Erwin TN
The majority of the people stranded on a Tennessee hospital roof on Friday have been rescued, the alderman of the town said.
Michael Baker, alderman of Erwin, Tennessee, where the hospital is located, told CNN that there are just “a handful” of people left on the roof of Unicoi County Hospital. Erwin is just over 40 miles north of Asheville, North Carolina.
The 54 people, including patients, were stranded after rapidly rising waters from Hurricane Helene made evacuation impossible Friday morning, Ballad Health said in an earlier statement.

My ds in Georgia has lost power and cell service. He says that the cell service is the worst because he has no way to get updates unless he drives into the town about 10 miles from his rural area. The entire area is out of power so he's not hopeful. They're going to have a big neighborhood cookout this evening. I told him that he needs a battery-powered radio at least. As much as he's prepared for everything -- they have lanterns and batteries and canned food, etc., etc. -- they do not have a battery radio. Guess what he's getting for Christmas? My dd in southern Virginia was woken up in the middle of the night by the emergency sirens and alerts to take shelter from tornadoes. Thankfully none ended up right by her. And of course neither of them has it as bad as what I'm seeing on the news in Florida and the Carolinas.

I have a cousin who lives near Clearwater Beach and his house is gone. He had tried to talk his wife into moving two or three years ago in the last hurricane hit down there, but she wanted to stay on the beach. He had damage during that hurricane, but he is pretty sure that his house is gone. They haven’t been able to get down there. But his 88 year-old Mom along with he and his wife have evacuated north east of there to their daughter and her husband‘s home. Thank you for asking This is awful. I'm so sorry. Thanks I’m just glad that they are all safe including my aunt. I had to stop watching The Weather Channel because I just got too sad

Our internet and phone went out minutes after I updated early this am. No estimate on when they will be back. We do have power. A friend’s power has been out since early am with no estimate on that either.
A couple of minor things happened at my house that we can fix next week. However it looks like a tiny twister went thru the corn field next to us. We are hundreds of miles from the coast.

We never lost power past that ten or so minutes last night. Very lucky.

Guess what he's getting for Christmas? . Pick one of the ones with either solar or a crank for back up power when the batteries are dead. We had the crank one & it gave the kids something to do lol crank the radio for power.

We are hearing the fatalities around us are trees falling on homes and maybe a car I think. The trees are huge and old, and are not accustomed to that kind of wind, especially not with the ground sopping wet from 12+ inches of rain. It looks apocalyptic here with the amount of trees that are down. We cut through 19 trees in a half mile stretch of road yesterday to try to make at least a one-lane path. We were in the direct path of that beast. Unusual for it to still be that strong so far inland. We are 500 miles from the gulf coast.

for emergencies, I recommend along with crank radio, a solar portable lantern. luminaid has them.. the more expensive ones include a phone charger slot. they can be charged with a plug or just putting in the sun and blow up. not super cheap but so handy and no batteries required!!!

Those are good back!! I saw a picture posted yesterday from Ohio. I you blocked out the damages, the sky was bright blue, sun was shining.. looks like a spectacular day... So that makes solar great!

Praying for all those still facing the impact of Helene - it was truly a devestating storm over so much of the Southeast Thank you jeremysgirl for updating for me. Power JUST came back on (Saturday afternoon)- we lost it late Thursday evening. Very grateful to all the linemen out working in the heat and humidity here. We're fine. House is fine - only damage was to a piece of trim on the screen room. LOTS of tree damage, multiple trees down in our yard including one blocking the driveway, and many, many branches down as well. Several sections of the side privacy fence are down and shattered. VERY glad we had those trees by the house taken down earlier in the year or things would have been a whole lot worse. County-wide - 99% were without power post-storm and we're only down to about 74% without now so that's going slowly. There were probably tornadoes - I haven't seen anything official but we definitely had warnings and there's damage consistent with them locally. And yet, we're still doing SO much better than the Gulf coast.

Is Biltmore (the original huge home) still operational?
I saw something called Biltmore Village on a news feature, but it seemed it must be a surrounding community, not the estate itself.

