For me, if there are ones that want to trick or treat late, that’s fine. I have the right to turn off my porch light when we’re ready. We dictate when it’s over at our house. Others may not mind playing later, and they are more than welcome to.

We have set hours of 6-8. It had pretty much died by 7:30. We went in about 7:50. We had about 120-130 TOT. I don't mind if there are older kids TOTing as long as they are respectful as others have mentioned.

We had our last group at about 8:15. I gave them LOTS of candy.

9:00 pm is my cutoff.
I have a friend who will only give candy to teenagers who are not dressed up if they can answer a civics question.

When I lived in town 9:00 was really the latest you'd get any trick or treaters coming around. At 9 we'd just turn the porch light off so they knew we were no longer handing out candy.

I had fewer trick-or-treaters than usual. Made me sad. But more dads in costume, two of them (not together) in medieval costumes! I loved it. The first ones came at 6:20 and they seemed to be done by 7:30. I left the lights on till 9:00 but no luck. cakediva, those cookies are fabulous. Lucky kids. I hope you included your contact info for marketing purposes.

Fortunately we live in a small town with set hours of 3 to 5 pm on a Sunday afternoon. Always the Sunday before Halloween. We usually get between 300-400 kids depending on weather.

Every town in my area has set hours; most are 5-8 pm. I didn’t realize so many places don’t have specific times.
I wasn’t sure what to expect yesterday as we had horrible wind gusts and much colder temps, after having been in the 80s on Monday.
For the last few years I’ve been sitting outside, with a small table for the treats. I give out full size candy bars, gum, chips, cookie packs, Goldfish, etc. This time I sat in a chair inside the garage with the table positioned so the yew tree by the driveway blocked a good bit of the wind.
I had more than I expected considering the weather. Lots of really little kids early on (one could say Halloween, but not trick-or-treat), met the new neighbors and their two little ones. Older kids were mostly later. Every kid/group was really polite, although I did have two groups with kids who all asked individually about getting candy AND chips. They were polite but maybe a little greedy.
My brother called about ten minutes before I was going to close up and go inside. I was still talking to him when two last teenage girls came up at 8:02; I told them they were lucky as I was just about to go inside.
Those two made my total 60, which is fairly high for our neighborhood. We do have some kids on the street, but not tons. A fair number come into the area by car.

We haven't had many kids in a few years now. Usually they stop coming around 8, but we've had a few stragglers come as late as 9. But, 9 is our cut-off.
As for starting, usually when it starts getting dark, like around 6PM. Before, when the time change used to happen before Oct. 31st, kids use to start coming around 5PM.

We generally only get a handful of trick-or-treat kids every year. Our latest this year was at 8:30 and he looked to be about 15 or 16. He also wasn't dressed up, but he was respectful, held out his pillowcase and smiled and said "trick-or-treat", so he got candy just like the rest. I don't care that he wasn't dressed up. He looked happy that I didn't give him any hassle over it.
I will generally turn the lights off somewhere between 9:00 and 9:30, especially if it's been a while since anyone came by. No one comes by once the lights are off.

That said, even ONE trick or treater would have been nice tonight - we sat outside from 630-730 getting eaten alive by mosquitoes and then came inside but left the lights on and the Halloween display up (with lights). I think we turned everything off around 10 or so. This happened in our neighborhood a couple of years ago. We just didn't have enough kids living here and the ones that did went "trunk-or-treat"ing instead or maybe didn't celebrate. Halloween is my favorite holiday, so it made me sad. DH said yesterday that he was happy we got some these last couple of years because he hated seeing me look like my soul was hurting.
