UPDATE: I finally had time to play with my Cameo again this weekend. We were able to get the update to download completely. I have a fairly new Mac and have had no problems with other programs so I'm not sure why this update was such a struggle to download. The first cut after the download was better and much smoother but still didn't cut through any of the cardstock I had on hand.
DD was here with me today (she also has a Cameo, though it's an older model) and suggested using her blade. She is still using her original blade. Put her blade in and set it to 7 and it worked like a charm!
So apparently the software update was a major part of it AND I got two bad blades. I'm still *very* disappointed in the lack of customer service.
THANK YOU ALL for the suggestions and trying to help me troubleshoot. It's much appreciated! _________________
It was delivered about two weeks ago. I played with it a tiny bit and didn't think it was cutting that great but chalked it up to user error. This past weekend I took it to a scrapbook retreat and spent quite a bit of time playing with it. I've watched videos. I've tweaked settings. I'm not happy at all with the quality of the cut images.
I have changed the blade, made sure there were no little pieces of paper, etc around the blade, changed the mat and cut several different types of images. The cuts are passable on an 11" circle but only on thin patterned paper..it doesn't cut all the way through cardstock. I have only had one mediocre cut that cut enough that I was able to finish it with scissors and would actually use it on a project.
I noticed that the blade housing (the entire white part that goes back and forth) didn't look like it was snapped together completely. I pushed on it gently and it did snap together resulting in the one mediocre cut but I tried a font and a snowflake after that and they were all torn up again.
What a I doing wrong? At this point I feel like just returning it and getting my money back. It was too much money to accept mediocre cuts. I'm frustrated by the lack of response from Silhouette and feel like I've wasted a bunch of money not just on the machine, but the mats, blades and a week's worth of time on the 30 days of "free" downloads.

What kind of paper are you using? If it is Hobby Lobby paper - that is THE worst stuff ever and it will not cut good.
Make sure the white cover part of your blade is screw in tight. It is a very small flat piece that covers the blade area.
Are you changing your blade settings? You have to manually change the blade setting by either using the little gray ring that comes with the blade, or the hole in your machine where the blade housing fits in.
Paper can use many different settings. I cut cardstock on anything from 4 to 7 depending on the thickness of the cardstock.
I really have never had super great luck cutting light weight paper.

First, you may want to try a whole new blade. My first blade was a dud (not as much trouble as you're having, but still, I wasn't getting clean cuts). Next, it will most definitely cut through cardstock on a 4-5 setting, depending on which CS you have. American Crafts cuts nicely. Patterned paper (lightweight) tends to tear. Finally, contact Silhouette themselves; no use frustrating yourself with the machine if it's faulty!

Wow. That really sucks. I know that there were issues with bad blades, but that was quite a while ago and I thought Silhouette rectified that issue. As for the lack of response from Silhouette, I hear you. I had major issues with the software upgrade a back in the spring and the were USELESS in dealing with through email. My best advice in that regard is to call them. They are AMAZING on the phone. I spoke to someone who was awesome and I haven't had a problem since. Maybe if you are able to speak to a live person they can talk you through some troubleshooting and you can figure out exactly what the problem is. And hopefully it's something simple that you just can't see right now because of the frustration (and believe me, I understand that!) In any event if it does turn out that you've just got a "lemon" and you can take it back, I'd definitely try just exchanging it for a new one. My Cameo has changed everything about scrapbooking and I don't know what I'd do without it. Hopefully you can get yours working soon to so that you'll see what I mean. Good luck!

I have used Bazzil, American Crafts and Stampin Up cardstock along with some really old stuff from 2Ps that I assume was also Bazzil.
I have replaced the blade.
I have changed the blade setting several times.
I have taken the little white cap thing off the blades and made sure they were clear and put them back on.
I have replaced the USB cord that goes from the computer to the Cameo with one that I *know* works well.
And I HAVE called them and left two messages. No response.
I tried to update and couldn't get the update to work.

