Looking back on my 20+ years of scrapbooking, I can remember some weird trends.
For icons, I think mustaches had to have been the weirdest. Bizarre.
For scrapbook products, I think smashed bottle caps were really weird. I also think Magic Mesh (drywall tape) was pretty weird.
I saw zippers once sold as scrapbook embellishments but that wasn't really a trend. But bottle caps and Magic Mesh were everywhere for awhile.
What do you remember that seemed odd at the time, or as you look back?

Chandeliers Making Memories had this one metal chain and hook embellishment that I bought and NEVER remember (or can find an image now) of anyone ever using it. Junkitz had a lot of weird stuff. Mesh ribbon with a burlap feel to it.

The whole office supply thing—stapling, paper clips, memo pads, labels from those old label makers with a trigger, typed journaling. Never got that.
Doodling reminded me of middle school folders. Plus I thought it was messy looking.

I used moustaches on a layout about DS in his Super Mario costume when he was four. I don't think I used them again.
I once saw a layout in a magazine where the scrapper had used pencils (real ones) on the page as a border.

I think it's the old cutting photos into shapes. I have a friend that still does it. I try not to judge, but it makes me cringe!

I loved bottlecaps. 😂 I still have a few.
Metal embellishments in general were so trendy. All those Making Memories lines.
A trend I remember popping up in 2peas was using Tyvec and melting it. Does anyone remember that? There was a lady on the publishing board who was really hyping it and even sending sheets of it out to people who asked for it. She swore it was going to be the Next Big Thing. When she ran out of samples to send out she encouraged people to cut up tyvec mailers to practice for when this product hit the mainstream market. 🤪

Tear Bears.
Paint chip samples. And yes I used them. I'd have dh take me to Home Depot to get some.
The paper doll like kid characters. You could get one for everything from broken bone to lost tooth to first day of school to careers.
A tiny photo surrounded by embellishments. Modern sticker sneeze.
Shaped edge scissors.
Cutting your photo out using a template in a star or heart or oval then using a bigger one to cut the background paper.
Do you remember cutting slits in the page protector so you could stick things out like a photo cascade??
Metal hinges. Well I guess metal everything. I used metal circle letters to make a title, the metal bars, the metal shapes.
Bathroom people icons. 😂
Having to remove a page so you could interact with it

I loved some of those things! Like the potty people!! I used some magic mesh once or twice. The tear bear craze on eBay…BANANAS!! People went wild!

Bread tags, guitar picks, washers, sewing on pages (still popular, but I still don't get it), zippers, hinges, photo turns, big bubble letters. To each her/his own, I guess.

Ugh, I hated that every single masculine kit had moustaches in them! It was so overdone. I don't think I have ever used one. Although.... I can see myself using a moustache embellishment when I get around to scrapping DSO's Movember photos. Maybe I'll add 'moustache' to the next round of team challenges! Bottle caps were also very popular in digital kits, I have heaps of them. The whole office supply thing—stapling, paper clips, memo pads, labels from those old label makers with a trigger, typed journaling. Never got that. Doodling reminded me of middle school folders. Plus I thought it was messy looking. I loved using staples when I was a paper scrapper. I remember buying a pack of multi coloured staples that I used a lot! I still use staples quite often in digital scrapping. I also use a typewriter font on a lot of my pages, although not the really messy typewriter fonts - I'm not such a fan of them. And I was just going through my 'stash' of Photoshop styles and actions, and found the "Doodle" action, and had a bit of a play around with it. Don't be surprised if you see some doodling on one of my upcoming pages.

sewing on pages (still popular, but I still don't get it)..... To each her/his own, I guess. Stitching is probably my favourite thing to do on my pages! I loved it when I was a paper scrapper, and I love using digital stitching now. I have a ton of pre-made digital stitches, and also styles/actions/brushes to make my own stitching in any shape I want.

Moustaches were definitely a weird moment, as were chandeliers. I agree with whoever mentioned Junkitz, they had some cool stuff, but also some really strange embellishments. Bread tags I'd completely forgotten about even though I know I had and used some.
There was so much metal in the early days of my scrapping, I remember the MM frames and photo corners particularly.
I also remember that twistel(?) ribbon that you'd have to painstakingly unwind before you could put it on a page.

Not a scrapbook product, but when the secret Garden Girl board and all it's drama and heinous talk, was exposed for all to see.... Shannon Tidwell (and someone named Jen) with her-their "game on bitches" comment and pea owner Kristina and others....talking about various message board members..... that was weird, shocking, and awful behavior on their part. In Shannon Tidwell's case, that one comment in writing.....speaks volumes in regards to the type of "mean girl" person she really is.

The whole office supply thing—stapling, paper clips, memo pads, labels from those old label makers with a trigger, typed journaling. Never got that. When I cleaned out one of my drawers recently, I rediscovered my Dymo label maker, and it still works perfectly. I think I'm going to use it! It would add a finishing touch to a pocket card or photo. I remember getting decorative stick pins in some of my old kit clubs. I'm not sure how we were supposed to use them. I was also not a big fan of 3-D decorations that were supposed to dangle from the page.