Saying prayers for so many. We had high winds, heavy rain, our power went out at 2:45 pm yesterday and came back on at 10:45 last night. Many trees down and wires down but that's minimal compared to what others are going through.

We were up there right after the 2004 flood and the estate was affected but not the house or key buildings. They were on higher ground or further from the French Broad river. I don’t know about this flood yet.

We are still without phone and Internet. This seems to be affecting thousands of homes and businesses yet I can get little info. Something happened to a switching station in South Carolina. North Carolina and Virginia are affected at least with no word as to when service will be restored.
PSA have cash on hand for emergencies. All gas stations here are cash only. You can’t get extra cash back at the grocery store. Some businesses are cash only. No internet= limited commerce.
Traffic is a challenge too, something we almost never deal with. Not sure entirely why other than some detours. I gave up going to the next town over. I wanted to go to the library for books and movies but they were closed probably because of the internet so I shopped at Goodwill- with cash only.
We are very fortunate to have had only a short power outage and no trees down so far.

CNN. Just interviewed Linda(?) Govus, communications person in Asheville NC. people are still stranded from flooding and landslides. She says they need water, food, earth movers and cell phone service.. NOW!
Most bridges in the area are down/gone. Almost impossible to get anywhere on the ground.
***
Total death toll altogether about 61 for the storm. FL, GA, NC, SC, TN, VA...

My dad managed to get out yesterday and said the amount of downed trees was unbelievable. They did get power back yesterday but they are so fortunate. The electric company said 95% of their customers were without power. I was really surprised Clemson went ahead with their football game last night. So many of the places being talked about in NC are places we have visited and hiked. I can't believe some of them are destroyed. We are supposed to go visit my parents Oct. 10 but I think we will cancel. With I40 being closed it would take us an extra 2 hours to get there.

My ds in rural Georgia finally got cell service back last night, although it's a bit wonky (his word) still. But no power, and the projected date for that is October 3!
They've cooked up most of the meat that was in the freezer, and put some of the cooked things in a cooler with ice. They've been cooking on a campfire outside, and ds said the stars are absolutely amazing since the entire area has no power. His stepdaughter is happy now that the cell is back and she seems to be enjoying the cookouts. She'll obviously be out of school for at least several more days but ds and step-dd's mom are making her do some schoolwork. Mean parents. haha
So they're doing okay, but the entire area is a mess.

I just learned that my ds has no running water! Mostly his whole rural town has no water. He says they're too rural to get city water from the nearest town that has city water, so their water is pumped from wells (I guess...?) As a city dweller myself this never occurred to me. He said that before the hurricane they filled up their washing machine and bathtub with water for flushing the toilet, and they have plenty of drinking water in their emergency supplies. Plus of course they can drive to the next town, about 20 miles. He said he'll have to go there for water to refill the washing machine if the power doesn't come on by tomorrow. They've been taking camp showers, lol. Fortunately the weather is lovely so cooking around a campfire in the back yard has been pleasant. Tonight's menu even includes homemade chocolate chip cookies. Apparently you can do those right over a fire. Sounds good to me.

Our internet just came back on. Yay! It's been down since Friday morning. DH has been more productive without it, I've been less productive.
I spoke to a friend who lives in a town south of Asheville. They have no power, no water, no internet. She gets one cell bar sometimes in one corner of her yard. She has a generator, food and bottled water. She filled the bathtubs before the storm so they can flush toilets. She said there are trees down everywhere. There are power lines down and some sink holes opening up.
I found out why I could not go to the next town over. There are three ways across the lake/river from my area and one of those bridges was closed and I think still closed. That will be a major problem for people getting to work. There are 18 roads in our county closed completely and many more down to one lane. Schools are closed tomorrow. Our problems are trivial compared to the western part of the state.

Same estimated date for my daughter’s power in GA… they had to drive into Augusta yesterday to be able to call us, and their cell service was finally restored this morning. They have a generator, so they still have power at their house, even though the grid is completely down.
