Target's stock took a big dip yesterday based on their earnings forecast. It got me wondering where everyone shops and why.
I shop far more at Walmart. I might go to Target 3 or 4 times a year. There are two main reasons. There is only one Target store anywhere close to me. There are at least 7 Walmart stores as close or closer including the food only ones.
Even if there were an abundance of Target stores, there is another significant reason why I might go to Walmart instead. If all the Targets were laid out like the one close to me, I would still go to Walmart. There is only one entrance at Target and it is on one end of the large store - the opposite end to groceries. Most of the time when I go to Walmart, I getting something at the grocery section, usually it is the main reason I'm there. I do not want to walk clear across the store and back again just to get a gallon of milk or one or two other items.
I do find the employees at Target very helpful. The store is clean and well organized. It just takes longer to get there, get in and out.

The closest Target is an hour away and Walmart is only 20 minutes away! Target was supposed to put a store in North Platte, but it never panned out. So, Walmart it is!

I despise the Walmart shopping experience, but they have more stuff.

I said neither because although I have both stores, I step foot in each of them maybe once or twice a year. Michigan has a grocery super store chain, Meijer. I know they have them in Indiana and Ohio too. But Meijer is comparable to Walmart. My husband shops there for his groceries, I shop a huge indoor farmer's market for mine. He can get stuff like shampoo, razors, toilet paper at his store so that's what he does. My market has nearly every kind of food item you need *if* you cook from scratch.
I do not buy a lot of other random things because we tend more toward a low consumption household.

We shop at WM bc we also want to buy some household goods, such as TP, shampoo, conditioner, etc, and those are WAY more expensive at grocery-only stores, such as Giant, Aldi, etc. I recently got a free trial for 6 months for Walmart+ which allows us to use the scan and go feature, so we scan and bag our stuff as we shop, and then I scan the register and pay with my (loaded) credit card all thru the app. It is SO much faster now, and they changed all the self checkouts to these tiny kioscks (no more belts) so it was really hard to check out. Our Target has a tiny grocery store part, so I don't shop there for my food, and I find I will spend more money on stuff if I go there. Their app really pissed me off long ago with the coupons/circle thing, so I just rarely shop there. WM prices are way better than grocery stores (except for maybe Weis/Food Lion or Aldi), but our one FL is so damn crowded, Weis is not convienent to me, and Aldi stocks on Wed, and we shop on weekends, so sometimes stuff is gone when I go. I typically (and want to) only make one stop, which makes WM the top choice for grocery shopping for us... which I do hate bc they donate to trump, but I'm in a rural area and my time is money too.

I shop Aldi for most of our groceries and get the rest at Meijer (Midwest Walmart). Target is a fun treat store that I like to wander to buy non-food-related things. I recently bought my cousin & me Dolly Christmas mugs online from Walmart but otherwise, I haven't shopped at Walmart in several months. It's always dirty & smells like weed + my husband's debit card has been compromised there at least twice in the last 3 or 4 years.

I like Target better, but Walmart is closer... That said, I don't really go that often, maybe once every few months, if that.

Target for sure.
I know for a fact that the last time I stepped foot into a Walmart was in 2015, because I wanted a specific physical gift card for a themed gift I was giving for a special event, and the recipient was very much a Walmart shopper.
Since then, I have shopped from their website an average of once per year, always at Christmas, and only for items I simply couldn't find elsewhere.

They sell clothing and shoes and sporting goods and books and electronics and toys. It is not grocery only and the prices are not higher.

I shop at Target now and then, and I really like the store. The only Walmart near me is a dump. It’s not a superstore and has two aisles of shelf stable groceries (crackers, cereal, cookies…) There’s always tons of product thrown on the floor and it’s dirty. I avoid it like the plague — only reason I would go in there was when my mom would ask me to pick up something specific. It was next door to her apartment complex.
Now that she’s gone, I don’t ever have to go there again.

I picked neither.
We got a smaller Target here in 2018 (first and only Target in VT) and I have been in it probably 3 times.
We have a smaller Walmart that I absolutely hate, and only go when absolutely necessary (I would guess less than a 3 or 4 times a year). Although there is a bigger and much nicer Walmart about 30 minutes away from me, closer to the Canadian border. I have bought my new car from a dealership literally right across the road from it, so I assume that I will go there more when I have to bring my car up for service. If that was closer to me I might go more often but probably not. 😆

I live within a couple miles of both. I used to shop at Walmart for my laundry/household supplies but Target carries Persil now, so I usually buy it there. I don't step foot in either store though, so I use Target's curbside because they don't require a set time.

I prefer Target for most things but lately I shop almost exclusively at Walmart. That's simply because I live 2 blocks from one and curbside pickup is so easy. Either Target (I have 3 nearby) are at least a 10 min. drive for me.

