I really don't want any hormone replacement milocat as long as I am feeling mentally well. In my youth I could not take hormonal birth control not even progesterone only BC because it upsets my bipolar so much. Female hormones upset my mental illness more than you can imagine. I am absolutely the worst pregnant and nursing woman you'd ever want to be around, like paranoid and delusional. If my mental health falls off, I'll consider it. But that's my absolute #1 priority. I understand. Just to clarify though, birthd control (pills and Mirena IUD) is progestin not progesterone. And HRT is a lower does of hormones than BC. Not sure how much of a difference that would make for your mental health. You mentioned bladder issues you could use vaginal estrogen, they say it stays localized. Of course do you own research and talk with your own doctor. These are just some things I've learnt from researching, not saying it's right for you and your underlying issues. Thank you for letting me know. I feel like I need to accept the gift of good mental health right now and don't want to do anything to wake a sleeping baby. 😂

I had hot flashes for a few years, then my periods became erratic. And then, they just...stopped. The exact date the world shut down for Covid was the last period I had. This makes me hope that maybe that's what I'm experiencing too. Fingers crossed.

I haven’t peed myself for a week. That’s a pretty big good for me! Your symptoms may just be starting or maybe you won’t get symptoms. The skin feels better in places you would want to preserve plumpness and elasticity. TMI but for very real.

jeremysgirl, have you tried deep core exercises to help with bladder issues? Kegels helped but once I switched to deep core exercises I have no more issues. I do them about 3x per week.

I watched my mom suffer thru peri-menopause & menopause for YEARS. Well the whole family suffered. It was horrible. Watching her made me truly scared for myself.
Luckily, I’ve not had many symptoms. I will say, over the last few years I’ve come to hate summer with a passion. I despise the heat. I haven’t had hot flashes, at least not like my mom. I just don’t want to be warm. However, the night sweats were/are annoying as hell. My last period was in June so fingers crossed that was it. They were very regular until then.
I’m following in my mom’s sister’s menopause path. Their experiences were as different as night and day. 🤷🏼♀️

Well obviously those with no complaints won't complain or write a book. But those of us who have struggled mightily might feel better knowing how many women just don't say anything about it because they don't want to be seen as dried up withered crones. It's a real thing. I was in NO way implying that there aren't women who struggle with perimenopause/menopause - I know it's a real thing. BUT the OP was concerned about her lack of symptoms and I was addressing that. (((Hugs))) Gotcha, sorry if I sounded bitey!

Another one coming to say that everyone is different. I went into menopause at 41 during chemo for breast cancer. I wanted to throw myself a ticker tape parade. I had no symptoms. Now, I was going thru chemo, and my periods were erratic about a couple years before that due to the extreme weight loss from another health problem. My sister didn't have any issues either, but my youngest sister is in perimenopause and she has bad hot flashes and gets annoyed really easily. I don't know about my mom, she never talked to us about anything like that. Anyway, good luck with it.

It's good that you brought this up and that people are sharing their experience. Should happen more often.
I had gone a bit over a year without a period in late 2019, but then had a rogue period in April 2020, I'm sure related to the shock of realizing the pandemic was actually happening, so I suppose my menopause age was April 2021, which made me 54.
Fast forward to today, age 58. For a couple of years, I've had some pretty serious discomfort with sex. Like sandpaper, yikes. People don't talk about that enough, and so you feel like a freak and who wants to talk about it? Anyway, so it happens that I went to the gynecologist yesterday. She prescribed a topical estrogen cream to start with. Said it should take about 2-3 months to work. The topical stuff does not really affect people systemically so there is very low risk.
In terms of other symptoms, I had a few hot flashes, but really minimal. I have a stray one every once in a while, but I feel like I've had a total, ever, of maybe 8 or 10? So that's not an issue. I don't think I ever had night sweats or if I did, I just thought I was too hot, like there was a physical reason.
A huge positive is that I have much better control over my emotions. YAY.

