They have closed all the schools in my area in the foothills of NC, calling for flooding and tropical storm condition. Asheville is really getting hit with rain, and all this before Helene makes her way thru NC. Both my sisters are at the beach on vacation (2 separate beaches) and I think it is safer there than here.

The radar shows the eye is going over land right now. I'm in Pensacola and we haven't had a drop of rain all day. It looks like we won't have any either. My kids are in Tampa Bay Area and they are doing good. Radar looks clear for them for the rest of the night.

Fatality in Tampa area. Sign fell on a car on I4. 2 in Georgia in a tornado. Oh no! That is terrible to read. I hope the casualties remain low, but I am sure there are people who did not evacuate and we may hear more tomorrow morning. Stay safe everyone!!

Thank you - I'm in north central Florida where I-10 and I-75 meet. So far so good but Helene hasn't made landfall yet and we're about as far inland as you can get in Florida. Our waffle houses all closed at 2pm though and that's never a good sign. wow, Waffle House closed! Now if you see Jim Cantorre as well - run. Hope you can stay safe. Will be thinking of you.

Rain, rain, rain. It rained all day yesterday in the NC foothills and continues this morning. The wind is blowing strongly at times this morning. The worst is to be in about 2 hours and then it is to be gone before lunch. I think schools are closed in the area.
I was planning to go to the Asheville quilt show tomorrow. Not sure now. They didn't open on Thursday as planned. No word yet on today, but have extended to Sunday. I'll have to find out about flooding in the area before I decide for sure.

Linda asked me this morning to let all of you know she's ok. They've got lots of trees down. But her house and her cars are ok.

I contacted Bergendurfblonde (is that how she spelled it?) and she is OK. She and her daughter got in the tub, using the precautions given for tornadoes and are OK. Her exact area was not told to evacuate. She was in category D--whatever that means.

My parents are in the far northwest corner of SC. Spoke with my dad about an hour ago(8 am). They have 11 inches of rain and no power. Still raining and the wind is still fierce. That is their biggest concern now.

She was in category D--whatever that means. They categorize which areas are priority for evacuation. A is the area in most imminent danger. The further down the alphabet, the further away from the main impact of the storm. Doesn't mean you won't get damage, just means it most isn't as life threatening. Never heard of the category system being used here until after the huge mess from the Hurricane Rita evacuation from Houston in 2005. Those of us involved in it still talk about it 19 years later.

Western North Carolina is under a 'flash flood emergency', which is the highest warning. Asheville has had 10 feet of rain and expecting 10 feet more ... Their next fear is landslides. The softer material under buildings being washed away causing building to collapse.

My SIL lives in Tampa near Bayshore/downtown. She did not lose power and the way her house is built, she was above any water. Their old house in S Tampa is in an area that is underwater and they can't get out of their neighborhood.

I am in SE GA, 3 miles from FL, just N of Jacksonville, FL. No power since 12:30 AM. Trees are down all over the area on the power lines. Lift stations for water/sewer are down because of power outages, so have to us water sparingly. If power does come back on by late this afternoon, I am headed N to my daughter’s house. Stay safe!

He said it has been raining since yesterday but classes weren't cancelled today (although earlier it looked like there was a tornado and flood watch).

Wow, it is bad enough your house got flooded, but to catch fire too is just adding insult to injury. Those poor homeowners! Double whammy. Flooded home on fire

Well my niece is on the East Coast and near Fort Lauderdale. They got a lot of rain but they’re OK. I have a cousin who lives near Clearwater Beach and his house is gone. He had tried to talk his wife into moving two or three years ago in the last hurricane hit down there, but she wanted to stay on the beach. He had damage during that hurricane, but he is pretty sure that his house is gone. They haven’t been able to get down there. But his 88 year-old Mom along with he and his wife have evacuated north east of there to their daughter and her husband‘s home. Thank you for asking

I will guess it will go much further than Missouri. Carla, a category 4 storm in 1961, hit Texas and went all the way into Canada before it blew out into the ocean. Look at the path it took:

We live on the Treasure Coast, not in the direct path of the storm (east coast of FL). The school districts all around us closed yesterday. We had a bit of rain and some 30 MPH gusts of wind, but nothing catastrophic. School is open today and I am back in the office. I've been reading news reports all morning and some areas of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina are devasted. The storm made landfall as a category 4 hurricane... 140 MPH sustained winds and massive amounts of rain. I hope all the Peas are safe. This was a massive, destructive, highly impactful storm.

We are in TN. We have been getting rain today, although not hurricane rain. The hurricane stuff starts tonight. It's the wind which will be nasty. They are saying 35-60 mph winds could hit us. We are in the valley. East of us on the plateau will have less wind. We've tied our boat down. Moved our potted plants up next to the house. Oh.....I find this interesting....we've had rain all day today. The hummingbirds are fighting each other for food. We have 4 feeders out. We will pull them in tonight because they are glass. I don't want to be picking glass out of our mulch when this is over. Edited to add….campgrounds in the Smokies are closed. Roads are closed, schools closed, stores closed…..so if you’re headed this way check first to see if the mountains are open. I'm in Knoxville. There is a lot of flooding by us (Smokies, North Carolina) but we are okay. Just lots of rain and some wind.

CNN Helicopters evacuating multiple people, patients and staff etc, off roof of hospital in Erwin(?) TN Ambulances waiting at drop off location. *** This is not updated... People HAVE been removed Ballad Health said it was notified Unicoi County Hospital, located in Erwin, Tennessee, needed to be evacuated at around 9:30 a.m. local time Friday. But because of flooding and high winds, ambulances and helicopters could not reach the building safely. Erwin is just over 40 miles north of Asheville. A total of 54 people were moved to the roof, and seven others are in rescue boats, Ballad Health said in a statement. The hospital system said there were 11 patients included. The hospital has since been “engulfed by extremely dangerous and rapidly moving water,” the statement said. Because of how quickly the water was rising around and inside the hospital, rescue boats were also not able to get people out safely. Ballad Health said the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and the National Guard are working on “a dangerous rescue operation.” Michael Baker, a town alderman, said several helicopters are currently attempting to get hospital patients and staff off the roof. “There’s a helicopter on top of the hospital, and we have another one, hovering nearby to start to carousel getting everybody off, but this is a team effort,” Baker told CNN. “The water came up so fast, I literally looked at the owner and said, ‘We’ve got to get out of here,’” Baker said. “This is a serious situation … I have not heard any reports of any casualties but I would dare to say this is a life and death situation.” This post has been updated with additional details. www.cnn.com/weather/live-news/hurricane-helene-florida-georgia-09-27-24/index.html#cm1l2i23x00003b6pxckabgdv