Are you sure you have the blade locked in correctly?
Also, my first blade had the little white cap trying to come off. It screws on, and it can come unscrewed. I was having similar issues to yours, and once I screwed the blade cap back on (my clue was the thing popped completely off during an attempt to cut), it cut fine after that.
I wish I could actually see your machine, what it is doing, what you are doing. I would try to help. (I'm in Northern Virginia--any chance you are, too?) I absolutely LOVE my Cameo, and I get great cuts (now that I know what I am doing).
Their customer service normally calls back the same day, often within an hour or so.
Please don't give up on your machine quite yet. It's a good machine.

scrapnnana-I know the white cap isn't loose. I've unscrewed and put back on the white cap on both blades. I read in one place that the "fin" should be in the 3:00 position and saw on a tutorial it should be in the 6:00 position. I've tried both with no difference noted. It's sitting all the way down into the holder and I don't see how it could go in any differently. It doesn't click or anything. I'm not sure what you mean by "locked"?

My first blade was a dud. I called CS, they talked me through cutting a specific image, I told them my results, and I was sent a free blade as replacement within 2 days. They were super great, helpful, and kind. I'd try calling them and explaining your issue.

If your blade is in correctly, you have your settings correct (both on the machine and in Silhouette Studio) and you are still getting bad cuts, then I would buy a new blade. Or have them send you a new blade.
If it was me I would go out and buy one but that is because I have a store close by where I can do that, but I'd still want them to send me a replacement one as well.

The settings I use with AC Card stock is "Textured Cardstock - Heavy 80 pounds" and the blade is on 5. It cuts wonderfully (although the black seems to be just a bit heavier and I either increase the blade to 6 or double cut).
Try that setting with the AC cardstock and see how it goes.

What settings are you using? I know you said you used different ones, but that could mean 1,2, or 3. I know for SU card stock you need at least a 5 or 6. I love my cameo and I want you to start loving yours as it is quite an investment. What speed are you using?

I agree with using a blade depth of 5 for AC cardstock.
I know several ladies with Cameos and each machine is a little different. The software may tell you to use a blade depth of 4, but I find I get better cuts with a 5.

**I HAVE REPLACED THE BLADE!!** That keeps getting mentioned, so I wanted to put it out there. Yes. I have replaced the blade. With a new one. No difference.
I have tried settings 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. I did not try 1 or 2.

are you loading the mat correctly? My first cut I cut through the mat. I guess that isn't the problem if yours is cutting too shallow. Have you tried double cutting? Does it still not cut all the way through?

I'm so sorry to hear you're having problems - I've had a Silhouette for years ( I started with the original, now have Cameo) and I've had a few problems along the way but I usually get good results from Customer Service. My best advice is to keep calling them and/or e-mailing them. It is entirely possible some part of the machine is defective. If you don't get anywhere I'd package it up and send it back. There's no point in wasting time on something that just isn't working. Good luck and let us know how you resolve this.

I'm sure you have done this - but have you changed the settings in the software? I really have the best luck using Textured Cardstock setting. Double check that it is the correct one. Sometimes after designing and sending it to the cutter, I have found that it defaulted back to something else like regular cardstock, or even vinyl settings....
Also - what version of the software are you using? Look under Help in the Studio program to see what version you have.

It's sitting all the way down into the holder and I don't see how it could go in any differently. It doesn't click or anything. I'm not sure what you mean by "locked"? If you don't know what I mean by locking the blade unit into place, that could be your problem. The blade holder has a blue thing on the outside part of the holder. That blue thing is the locking mechanism, and it rotates. To put your blade unit into the blade holder, the blade holder's blue locking mechanism is rotated to the left. After you put the blade into place, you twist that blue locking mechanism to the right, while making sure the blade unit stays in place and doesn't pop back up while turning the locking mechanism (I press gently on the top of the blade unit until I have turned the blue locking mechanism. The locking mechanism does sort of click into place if it is done correctly. If it is not locked correctly, nothing holds the blade firmly against the paper at the right pressure, and the blade will not cut through your paper. I have had one or two times when I thought the blade was locked down, but it had sort of popped up a little when I turned the locking mechanism, so it wasn't actually down all the way. If it is not locked into place, the blade just sits loosely on top of the cardstock or paper (or whatever you are trying to cut), and it might scratch the surface, but it might not even do that. It has to have the right pressure to cut. Please do not think I am questioning your intelligence. I am not. When you are new to a machine, there can be some things that are simply not obvious. The Silhouette is my 4th cutter. I assumed I could figure it out easy peasy, but I still made mistakes like any other new owner. The position of the fin on the blade unit is not supposed to make a difference, but it seems to make a difference for me. I position mine to the right, in the 3:00 position when looking straight down at it. My DD had hers positioned differently, and it made a difference for her, too. We were trying to figure out her problem via telephone, since she lives 2,000 miles away. It was hard, because I could not actually see what she was doing. I was just guessing based on what she told me. The same is happening here. We do want to help you. Yes, some of us might have overlooked that you had already tried changing the blade. I agree with iowgirl that you have to make sure your software settings match your blade settings. DD was also overlooking the Textured Cardstock option, and the Cardstock option did NOT work for the cardstock she was cutting. She sounded just as frustrated as you until she finally realized what she was doing wrong. Now her machine works very well for her, and she is very happy with it. I hope something here helps, whether it's my advice or someone else's. It's a good machine, but it does have a bit of a learning curve. It's totally worth it, though, if you can hang in there and figure out what the issue is. It's often different things for different people.
Let us know when you finally get it to work.

