DH and I were talking about renting an RV next summer and doing a road trip. I went to a couple RVrental sites and they all say "call for pricing". That irrites me...give me a dang online quote!
Has anyone rented an RV? How many people did you put in the RV? How far did you go? Was it worth the price?

I have not, but I suspect that this: I went to a couple RVrental sites and they all say "call for pricing". That irrites me...give me a dang online quote! may be because they're going to want to go over some things with you before you even talk about price. Like appropriate licensing requirements, which apparently there are in California. www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/dl648/dl648pt2.htm

My dh rented one for a long weekend in CA earlier this year to go to a Nascar race. He rented from El Monte or something like that. It was a large one that fits quite a few people and it cost around $200 a day. He loved it and now wants to buy one... There was only 3 of them and they didn't really need this huge RV but they got there late and it's all they had left. The gal from 100days of real food blog is currently on vacation and is using a rented RV. Go to her blog and check out the post she did on renting an RV. She also rented in CA and it was somewhere around $200 a day plus mileage. DH didn't have a ton of mileage charges as he rented his just down the road from the racetrack. They got it so they could park and sleep in the infield, which is the only way to go to a Nascar race!!! Here is a link to her blog post (its mainly about real food but you can read about the trip and cost near the bottom of the post.. www.100daysofrealfood.com/2014/06/25/real-food-road-rv-trip/#more-15614

We rented an RV last summer for two weeks. Here in MI, most of the rental companies do advertise their price, including the company that we used, General RV, and there were no hidden costs in the end but the advertised rate of $1395 per week x 2 weeks cost almost $4500 in the end. Things like extra miles, extra generator usage and a fee to use the patio cover thingy are some of the things that added to the cost. We rented a class C, four winds 28 and we had 5 adults ( my dh and I, my dd18 and my BFF and her dd18). All of the companies around here, including Cruise America charged about the same for a similar rv. Where there was a difference and what made us choose the company that we used was that some companies do not guarantee the age of the rv and they could be as old as 10 years. General Rv only keeps their RV's as rentals for one year ( ours had only been used once before) We went into one from another company that was a 2010 and it was gross. My BFF was recently divorced and wanted to take a camping trip (she paid for the rv and all of the gas) with us and I normally DO NOT CAMP so we rented the rv, brought a tent for my BFF and her daughter because that is what they prefer, and off we went. The gas costs a fortune for a bigger RV, not sure what size you are looking for. We drove through Canada, spent the night at Niagara Falls, then most of our trip in Maine and ended in Boston. The Rv sites cost us an average of $125.00 a night. We had an absolute ball! We could never have afforded to do what we did on our own but it was soooo much fun. We didn't cook as much as we thought we would because our days were so packed that we knew that we would be pooped by the time we got back. It was a pain not having a car (the company we used would not let you trail a car) but we made do. Cost aside, I would absolutely travel in an rv again! If you have any other questions, please ask away!

We rented a few times before we purchased a trailer. 200 per day sounds about right. If renting over a long weekend, the minimum rental length was more than 3 days. It might have been 5 days. That annoyed me. I know you are looking at a road trip, but one of the best rentals we did was in the Sierra Nevada area. We reserved our campsite, then contacted a trailer rental company that delivered the trailer to our site. We just drove up and moved in. I liked having that home base, yet having our car available for all the daily road trips. I just love all the lakes and fishing holes that are between bishop and mammoth. I think that trailer rental was less than 100 per day.

I like the idea of budgeting out the trip by day and seeing if it's worth it. It would only be 3 o us (DH, me and DS)...maybe the MIL (I sure hope not). So we could do a medium RV easily. We are wanting to go North from here (Central CA) with stops all the way up to Victoria BC. We are thinking 7 days max.
I will call that place that said 'call' and get more info.
Scrappinmom3....I didn't realize RV spots where that expensive. Tells you how out of this I am...I was thinking $40 a night spots. I'm sure there are cheap sites but they are also probably gross.

We just camped for four days at the Silverwood campground right outside the Silverwood theme park in Idaho. Four nights cost $156. plus taxes. This is the most we've paid for a site. We have reservations for a state park in August for 4 days and the total is $90. Park prices can vary widely depending on where they are and who owns them We spent 6 days (2 different parks) with 2 70+ lb dogs, two teenage girls, me and dh in a 31 foot RV and we had a great time.

We rented one to go to Country Thunder (local music festival). It was fun, but kind of a pain. Gas costs a fortune and you have to hook up to water and empty the toilet. I'm not about that life. I'd rather drive and stay in hotels where you don't have to deal with what you flush.

I haven't done much camping, but I thought it would be much cheaper too! I think part of it was the locations we were going - Bar Harbor, Maine, Boston, Ma and another one that I can't remember. We also stayed for three nights in Greenville, Maine (moosehead lake) and that was much cheaper but also a lot more rustic. I hope you get to go!