One of our popular TV presenters has done a lot about peri and menopause. If you search Davina McCall on YouTube you might find a few of her presentations. This is one. She is all about taking the taboo away from discussing it. I admit I've not watched her programmes or read her articles/books, I was a lucky one where it was if a switch was flicked and no symptoms, everything stopped. I always say it was my pay back after 40 years of hell.

I had to have an ablation in my early 40 due to constant heavy bleeding. It stopped the bleeding but I have no idea when I entered menopause. I remember having I guess, hot flashes, but can't remember when they started. I never kept track. Now that I'm in my 60's, I figured I'd be almost through with menopause. I still get night sweats. Thinning hair has been happening for a while. Vaginal dryness has not been a problem. I did experience extreme itchiness earlier this year, which is a symptom. But turns out I all of a sudden became allergic to wipes I've used. Maybe the company changed an ingredient in them but once I stopped using them (process of elimination) the itchiness went away. So I thought I had an easy time of it. The night sweats weren't bad. No soaking of my bedding. No suicidal thoughts.
However, and I'm not sure it could be a sign off menopause, but I get bouts of rage. I put it off thinking it is because of the political scene. I'm usually an even-keeled person, but these moods are very concerning to me. It's a newish thing, and seems to have gotten worse the past couple of months. So far I've managed to keep it under control, and haven't gotten into it with anyone. But you know those videos of a woman going off irrationally on someone over something trivial? That could be me! I remember when my mom would get so mad sometimes. You know, talking through clenched teeth? I remember avoiding her for quite some time. I believe she was around my age. Could HRT help with that?

I'm absolutely thrilled that women are talking about this! I never heard a word about it from any of the older women in my life but my daughters, younger friends and coworkers are getting an earful from me! I read a few books and so much online before going to the doctor so I could have a knowledgeable conversation with her about the options. I'm 56 and still having mostly regular periods (!) while having hot flashes, acne, joint pain, and the most irrational anger. And the weight gain! I've been on HRT for a couple of months now and I may need to up the dose but, I do see some improvements. Seriously, being a woman is not for the weak!

My hot flashes/night sweats were erratic here and there at first. But the irritability? DH and DS are lucky to still be alive.
But two years ago the hot flashes started becoming more regular. And irritability died down. But periods, while still pretty much every 28 days, were becoming way heavier than I'd ever seen. Like box of 40 tampons in a week heavy. So last July (2023) I had a naturopath appointment. Discussed all that was going on. Started some supplements to help. And they got worse (she said I'd hate her then love her) but went away. Then we moved on to stage 2, and then 3, and they came back with a vengeance. Her suggestion was bloodwork and a visit to an obgyn - both of which I did.
I'm now on HRT and NO MORE flashes! They went away - it has been a lifesaver for me. I wasn't sleeping, was either on fire or frozen from being damp/clammy all the time. It was awful.
I made it to day 284 with no period, then bam, 7 day period. But it wasn't overly heavy so ok. But the clock started over to get to that magical one year. Then bam, 16 days later I've gotten another one.
Make it stop!! LOL
ETA - I have an old shoulder injury that flares every once in a while for a day. But it's been flaring for over a month. I think I'm dealing with frozen shoulder. I have movement but at night it is really achey. Going to Osteopath and massage therapy is helping!

My transition from menstruating to not menstruating was relatively uneventful. I had some hot flashes which responded to gabapentin. Now in the post menopausal world, my body and joints are very stiff. I find using collagen helps immensely for that.