scrapnnana-Thank you for all your help. I don't mean to sound unappreciative of the posts here...not at all! I'm frustrated with the machine and lack of response to my calls. As for locking the blade-I will tinker with it more if I get a chance tonight. I do know to turn the locking mechanism from left to right and I don't remember it being "loose" (for lack of a better term) but I don't think it clicked into place or anything like that. I will check it out and be more aware of exactly what is happening and report back! Position of the blade-Yours works best at 3:00 and your DDs at something else. If I look at the teeny tiny blade it is kind of triangular. At 3:00 my the long side of my triangle is pointing towards me if I was standing in front of the machine. The short side is pointing towards the inside of the machine. Where is your long side? ETA-Setting-I am using the Textured cardstock setting in the software.

What state do you live in? If you live in NJ, I can meet you somewhere and take a look at it.
If you're somewhere else, maybe there is someone else nearby?

Did you try changing the speed? You may just have a dud machine. I had a dud blade and it was very frustrating until I realized what it was.

Can you explain a bit more about why you changed the USB cord? I have an old Portrait, and I have had bad cuts (it's like there are interruptions or hiccups in the cut) when I've had a problem with my cord... It's almost like the directions from the software/computer wasn't being delivered to the machine in a smooth/complete/consistent way... I could change nothing and cut the shape perfectly just by cutting from an SD card instead of the computer so I knew it had to do with the cord...

I would keep calling them every few hours until they answered. That is unacceptable and they should be able to walk you through tech support or send you another machine. I personally only get great cuts from smooth cardstock or heavyweight patterned paper which is fine by me and that's what I always use.

I read through all of the responses above and I'll try and make a few new suggestions. Are the rollers locked into the correct position and is the lever down? Also, one time, on one of the FB groups, I read that someone left a small piece of styrofoam (it was almost unnoticeable) in their machine after unpacking and that was affecting the cutting.

At this point, I'd exchange it for a new machine. If you still have problems... not sure what to suggest.

Some machines are just duds. The cutting mechanism may not be working correctly. You should not have to work this hard to get a Good cut. I would exchange for a new machine before you give up. I have a cricut, not a silouette, but some people have had faulty blade housings, cutting decks, bad software, not obvious problems. When the machine was replaced, the new one worked just fine.

Kerri, when you do get someone on the the phone, be sure to tell them that you have asked for help on a message board and tried everything recommended. And then ask for a new machine. If what scrapnnana has suggested doesn't work, I think it's the machine, not you. beth44 is right - it should not be this hard. And normally, it isn't.

I would suggest one more thing before going through the hassle of returning the machine & getting a new one: find someone in your area who has a Cameo and knows how to use it. If they can't get a decent cut using your machine, then it is definitely time to return your machine.
I live in Northern Virginia. If you are in my area, you could bring your machine to where my scrapping buddies and I get together, and I will bring my laptop to see if I can get it to work. I realize that you probably don't live near me, but I am sure that someone with a Cameo lives near you that might be able to give you hands on help. If an experienced Cameo user can't get it to cut right, then it's got to be the machine that is the problem.

Any update? We're you able to reach customer service, make a successful cut or have you thrown your machine out the window by now. :-)
I am in Western WA if you are local and need a Cameo user to give it a try.
