I have been having heartburn lately. A lot. My Doctor is out of town until next week. no one covering. The answering service says go to ER or Urgent care and this isn't something that warrants either.
I was going to go to CVS and get something OTC. I already have TUMS, but was going to go for Nexium or Prilosec or something else?
ANy suggestions on what would be better and why??

Does your insurance have a nurse line? Mine does and I've called when I've had questions and have gotten some good advice.

I take Zantac 175. It does work. Zantac works immediately. Nexium and Prosilex are to be taken before you eat and work "long term."

Zantac will give you more immediate relief than Prilosec. I have ridiculous reflux and take Protonix (prescription strength Prilosec). If I forget to take my meds and have issues, I will take a Zantac to tide me over until the Protonix kicks in, but Zantac doesn't fully control my reflux.

I take prilosec twice daily; it's meant to turn off the cells or whatever in your stomach produce stomach acid so that you have less to reflux. When I asked about what I should take if I had instances of "breakthrough" heartburn pain, my doctor said I could use Zantac.

I also sleep with my head elevated with a wedge pillow.

Thanks to all of you. I had no idea what the difference was. They don't make it clear or at least *I* didn't get the difference.
I appreciate all your help!

I will have to have Zantac here in case I need it. I take Pepcid Complete and it helps. But sometimes I get it so bad that nothing works! I always take Pepcid complete before bed when I am out of town. It's bad enough to have heartburn, but at someone else's house where I couldn't get up and go watch tv when I can't sleep.
Does zantac work after you get the heartburn, or does it have to be taken before you eat dinner?
I once was so desperate I drank a little water with baking soda. My grandfather used to do that when I was little. It did help! But I don't know if it's too safe.

One of the OTC drugs has like a 2 week pack. I would take them for 2 weeks and then see how you do for a few days before calling the dr. A few times I have had some heartburn issues and usually if I take the stuff 1x a day for 2 weeks, I am good for a long time. I think sometimes my stomach / system gets messed up ( especially this time of yr) from eating too much JUNK!

Depends on the root cause. Most of mine, Tums works the fastest. I used to use MOM, and if I've been sick, "Pepto Bismol." I am still leery of the newer meds because of side effects that others have had. What REALLY WORKS, no big meals after 6pm, limit anything with fats (even the good kind), and do not lay down for at least 4-5 hour after eating a full meal.

Prilosec is one you take to prevent heartburn, so you'd need to take it for several days.
Just pay attention to your body, because this can be a symptom of heart attack in women. My doctor had me do a stress test to be certain it was not a cardiac issue.
