I don't wear gold jewelry anymore so I was going through an old jewelry box to see if there was anything worthwhile I could take to jeweler. I found a couple of necklaces, a ring and this pocket watch. My mom had given it to me, I knew it was old and it was my grandma's. It was pretty but I thought what am I going to do with it and if it was worth some money, then why not trade it in. I get to jeweler and he looks at it and opens it!! I didn't realize it opened. It was engraved. It said Russell and Mabel May 6, 1913! That was the day my grandparents got married and this was a gift from my grandpa to my grandma! The jeweler said this really isn't worth much money, do you really want to sell it? With tears in my eyes I said oh no!! This pocket watch is over 101 years old.....and it still works! I had no idea the inside was engraved. What a treasure. I have a wedding picture of my grandparents, I plan on making some type of shadow box with the picture and watch. My mom and dad are both gone now, I wish I could tell my mom thank you for giving such a wonderful gift. I just wish I knew more of the history of the watch. If you guys are fortunate enough to still have your parents, talk to them about their history. There are so many questions I wish I would have asked. I miss them so much. Anyway, here is the watch and wedding picture. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/W4b_Om5roEadLiOzGo_l.jpg) ![](http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/aleekatt/imagejpg1_zpsce5a814c.jpg)

What a find! I missed out on asking my grandparents questions. I wasn't interested in family history then. Every once in a while my Dad or Mom will give us a tidbit of their early years, but mostly they say it was too long ago to remember.

Wow, what a great story! You came so close to losing that piece of family history! I'm glad the jeweler took the time to examine it and open it while you were there. I hope that finding this unexpected treasure will motivate you to find out more about your grandparents.
I've been working on my family history for a long time, and I'm active in a local genealogy society. Wasn't there a group called GenealoPeas on the old board? I was a lurker previously and couldn't join in, but I'd love to participate in that now.

What a treasure you have! I'm so glad the jeweler opened it and you discovered the engraving on it. You'll have to show us the final box you make out of the photo and the watch together.

That is awesome! One thing I really appreciate about my mom is that she labels everything and includes what she knows about the story. She is an engineer and has used her organizational and research skills to do a lot of our family history. It is so detailed! She stores everything electronically and uploads birth certificates, census reports, anything official that she has documented. I just have to show I am related to her, so my research is kind of easy.

How wonderful, so glad you didn't sell it. A shadow box will be beautiful. I am very lucky that my grandfather on my mother's side wrote his family history down with some great anecdotes. I asked my grandma all sorts of questions about her and my grandpa before she passed away, I have notes and things in my head, I need to get on writing them down though. The funniest thing is that both my grandma and grandpa have different versions on how and where they first met! I don't have anything on my father's side though, nothing concrete anyway which is really a shame since my great grandparents moved to Alaska from Norway in the very early 1900's. Anchorage was still a tent town when they moved there. If you have any information about your grandparents you should print it up and somehow incorporate it into the shadow box. I hope you share pictures when you are done!

My grandmother was a very private person who didn't like to be interviewed about anything. She cried like a baby when I learned she had been pregnant with my dad when she got married.
On the other hand, my maternal grandfather lived to be 99 years old, and when he was about 80, I sat down with him and video taped 4 hours of him just talking about his life. Then we went on a drive and I video'd all the places he lived, etc while he narrated. I haven't looked at the tapes but I hope to get them preserved on some kind of digital media.
My mom does tel me about her life somewhat, but she would not sit with a video camera. We did go to the places she lived and I took some photos.

Oh, what a treasure. I love the idea of a shadow box. I bet you could find a copy of their marriage certificate or license through a genealogy site or if it was local, through the county. That would be a great addition to the shadow box.
