While I love originals, I also am a lover of Covers of songs. Obscure and unique renditions get extra bonus points. If anyone ever listened(s) to eTown (syndicated radio show) they always did/do a song at the end with all of the guest and Nick & Helen Forster and the eTones. They all pick the song and it is often the coolest rendition of some random song.
My radio station of choice use to have a weekly spotlight, where they did a set of 2 covers of the same song. I loved it and was sad when they stopped doing it.
So my fluff question to add to a little frivolous fun, if anyone wants to play, is:
What would be your 3 song set of an original version and 2 covers? Alternate question is what are some of your favorite covers?
There are so many to pick from but quickly off the top of my head these 2 songs have a ton of covers and some of the best…too many to list. Some are so cool and unique.
Original - Dead Flowers by The Rolling Stones Cover 1 - a live Steve Earle rendition where Bruce Springsteen make a surprise appearance Cover 2 - A Grace Potter version recorded during a live pandemic music cast from her house
Original - Angel from Montgomery by John Prine Cover 1 - Bonnie Raitt (Although Tedeschi Trucks band would also be a choice) Cover 2 - Ben Harper and Tom Freund

I'm generally not a fan of cover versions but I do enjoy David Gray's cover of Say Hello, Wave Goodbye.

The obvious one to me is Fast Car, originally written and performed by Tracy Chapman, with an amazing cover by Luke Combs.
Another favorite for me is Hand in My Pocket by Alanis Morisette, covered by Imagine Dragons.

Original “For No One” by The Beatles, cover by Emmy Lou Harris.
Edit to agree with “Fast Car” Luke Combs cover…

My potentially unpopular opinion is that I like The Chicks' cover of Landslide better than the Stevie Nicks original. With all due respect to Queen Stevie.
Worst cover? Morgan Wallen's soulless rendition of "Cover Me Up" by Jason Isbell. No one but Jason should ever sing that song IMO.

When I read your title I could only think of the bad versions played at my gym! Good suggestions here, Angel from Montgomery is one of my favorites. Ill have to think and listen for more.

Sound of Silence Simon and Garfunkel Cover done by Disturbed. This is one that I immediately think of. Another is Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. I like hearing KD Lang sing it. Killing me Softly - Roberta Flack. I also like the Fugees version.

Yes, k.d. lang singing Hallelujah is wonderful.
I only like Miley Cyrus' version of Dolly Parton's Jolene.

The obvious one to me is Fast Car, originally written and performed by Tracy Chapman, with an amazing cover by Luke Combs. I think it is not a good cover because it is exactly like Tracy Chapman. I can't even tell the difference until a verse in, because their voices are so similar, too. The song is beautiful, but I hate that they sound the same. To me, a good cover version has to be totally different than the original version. Good ones to me: Sound of Silence- Simon & Garfunkel, and then the one by Disturbed- totally different feel Angie - Rolling Stones, and then by Tori Amos Billie Jean - Michael Jackson, and then by Chris Cornell. Probably my favorite cover of a song, ever. Bad Company - Bad Company, and then Five Finger Death Punch Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen, and then Jeff Buckley, and also k.d. lang. Definitely not Pentatonix- how they managed to take the soul out of a soulful song is horrifying. Hurt - Nine Inch Nails, and then by Johnny Cash. Tainted Love - Gloria Jones, and then Soft Cell, and then by Marilyn Manson Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears, and then Lorde A Change is Going to Come - Sam Cook, and then Greta Van Fleet. I guess I like when the cover reinterprets the song and I seem to favor the cover having a harder edge.

This is a great one. I do like Luke Combs’ version a lot. IMO, Passenger and the Black Pumas also do a cool version.
This song has a special meaning to me and I also love The Chicks version.
This is one of my favorite songs. I could give a ton of versions I love…Bonnie and John, Bonnie and Brandi Carlile, John Denver, John Mayer, Bonnie and Alison Krauss, Grace Potter, and the list goes on and on. 😄
I really like her version. I am not typically a big Miley listener but she does surprise me at times. I absolutely loved her version of Tom Petty’s Wildflowers with her father as her tribute to him when he passed away.
An other random cover I like is Chris Cornell’s Patience (Guns N Roses).
Thanks for all the great replies so far.

Popping back in to say (not that anyone asked!) I think the Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence is absolutely awful and illustrates perfectly why I dislike covers so much.

I don’t have a particular favorite cover song but one thing I really like to do is listen to cover song playlists on Spotify. It’s nice background music at home for me- it’s familiar music but with a twist instead of listening to the same thing all the time . I do especially like ones that totally mix it up.

Ring of Fire, by Johnny Cash Remade by Wall of Voodoo. I know there are a lot of remakes of this song, but this one is by far my favorite. The remake has a sinister sound.

Popping back in to say (not that anyone asked!) I think the Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence is absolutely awful and illustrates perfectly why I dislike covers so much. I love that cover. It went from sad (Simon & Garfunkel) to very, very angry. Both get me in the feels- so much emotion and poignancy in both but I just love the anger in the Disturbed cover. I really feel the sadness and rage. Rage and sorrow really speaks to me, though. That is why both versions of “Hurt” hit so hard.

Siouxsie and the Banshees have an album of covers that I just love--Through The Looking Glass (1987).
Their version of the Beatles' Dear Prudence is really lovely. And for the longest time I tried to figure out where I knew "Trust In Me" (there was no googling it back then, lol). I finally realized it was Kaa the snake's song to Mowgli in The Jungle Book. Masterful.

There’s a male singer from Australia ( I can’t think of his name and Google isn’t being helpful right now) who does an acoustic guitar version of Sam Brown’s Stop that is phenomenal.

My favourite would be Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt (Nine Inch Nails original). I love all versions of All Along the Watchtower - Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, U2. And Cold Chisel's live version of Knocking On Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan), as well as the Guns 'N Roses version. I'm generally not a fan of cover versions but I do enjoy David Gray's cover of Say Hello, Wave Goodbye. Okay, I had no idea that David Gray's version was a cover! I just asked DSO (who 'introduced' me to David Gray) if he knew, but he had no idea either. I had to google to find that Soft Cell did the original. And speaking of Soft Cell, I love their cover version of Tainted Love. There’s a male singer from Australia ( I can’t think of his name and Google isn’t being helpful right now) who does an acoustic guitar version of Sam Brown’s Stop that is phenomenal. Paul Dempsey, from Something for Kate, did a version years ago. Not sure if that's the one you're talking about. And co-incidentally, I saw him perform at a music festival two weeks ago - he didn't sing that song though!

I'm going to listen to it.
