so instructive and interesting. Jeremy's girl I hope you continue to feel better and get answers! Reading some of the responses, I wonder if either eating something every day, or often, OR abstaining from a food for a long time and then eating it are both things that can cause a reaction/sensitivity? If so, seems like the remedy is to vary your diet over time. I am so curious if anyone has researched or written about this. There was a NYT article in the past week about peanut allergies - my daughter has one - and how they now think that the guidance to avoid peanuts in young children was likely a cause of more allergies. The rise of peanut allergies after pediatricians started giving this guidance on avoidance is stunningly high.

Sorry you are going through this. It is scary when you don't know what is going on.
I had a friend that developed a whole bunch of allergies and the allergy doctor she went to said many women develop or are relieved of current allergies when they start to go through the change. If after you go through the allergy testing and you find that it is indeed a food allergy, one will still not really know why all of the sudden you acquired the allergies as I don't think going through the change of life theory is proven. Our bodies are weird. lol

That's so interesting wellway . I don't live in the regions they state are high in those kinds of ticks. As the article says, migration can play its hand so there's no way to say these ticks don't exist in Michigan. (I hiked in Kentucky in May, though) When dd was in Ontario--just across the lakes--they were on tick look out all the time in summer. This spring there was a scare here in NE Alberta where I have lived all my life and never had to worry about them.

With that said, both my mom and my sister have a shellfish allergy and they've known since teens, 20s. I didn't think of it until just now, but if I had a delayed reaction, it could also be shellfish for me too. I ate sushi on Monday night with my Chloe. I did have shrimp and crab. And when we were in Ludington, the first night I had a shrimp bowl. Again, would have had to have been delayed reaction. I had a friend who could eat shrimp one day but if she had it two days in a row it would give her hives. Also, there might be some cross-contamination with where something is stored. Like when you had the sushi they might not have wiped the counter well and what you had got some other shellfish mixed in. I'm so glad you went to the ER and I hope you get some answers soon.

The rise of peanut allergies after pediatricians started giving this guidance on avoidance is stunningly high. I have a friend whose son had a very severe peanut allergy. He went to some specialist and they gave him some kind of medicine, but then, a peanut. And every day he needs to have so many peanuts. And they keep increasing it and increasing it. And now he's showing no signs of allergy. Now I'm not saying this is the way for everybody or anything. I know this therapy was highly controversial and my friend wrestled with even choosing an alternative therapy like this. But I think your theory has some merit.

This particular type of tick that causes the AlphaGal syndrome has not been found in high numbers (or at all?) in Michigan. But yes, we have plenty of ticks.

Ooh, I wish I could eat something that would swell my lips up! j/k I'm glad this wasn't more serious for you! I hope you are able to figure out the cause. I came to have an oral reaction to coconut in my late twenties. I never really cared for coconut, but had never had any reaction to eating it. I was at a party and took a bite of a carrot cake that had coconut in it. I started swelling immediately. My lips were so big, I thought they were going to split, and I was pretty sure that if you had looked at the inside of my lips that it said inflate to 30psi. They hurt so badly. While I was trying to figure out what happened and get myself out of there, every girl there said, God, I wish I knew what just happened to her, just look at her beautiful lips! 😆 jeremysgirl, anyway, allergies can just crop up. My allergist said that people who come to oral allergies tend to do it in adulthood. I try to be careful about coconut, because each time the allergy reaction gets worse. However, it has become an increasingly hard allergy to manage due to the trend of putting coconut oil in every beauty product. I got caught this summer when I used hotel shampoo and conditioner that had coconut in it. My head started itching so badly I wanted to pull all of my hair out. I found a barber who could get me in right away and he washed my hair for 30 minutes and gave me a Benedryl, while ds was on the phone trying to verify if there was coconut in their products. Just be careful until you know what you are allergic to, so that it doesn't ramp up on you fast. And I am so sorry you are dealing with this.

I have a cousin with this problem. She microwaves all raw fruit and vegetables for about 30 seconds and it takes care of the problem for her.

I have been dealing with lip swelling for 5+ years - working with an allergist that long too. I've done testing, I'm allergic to many non food things. Tested for metals. Nothing. The conclusion at the moment is that certain foods high in histamine trigger this for me and more so if I have an illness or am tired already. I can eat the same meal while feeling fine, nothing and then again the next week with a mild cold and have Mick Jagger lips. I eat 50% or more plant based, 85% vegetarian (occasionally chicken/fish) and 100% gluten free. I hope you find a better answer than mine!

Some people are able to slowly add back certain high histamine foods. Dd was able to add back a little tomato products (ketchup) but not strawberry or pineapple. She also can not have any pepper (bell pepper is especially bad for her). Hers is connected to her Dysautonomia and POTS.

I had eaten eggs all my life daily and suddenly developed an allergy to them when I was about 28-29 and could not eat anything with eggs. Even some baked recipes still made me re-act on occasion.
then at about 50+ I was having some surgery and was asked about allergies when talking to the anethatist (? Spelling) who was surprised that I said I couldn’t have eggs and he thought that the allergy had resolved and now at nearly 70 I can eat eggs with no problems.

With the low histamine food diet you have to take away all high histamine foods for at least 30 days, sometimes 60 and then 1 at a time add back and see what is tolerated or what is a trigger.
Tuna was also not able to be added back.
Dd and I both have an allergy to chocolate and have high histamine reaction to it as well.