I never really liked the shiny texture of them on my projects but I recently learned from Vicki P that you can brush over matte medium or rice paper glue to dull that down. I have a font that looks like the labels that I use in my photo books.

I could never get my head around bulky embellishments. Flair buttons just seemed so thick to me! The protection of the photos was always my priority and having thick uneven pages just didn't make sense to me. But like all this stuff, to each their own

I had a ton of metal embellishments nd have destashed most of them. I never got bottle caps thank goodness although I do have some old Tim Holtz papers with pics of them I didn’t mind dry wall tape but the brand name magic mesh was so expensive . In the end I purchased a stamp with a pic of mesh and I still really like it as a background element . I also could never understand bulldog clips or decorative staples. I still have a hard time with staples although of course I do have a tiny attacher and enough refills for a lifetime 🤣

I do hand sewing pages and I'd love to do machine stitching but my sewing machine is at my sister's and I'm too lazy to get it and buy a separate needle.
I still like paper clips and staples. I also like metal, too. I keep forgetting to get my old Making Memories stuff out- I still like some of it.
Junkitz did have weird stuff. I think they were the ones that had the zippers.
I never got the straight pin thing. I didn't want my pages to be dangerous.

But like all this stuff, to each their own Most of my flair started turning brown before I could use it. I prefer Pinkfresh chipboard flair better, it's flatter and not made of metal.

When I read the thread title, bottle caps was the first thing that came to mind.
I saw paint chips mentioned and that made me laugh. I still have a gajillion of those and I still keep them when we are actually looking at paint colors. I only take the samples I need though!
Chandeliers were weird and it seems like mushrooms have been around a few times. I like to eat mushrooms but not sure how often I actually need them as embellishments.

While I recall weird past trends, I never participated in them so have no lingering products in my inventory (e.g. mustaches, unicorns, mermaids, zebras, tigers, llamas, sloths, flamingo, cacti, decorative clothespins/paperclips, emojis, chandeliers, tacos, doughnuts, pineapples, homemade paper, metal embellishments, tear bears, melted Perler beads/DIY enamel dots). Personally, I look forward to the current (for at least a couple years now) trend of floral oversaturation & odd yellows in collections to end, so I can resume purchasing/using unadorned & usable supplies!

When scrapbookers were using wire for everything, titles made out of wire, etc. One of my friends used them in a baby album (personally I didn't think wire went with baby pictures but that was during the metal in scrapbooks phase) and that album got published in a scrapbook magazine. She admitted to me later that the wire was cutting into some of the opposite pages that it rubbed against and she ended up taking the pictures out and remaking an album without wire. Back then it seemed like people would do anything to try to be unique in order to get published.

I actually did use a few of those mustaches, but I certainly could have lived without them, and still have far too many left. Although my one son is sporting a new mustache now, so maybe it's time to use those leftovers. I found the bottlecaps difficult to use, as were the fairly heavy metal elements out by Making Memories and a few other companies for awhile. I used some of them for non-scrapbooking crafts because to put them on a page often made the page and album more unwieldly in general. One thing I never used were the restroom men/women icons. I just personally couldn't see them and think anything other than restrooms, and I didn't feel the need to bring that idea to mind on a page about anything else. I do have some bathroom reno pics somewhere, so I will definitely bring those stickers/papers out for that!

I also felt moustaches were a weird trend. I am not at all a literal scrapbooker and could not find a way to use them. While I wasn't wild about chandeliers, I can think of ways to make them work.
Paint chip cards - I totally see how they work with scrapbooking but I thought it was shitty some people would take them by the handful from paint & hardware stores just to use for layouts. There was some other item that people were ordering samples of - paneling or veneer flooring chips or something. I don't remember exactly but someone on LM posted about it and it got so bad the company reached out to the LM owners about all these requests coming from a link on their message board. I guess this falls more into the "not cool" category than weird.
Yes, bottlecaps were too bulky. Those pin badges were a thing too. I found them hard to use. Something needed to be done with the pin part and then I needed a bunch of foam tape to fill in the gap enough so it will stick to the page.
But the biggest challenge for me was naked chipboard. I regret every cent I spent on that stuff. I was completely incapable of turning it to something even remotely nice enough to put on a project. Lots of talented people were able to but I was not one of them...at all. ha!

Mesh ribbon with a burlap feel to it. I’m still holding on to a ton of Webster’s Pages. Man. When chandeliers (which I didn’t like then!) and random doors come back, I’ll be super trendy!

To me, mushrooms are an organic embellishment like flowers or leaves or branches representing nature.

Random animals - flamingos, llamas, sloths, unicorns, etc. Not as weird as the moustaches or chandeliers, granted. I think keys were also big for a while? Or maybe that was just part of the vintage/grunge thing.
I'd agree mushrooms seem pretty normal to me and easy to use with most fall or nature themes.

Maybe I think the mushrooms are weird because I don’t really use flowers or leaves either.
That’s interesting though—I’ll likely look at them a bit differently. I still may not use them, but I’ll have a new appreciation!