Turned 52 in September. Just hit my full 365 days without period a few days ago. Before that I only had 2 periods in two years (it was always like in the 11th month) I had tubes tied an ablation in my mid 30's never had kids.
The hot flashes and night sweats and zero libido are my biggest gripes right now. I really DO NOT want to take hormones, but I really need to talk to my Dr about it. I haven't had a pap since before covid (I've never had an irregular one either)
It sucks, but I just try to deal with it

I'm going to write a book about it all. It's something no one ever talked about when I was growing up. They still don't. I only have hot flashes and mood swings to go by, since I had a hysterectomy at 39. People seem to be talking more about it recently but always from the standpoint of could this be a symptom kind of thing. And I've got nothing at this point to complain about. And because people have been making much more noise about it I feel like maybe I'm not even in the thick of it yet and something else is going on kwim? I'm in menopause and I get a little warm once in awhile and maybe once a month have a mild hot flash. That is the extent of my symptoms. I'm bipolar and I haven't noticed any problems with my mental health, either. Menopause has been pretty much a non-event but boy, I love not having to deal with periods. When I was in perimenopause my periods were like crime scenes. I'd have to set an alarm every two hours when I slept to change my tampons. It was crazy. My doctor put me on birth control pills and that cleared it up a bit. I never kept track of my periods so I don't know how much time went between them before I got on the pill. I also don't know when my periods finally stopped- I'm guessing 5 years ago but I don't know for sure. I'm 58.

I don't have any experience with going thru it as mine is medically induced, but I've been doing as much research on it as I can to help with side effects. There are some good things on social media now too, Dr. Mary Claire Haver is ringing bells. The idea is that with gen x going thru it there is more discussion and more being demanded of healthcare regarding menopause. The alarming thing is the lack of study, funding, or training for doctors. A lot of the advice is somewhat anecdotal because there just isn't the studies on women to support it. Also highly recommend pelvic floor therapy for anyone with those issues, and "just do kegels" is actually not always the right advice.
eta: There's a documentary that was just on PBS called "The M Factor" with lots of info also.

Here is an odd one for you. I had stopped having periods and about 15 years later was making my first trip to Europe. We were having some trouble with the trip (lodging? train schedule?) and I began to bleed, like break through bleeding. It was an ordeal to find products in a foreign language etc. Came home and everything stopped and never had another bit of trouble.
I was foolish for not contacting my physician when I got home, but it all worked out.

I do remember freezing, putting on my warm fleece pj bottoms - putting on my warm fleece pj top. Immediately burning up, taking off my warm fleece pj top - taking off my warm fleece pg bottoms. One continuous movement. This is me at night, except it's throw the covers off, pull the covers up. Throw the covers off, pull the covers up. All night long. I take a supplement called Brevail (amazon) for hot flashes and it's made them almost go away. I had regular periods with a few gaps until I just...didn't..Last one was in June 2023. The weight gain? THAT is a problem.

I’m 51 and I’d say I’ve been peri menopause for like 5 years. My periods feel like they have basically stopped.
My only symptom other than irregular periods has been hot flashes, which aren’t too bad and are mostly at night. Oh I also wake up at night more often and in general feel like I need less sleep.

The only meds I'm on is Ozempic and a blood pressure med which I can't remember the name of at the moment. And I started both of those beginning of Oct. I've been raging for a good part of the year, but it's gotten worse since end of Summer. No mood drugs, not even weed. Which I'd try but so far the gummies I've tried have given me anxiety. Not smoking it because I value my lungs. I've done enough damage to them from regular cigarettes over the years. So not really sure what to do. I guess be glad I don't own a gun? Because road rage is all just another "fun" aspect of it!

It might be why we don't feel these big mood swings. If it is plaguing you that badly, I would talk to your doctor about it. I would be that way without the meds. They help. It might be an option for you.

I'm hot all the time, too. Our ceiling fans are getting a workout. My HRT doctor says that testosterone is the hormone that regulates body temperature, so maybe I'd be really dying without it. Hot flashes are estrogen. I haven't had any more hot flashes since I started estrogen, but I'm still having night sweats sometimes.

I got my uterus out 7 years ago but kept my ovaries so no menopause then. I’ve noticed changes in the past year and my doctor confirmed it. Since my mom had breast cancer and we don’t know if I have the brca gene, she didn’t want to go the traditional hrt route. My insurance won’t pay for the creme so I get a vaginal estrodial pill. It seems to be helping as my symptoms are much less now. But I still have the occasional outburst mood swing.
