based on my sister's story today:
She is on a cruise with 3 friends of similar age. At least 2 of them are single. I'm not sure about the other. All retired.
They see a man (in his 50s) at the bar. The man is wearing a shirt decorated with ducks, he has little rubber ducks in his pockets and after he sits down he arranges a semi circle of ducks in front of him, around his drink.
Would you go over and ask, "What's with all the ducks?"
...she just texted that he left the bar and his tip was a duck for the bartender.
I'd avoid him.

I’ve heard rubber ducks are the current trend on cruises, and it is causing some problems. Let me see if I can find the article, I just saw it a day or two ago. ETA mich5481 beat me to it.

I haven't read the article yet, but I hear people leave ducks all around on cruise ships for others to find. So I'd probably think he just enjoyed this cruise ship game, and he was giving away some of the ducks he found instead of placing them in a new spot? Or maybe he brought a pile of his own new ones to just give away? It reminds me of the fish extender gift business on Disney cruises. ETA: So, to answer your question, no I wouldn't go ask him anything, since I would assume I had a decent idea what the duck thing was all about.

Hmmm. I know about ducks and jeeps, but I’d never heard it was a thing on cruises.

That kind of thing reeks of needy/attention whore to me and I would avoid. Just placing ducks or something might be ok, but the having them all spread around them… no thanks.

People hide rubber ducks on cruises and then make it a game for anyone interested. I think he was just trying to find others who shared his duck hiding passion. A way to meet someone. Maybe not weird if you take cruises, but I wouldn't engage.

It's a big thing on cruises, harmless as far as I know. Lots of people hide them.

It’s a thing. Some people who leave them have a QR code or an hashtag attached and they want whoever finds it to post a picture of it to show where it goes next.

Like everyone has said it’s a thing on cruises. We don’t do it but a lot of people do, especially if they have kids. Of course the point is to hide them. I have never seen anyone sitting with a table full of them. That’s a little odd. But in your hypothetical we’re in the bar so yeah…100% we would talk to him.

Well, I don’t know, Do I WANT to meet him? If yes, maybe I’d go chat, my sister collected ducks so I notice them and ducks are sentimental to me. If I don’t want to meet him, then no, I don’t go ask him anything or strike up any conversation. Most likely I do not want to meet him no so no I wouldn’t chat.
Perhaps his tip was electronic or charged to his room? I mean I prefer to be a cash tipper but not everyone does especially on a cruise.

Rubber ducks are a thing on cruises right now. People hide them so others can find them. So I would assume he had found those ducks on the cruise and was either taking a pic of them to post or enjoying his spoils while enjoying a drink. I wouldn't think anything weird about it.

If they’re such a ‘thing’, as they apparently are, it’s a pretty dull game by now I’d think.

It sounds like a fun thing to hide and find ducks on a cruise. Nevertheless, tipping w/a duck or setting up a line of ducks(very strange) is rude unless the duck is sitting on cash or you're adding a tip to your account. I'd totally be into finding ducks. It reminds me a bit of geocaching.
Does anyone remember the frog that someone stole and took around the world? The ducks reminded me of that.
