I got a new crock pot and want to make pot roast with veggies. I haven’t made this for many years so was looking for a recipe on Pinterest. I’m seeing some that say to cook 4 hours, some 6, others 8. Does anyone have a good recipe and how long is ideal to cook it? Thanks!

Pot roast should go slow for at least 8 hours. Sometimes 9 depending on size.

We prefer chuck roast (think Costco size). I usually put the roast in the crockpot still pretty frozen. I pour a packet of Au Jus mix and a can of French onion soup over the top and let it cook all day. It always comes out perfect.

This is similar to how I used to make it. www.cookingclassy.com/slow-cooker-pot-roast/#jump-to-recipeI always used thick carrots in good chunks and whole small baby Yukon gold or red potatoes. I never used Worcestershire sauce in mine. But one time mine had to go about 8.5 hours to be fork tender. I always left a little wiggle room.

I would cook it for the least amount of time to get it tender. 10 hours is way too long and results in dry, flavorless roast. (10 hours was the amt of time btw when I left for work and got home in the past). I just make mine on the stove or in the oven on weekends to avoid using the crockpot

It’s probably 4-6 on high, or 8-12ish on low.
I usually cook mine on low overnight for an early afternoon meal, but I have put it in in the morning and eaten around 5ish… If I go that route I usually end up doing a few hours on high before switching to low.
We use a frozen chuck roast, and then dissolve a packet each of ranch dressing mix, Italian dressing mix, and brown gravy mix into a couple of cups of water and pour that over top. It makes an easy, delicious gravy that just needs thickened.

I don't know if there is a difference in cuts of meat but I did buy the chuck roast at Costco. I ended up putting it in at 9:30 before leaving. Used whole baby red and yukon gold potatoes, colorful carrots cut in half. The recipe called for worcestershire but I guess we are out, so I omitted that. So, basically like pantsonfire recipe except the one I used had more spices added. We will see how it goes. I saved the other piece of the roast for a different day and will try Gennifer 's method since that sounds easy.

If you don't have a packet of onion soup on hand, you can google a recipe for a substitute. I make pasta and spaghetti sauce with crusty Italian bread to go with it this. It's awesome!

I would never just make a roast on my own BUT DH likes it and sometimes at Aldi you can find a roast kit with seasonings, meat, and veg all in one fairly inexpensive package.
We sear the meat in the Instant Pot, then add everything in the package to the pot along with a cup of water and a bouillon cube.
I then add some extra seasoning and some cooking wine or red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce. Hit the meat button and it's done in 20 min after coming up to pressure (doesn't take too long since everything is already hot).
I do a quick manual release and voila, roast is done AND it's not dry and even I like it this way.

I have no idea ion the length of time for a pot roast (TBH I don't know what a "pot" roast is, I assume beef). But I do cook a LOT of roast lamb in my slow cooker. I prefer to cook it for as long as possible, up to 8 hours on low, or 6 hours at the least. If I'm cooking it for lunch, and don't have as much time, I will cook it for about 4 hours on high.
The recommended settings are 3-4 hours on high or 6-8 hours on low. Always use low if time allows.
I would NEVER put veggies in with the meat, because I think it's against the law in Australia haha. Just kidding, but people would march through the streets in protest if they didn't get crispy crunchy roast vegetables from the oven with their roast dinner. I daresay the NZ and UK peas would agree with me! The only other things I put in the slow cooker are onions and garlic. I sit the meat on top of the quartered onions to cook, so they go in at the same time as the meat.

I forgot about this recipe! But really the reason I bought the roast was because I needed to use up the potatoes and carrots. Kind of an expensive way to do that, but...

You look absolutely fabulous darling, as always! 😍

I swear new crock pots cook too slow even on high. I cooked a pot roast in high for over 7 hours and it could easily have gone at least another hour. I used to cook on low then an hour or two on high. I guess it’s a good thing I kept my old crock pot.