Target, simply because there is no Walmart near me. I mean yes, I could drive to one...I just googled and the closest it about 7 miles away in DC. There is NO way I'm driving into DC to go shopping at any store so that's a nope. The next closest is about 8 miles in another town in Northern Virginia. I would do that if I had a very good reason to, but there are several Targets much closer than that. My favorite Target -- favorite because of the abundant free parking -- is only 3 miles. And there's a smaller Target 1.3 miles away which I can even walk to if I wanted to. So, no Walmart shopping.

I like Target bit only go a few times a year. Walmart's prices for non-food items just can't be beat so it's hard to go anywhere else.

I hate shopping at Walmart anyway, but it’s also an easy decision to go to Target because I have two Targets close by and would have to drive past a third one to get to the Walmart—it is in a suburb and is pretty far from me.
I used to be at Target at least weekly, but, since all of these stores started locking up a lot of things, I order online.

I think they hold purchases for 2 or 3 days until you are ready to pick up.

Target only, and almost always curbside. I dislike Walmart.
I do have to wonder if curbside has hurt their sales. It used to be the place I’d make the most impulse purchases (Target tells you what you need), but since I rarely go into the store, those purchases don’t happen. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

This needs an Oprah selection.
Do not shop at WM. I do not support the companies ideas or who they support as well as poor business practices.
I hardly shop Target. It used to be my go to. Once it was remodeled and now 80% of the store (including toys) being locked up, I bounced.
The employees are slow and rude. The lighting bothers me. It's white and bright. The layout makes zero sense. And cost wise it has gone up.
IF I need to get something there I use curbside so I don't have to stand in 1 or 2 open lines that is wrapped around the store.
I get most items at Costco. The exceptions are shampoo and conditioner (they stopped selling the Pantene that is safe for DD and I), shampoo for dh, dh's body wash, and shave gel for DD.
If it isn't at Costco, I get it at Stater Bros or Albertson's. But if Target has it on sale, I order there.
I also moved my prescriptions from the CVS in Target to another one. They reduced hours and never had meds we needed. And became very slow.
Ours is a super with 2 entrances. Is supposed to have persons at all areas of locked items but don't. They have also sucked at restocking. Carts in your way and empty shelving.
For a good year I have wondered if Target will make it.
Oh and both are equally distanced from me.

I cannot support Walmart or their business practices. Target for me. I boycotted Walmart for a while after I got let go because of it but I shop there a lot now. There are 5 in my county and each are within 10 miles of me. 2 are neighborhood markets. I prefer Target. Much cleaner and staffed better. I rarely get to one since there isn't one in my town. I do order online a lot though.

I picked Target even though I can't remember the last time I was in a physical store. I really hate Walmart with a passion and would probably seek out other shopping if it was my only option.
I do curbside pickup for all of my grocery/household items except for TJs. I also order a lot on Amazon as they have their subscribe and save pricing.

I live within an easily drivable “zone” of many food/toiletries/clothing stores. Two Krogers, a Meijers, a Walmart Super Center, a Target, an Aldi’s, a Trader Joe’s and The Fresh Market. If I go by myself, I mostly shop at what we call the little Kroger. It’s something like a minute and a half, two minute drive from my house. (There is also a cvs and Walgreens on the corners). If my husband is driving, we will go to the larger Kroger or Meijers. We occasionally go down to the Walmart because of the pet food. But never shop there for clothes or toiletries. We will pick up the occasional groceries when we’re in there. It’s a little further down the road and the traffic is pretty bad down that way. I am a member of Walmart +. It only cost $49 a year and includes Paramount+. I like that can get groceries delivered if it’s over $35 from my local store and I can get two or three day free shipping on other things.
So, the bulk of our groceries are purchased Krogers and Meijers. Toiletries are the best price at Meijers. It’s not too far away and it’s a very nice clean store.
ETA - All of the stores I mentioned are clean, neat and well stocked.

Both Target and Walmart stores near me are large and clean. I usually choose Walmart because I guess that I’m just used to shopping there. Although, I get most of my groceries from HEB.
I should choose Target more because my dil works for them at a different location. Target is funding her college education 100%.
eta ~ oops. Not my dil. My grandson’s wife. 😊

I chose target but I rarely go. I don’t remember the last time I went to a Walmart. We have more targets around. I don’t buy groceries there, though. I only go to target for something specific - and I would much rather buy it on Amazon and save a trip to the store so it’s only a handful of times a year. The target I go to (if I do) is across the street from Costco (where I shop every other week). They usually have one cashier and then a lonnnng line for the 4 self check registers. So I have to really want something to go here and then wait in the line.
