This one is interesting. My Dad lives north of WDW ish. The other hurricanes haven’t been an issue. He’s prepped and then didn’t even lose power. Not even the one that went up the Lake / Orange County lines.
We’re going on an International trip, leaving from Denver on Sunday. So my Dad has been scheduled to fly here, early Tuesday For months. Very thankful for the timing now, because I would have preferred he came on Thursday. But now he’s stressing a bit about his house because he won’t be there to check. Or know if he loses power for any long period. One neighbor just moved out, the other neighbor is new. His closest friends moved to near Jacksonville, so it’s not like he has a person who can come over and do an inside sweep right now. And he’s not getting home for 15 days. So we’re hoping he won’t return to any freezer surprises or any other damage that needs immediate attention.

When we have lost power at the house and had it at the office, we would head up there for heat, charging, etc. We could check back on those things to know if we had power. If they worked, we were good to go. No work, no power.

Good grief, wtf is wrong with people? Our local news station has a post on FB about this hurricane, and the things that people say/believe is unbelievable. There are really people out there who believe the government is engineering hurricanes?!?!?! Where do they get this stuff?? From Marjorie Taylor Greene! My friend is on the road from what is left of her house. She posted that roads from the coast are already backed up with traffic. I hope everyone can get inland in enough time.

When he gets back check the quarter how deep it is ( or isn’t ) into the frozen cup will reveal how long his freezer was too warm.

Remember their guy, TFG, suggested that they could shoot into hurricanes to take them out.

Freeze some containers with water. After it is frozen place a quarter in top of the ice. If there is a loss of power the ice will have melted. If it has refrozen the quarter will be under the top. If it was a short outage it will be under a bit but still near the top...

Isn't Tarpon Springs where they have a manatee reserve? How are they holding out? Do they swim deeper or farther out when a storm is approaching?

Where do people go during mandatory evacuations? On the news today they were saying every place is booked up 8 hrs out and traffic is moving at 15mph in Tampa. So it was taking 4 hrs to go 60 miles. You'd run out of gas at that rate.
And I have 5 cats, a dog, and a lizard. I guess we split the animals up between the 3 vehicles/drivers and hope we can all get gas?
I mean, we could drive North and West and go stay with either of my parents, but that's 13 hrs away.
I've been mulling this over for 3 hours now... Thinking about what I'd try to save if my entire house was destroyed. What is irreplaceable. Some things from my grandparents, etc.
This probably needs a S/O thread!

Yes I have thought about these things. This is why I don’t think I could ever be a great coastal dweller. I am not brave enough to want to ride out large storms and I can’t understand the logistics of trying to get out when the evacuations are in place - so I would have to pack up and leave early every time I heard about a big storm approaching. Nothing really temps me about that. Although living close to the coastal water sounds wonderful, for my own good I think I am a better resident of an interior state.

My friends left early in the morning, so their travel rate was about 45 mile per hour. The slowest part was leaving the Tampa area They went upstate and they have a camper to stay in. And they left yesterday, today will be terrible trying to get out. The closest we came to evacuating was during one of the fires we had. We were just less than an mile outside the voluntary evacuation area. We put important things near the doors of each room so we could easily grab them. If we still had room in the cars, we would grab whatever else we could. Honestly, pots and pans and dishes were not even on my radar. I was more concerned with things that would be hard to replace (photos, paperwork, our EHD. The boys were still at home then so we had to worry about them too. Thankfully we never had to evacuate.

My family is ok..
DIL and boys ok ... House seems fine Huge branch down hit her car trunk in driveway.. complex has no exit trees down near entrance. No power , 69 ° humid.. Boys walking to check neighbors. DIL says worst storm she has ever seen.. Very thankful, appreciates they are safe... With little damages. Again they are just east of Tampa

I read it downgraded quite significantly thankfully. Its obviously done massive damage and there's still the potential flooding to come so I can't imagine how horrific it would have been if it had stayed at the higher category!

Holly Cow! We are on the east coast and experienced multiple and very severe destructive tornadoes. D/H was closing the shutters and he came bursting in and at the same time the alert came on the phone. The dogs and I went into the powder room and he went into another interior bathroom. The tornado touched down about a quarter mile from my neighborhood and did major damage in a new development. Cars were flipped and thrown into houses, tore roofs off and blasted out windows. There were multiple areas of our county that were seriously impacted by tornadoes.
We lost power for about 10 hours but now restored, we were lucky. Lots of vegetation debris but have not really been out. They do not want people on the road so staying put. Again, we were super lucky.

whipea I am so glad to see that you are okay and have minimal damage, especially with the close call with the tornados. I was/am thinking of you and the other Peas that I knew/thought were Florida peas. I hope everyone, their families and properties are fine or at least faired better than thought. Hugs and thoughts to all affected.

My son evacuated Tampa to the east coast and they had terrible tornadoes. Thank God he is ok!
The storm was downgraded significantly by time it made landfall in Siesta Key when the eye wall collapsed which saved so much of the Tampa Bay area. The water was also pulled out of the bay which saved Tampa from being completely under water.
St. Pete did not fare as well. Waiting to hear from an anesthesiologist friend there who was hooked up to hospital power.

Evacuation isn't easy which we saw with Katrina. People with limited resources, just don't have the ability to leave. As much as people bemoan people not leaving, it's not easy if you have pets and no ability to pay for a hotel. Yes there are shelters, and I understand they're getting better about taking pets which used to be a massive barrier. Our friends went all the way up to North Carolina as they have friends there which makes it much easier with their dogs. I honestly am not sure if they would evacuate if they didn't have that option.
