DD is getting her braces off today. After nearly 4 yrs, she is thrilled, to say the least. She'll still need some major dental work (implants) afterward to replace teeth that never developed, but she's finally at an age that that work can now proceed. But, for today, I just want her to be happy she's getting the braces off. It's been over 30 yrs since I had braces. What do we need to know? Should she take a painkiller before heading to the appointment? Any advice?

I remember my teeth being sensitive but not to the point of needing painkillers for a few days afterward. I also remember it being weird having food in my mouth with the extra space that was once occupied by the braces.

Get a second (or even third ) retainer case when you get the retainer next appt. We kept one in my purse DD's lunch bag and the car for the year they had to wear it full time. It's much easier when they only need to wear it at night.
Take a nice smile picture!!
Go for a dental cleaning.

DD had hers removed a few months ago (after having them for 2 years), but didn't have any problems at all. It was amazingly quick, in fact. Afterward, though, she, like Mimima's son, said that her teeth felt (and looked) fat. It definitely took her a few days to get used to it. Getting extra retainer cases is a great idea. Erin's ortho specifically said she was not to wear hers out of the house. He usually tells his patients that, unless he's especially worried about the teeth moving. Otherwise, she was just to wear them after school and at night. After the first month, she was told to just wear them overnight. She usually remembers...  Congrats to your DD ! And you know you have to post a picture later, right? |

I just got mine off a few months ago after having them for three years. I don't remember having any pain at all, but I do remember my teeth felt weird and slimy. Lol. I have to wear my retainer 24/7 for the first year then just nightly after that. I definitely recommend the multiple cases for her retainer. Tell her congratulations.

My son just had his removed. He didn't have any pain and the office did a cleaning at the same time.

How cool! My son is having his removed today, too--right now, in fact. I didn't even think about painkillers; I had no pain when mine were removed, just those overly-slick teeth that took some getting used to.

Yes, take pain relief before the appointment. We didn't see this before hand and the office said no need - DD wishes she had taken something. It was more painful than she expected. (wait until she has to get the implants. ugh. I'm trying to play that down for now) |

I have to wear my retainer 24/7 for the first year then just nightly after that. I definitely recommend the multiple cases for her retainer. Tell her congratulations. They installed a permanent wire retainer on the back side of her front teeth - both top and bottom. I'm sure that's going to take some getting used to. When I asked how long that would be in place, the orthodontist said to just leave it indefinitely. DD's not happy about it, but if it keeps the teeth from moving, it's a good thing. (someday she'll be thankful, I'm sure of it. Even seeing how my teeth have moved so many years after I had braces isn't encouragement.
We won't get the retainer for 2 weeks, but I'll be sure to ask for multiple cases.

I remember constantly running my tongue over my front teeth after getting my braces off. She's excited, but I'm afraid it's only the beginning of so much more dental work that she still needs. (None of the typical get the braces off and have a gorgeous smile. She still needs a lot of dental work including implants and crowns on a couple of teeth). |

I never had braces, so it was such an unusual and memorable comment. He does have a gorgeous, albeit expensive, smile. |

The permanent retainers on the top and bottom are a good thing. My sister-in-law had braces as a teen and her teeth are all kinds of crooked now. If she had the permanent retainers it wouldn't have happened. I think that as an adult, when all is said and done, your daughter will be glad.

I have had a permanent retainer on the bottom teeth since my braces were removed more than 20 years ago. Make sure she really knows hoe to floss...I have to use a floss "key" that helps get the floss under the wire. I really don't like it but don't tell her that  Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I had ortho work as a teen. I had peg laterals, so I have veneers on those. And at some point about six months in, I lost the retainer. Not a HUGE deal at the time. Really. But your teeth have a funny way of wanting to revert to what genetics tells them, one one of the laterals shifted back behind my front tooth. And it was impacting my bite. So now, about 20 years later, I had to pay my own $1600 out of pocket (adult ortho is almost never covered by insurance!) to run through a remedial course of ortho to get that darn tooth back to where it belonged. That was the CHEAPEST and SHORTEST option. The last thing they are giving me is a retainer. I will have to wear it overnight for, oh, forever. I will probably give up on it about five years from now. LOL. In 20 more years, I don't think I am going to care. The ortho's line is that maintenance is a lifetime thing. I am not sure about that, but it is at least a decades long thing! If she doesn't want to wear the retainer, tell her to start saving for her remedial work now. |
