I know, I know. Another KitchenAid mixer thread.
I think this one is a little different. Or at least I couldn’t find anything when I did a search.
I have a 5 quart tilt head KitchenAid mixer. It’s several years old. A while back, I noticed that there was a chunk of glass that had broken off from the rim of my clear glass bowl. I don’t use my mixer a lot, so I’m unsure when it happened or how, however, with the baking season upon us, I’ve been looking at my options for replacing the bowl.
While searching for a replacement bowl, I was surprised to find that there are now ceramic options, in addition to the standard glass bowl and the metal bowls.
I have a Candy Apple Red 5 qt tilt head and was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of ceramic bowls with such pretty patterns. They are very tempting. I think on this mixer and my previous 6 quart Lift Bowl KitchenAid, I’ve always had the clear glass bowls. I would think that the clear glass would be somewhat of an advantage because you can see if everything is thoroughly mixed.
What type of bowl do you have on your KitchenAid mixer? Clear glass, metal or ceramic? Do you like what you have? Are there advantages or disadvantages I should be aware of before purchasing?
As I mentioned, I think an advantage of the clear glass is being able to see the mixing as it happens. Also, the clear glass replacement is a much lower price point.
Your thoughts, please.

I have metal because that’s what it came with. I think I’d like clear glass better for the reason you mentioned. I’m going to investigate that.

Oh thank you! My search skills are apparently sadly lacking. I do love getting everyone’s different perspectives. It really helps.

I have a 6 quart and have the metal one it came with. I would love a glass one for the reason you mentioned. But have found it harder to come by, at least locally, for the 6 quart. I love all the different options that the 5 qt has for bowls. It does seem more limited for the 6 quart. I am loving all the cute ceramic ones I have been seeing lately.

I have two metal bowls, they are lightweight ,unbreakable and easy to clean. They are not sexy, but they are damn efficient and that’s what I care about.

It might have been me that said it. The glass bowl looks nice, but it is heavy once you have something in it. I'm looking to switch to metal.

I have metal and no desire to switch. I don't want to worry about chips or breaks. I have watched too many cooking shows where the glass ones have broken. That and the weight don't make them at all desirable to me.

I don’t think there were other options when I bought mine but I could be wrong. And I have a second metal one to use as needed (if the other one has dough in the fridge or dirty).

I don't have a kitchenaid - just a vintage Oster Kitchen Centre - but I have glass bowls for it in two sizes. They are on the heavy side but very sturdy and I do like being able to see what's going on.

My Kitchaid is 34 years old and still going strong. I have the original metal bowl and it’s been perfect. Light weight and it’s also lasted the 34 years.

I have a 6 qt bowl lift from Costco that came with a metal bowl, and I added a second 7 qt metal bowl because it also fits but less stuff flies out the top when I’m using it. FYI if you have this mixer, the 8 qt bowl also fits!

My Artisan tilt head came with a metal bowl about 15 years ago and that's what I still use. Never have to worry about it chipping or breaking and it isn't heavy when filled with batter. Before that I had an old Sunbeam mixer with glass bowls in 2 sizes. They were really heavy and difficult to manage, especially when full of batter. Doesn't matter if I can see the batter better if I can't lift the bowl easily.

Clear glass and the regular metal one are my work horses. I also have the quilted/argyle looking metal one which I leave on the mixer for aesthetics (and also use if I’m doing multiple batches/more then one bowl per recipe).

I've been debating on upgrading to a bowl lift and this is another pro for the increased price and having to rebuy/source a lot of my accessories (bowls, lids, mixer attachments/paddles) that I've accumulated over the years for my tilt head.

Well….SNAP! I also have a candy apple red 5 mixer! I like the glass bowl best for the reasons you stated and also because if the recipe calls for melted butter I can melt in the microwave in the mixer bowl. I have had to replace twice in the 12 years I’ve had it because of breakages and I would get another glass tomorrow if I had to

IIRC the attachments between the tilt head and bowl lift aren’t interchangeable. I have a 4.5 qt tilt head too and none of the attachments for that will work with the bowl lift. The 6 qt bowl lift from Costco is on sale right now for I think $299 and it comes with the paddle, whisk, flex edge beater, dough hook and pouring shield. I hate only having one bowl though, and hated how everything would come up out of the top of the 6 qt bowl when making a double batch of cookies so I was really pleased to learn the 7 and 8 qt bowls also fit that machine. The one thing I don’t like is that there is no stainless steel paddle for it even as an accessory option. I don’t like the painted ones at all, and it’s hard to determine if an aftermarket stainless one will fit.

The ceramic bowls are so pretty, but I absolutely do not trust my clumsy self let alone multiple other bakers in the house. Stainless it is.

I saw it and thought the same thing. I try to minimize the things I have to wash by hand because I have enough of that already. Did you look at the care instructions for it? 🤪 They recommend oiling it after every use. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

But knowing that I could get different sized bowls to use on the bowl lift is a big plus. I made over a thousand Xmas cookies each year and at least 2 bowls is a must. Also how I killed my motor with too much thick cookie dough for doing 2-3 batches at a time.

That color was pretty popular a decade ago. Honestly, it still looks like the day I bought it. It's a work horse for sure.

Our original KA came with a glass bowl. For me, it was heavy. We now have two metal bowls.

I have an old tilt-head and the OG metal bowl it came with. When we renovated our kitchen, I briefly toyed with the idea of upgrading the mixer, but my contractor shared the adage that they don't build them like they used to and I decided to stick with what I got.
But I did glow up slightly by buying a copper bowl which I love.

Some very good pros and cons of each type of bowl were brought up. Thank you!
Out of idle curiosity, I decided to weigh the glass mixing bowl that came with my 5 qt KA Mixer. It weighs 4 lb 9 oz. EMPTY! My goodness. I still have a lot of research to do before I purchase (hoping for a black Friday deal), but the weight of the bowl when empty was not something I had even thought about until now.
Thanks for the replies and real kitchen use experiences.

I'm not sure if there are lids that fit on the glass and ceramic bowls but I know that the lid that fits on the metal bowl doesn't fit on the glass bowl that I have.
