I was too afraid of my mother to ask her for anything. She worked nights as a nurse, so she was always tired and cranky. I was so shy and sensitive that it was easier to "hide" and not call attention to myself for fear of her mood. My younger brother on the other hand was not afraid to ask for anything and pretty much got whatever he asked for.

When I was growing up, I wanted to go to someplace neat on vacation... we always went to the same place every year. (It was a small family-run fishing resort on a lake in northwestern Minnesota, same week of the year, same cabin-- since before my parents were even married to each other; my Grandpa started going up there in the early 1950s, I think.) I did love going to Minnesota, but I so wanted to go someplace different and cool, like a trip to Yellowstone, Disney, etc. (even the Brady Bunch got to go to Arizona and Hawaii!! lol!!)
My parents started taking bigger vacation trips after all four of us kids were grown up and moved out; that's not fair, darn it!! I asked my mom years later as an adult, 'why did we always go to the same place on vacation?' and besides the fact that it was very affordable, her answer was: they didn't want us kids to be arguing over where we wanted to or didn't want to go!! (I'm 45, and I still haven't ever gone to any of the Disney parks, Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, etc.)

I wanted a picture at my high school graduation ceremony with both of my parents. My brother has a picture with them at his graduation. My sister has a picture with them at her graduation. I really wanted one as well. But when I graduated, they'd been divorced for a few years and refused to stand together for ten seconds so I could have a photo like the ones my brother and sister had. I was still bitter enough three years later to elope and not invite them to my wedding. If they couldn't be in a picture together, they didn't need to be in a room together for a wedding, right? See how that works? (There was more reasoning than that for not inviting them, but for brevity's sake, I'll leave it at that.)
Other than that, I always wanted a Beauty Secrets Barbie. My best friend had one and was always kind enough to have it ready for me to play with when I spent the night at her house.

I wanted these dolls that were in the Sear's catalog. Having Googled I'm pretty sure they were Effanbee Four Season dolls. There were four of the exact same dolls in different seasonal outfits. I loved the winter one especially. I never asked for them as while my parents were very generous, I knew there was no way they would buy four of the exact same doll just with different outfits. So I just sighed over the catalog.

I wanted my own land line "teen's phone", instead we all shared the house phone with a 50 foot cord.
I always wanted my own room, hated sharing a room. It happened on occasion, but just when I settled in my own room, a step-sibling would want to move back in , thus began the room sharing shuffle(that happened multiple times).

I wanted the white, French provincial bedroom furniture (with canopy bed & pretty linens!!) that some of my friends had! My sister had the French provincial bedroom furniture in white. It was beautiful with a white canopy and it was very pretty. The canopy while very pretty gave.her.nightmares.for.years. until my dad sawed off the posts. Scariest things ever. It may have looked pretty but it was seriously the stuff of nightmares! You didn't miss out on anything!

This is so random, but I wanted to wear a skirt as part of my uniform for my Camp Fire girls uniform. My mom was practical and I had blue slacks, but the other little girls (who were b*tches, btw) had the skirts and the knee socks. I'm sure I was much warmer and such when we were in parades, though.
Looking through the replies, the only other thing that came to mind were the Barbie canopy bed (I think I wanted a real canopy bed, too) and the Barbie camper. I totally still have all my Barbies, too! (my fiancé doesn't understand why, lol!)

Omg!!! So funny that the Snoopy Snowcone Machine is mentioned!!! My older brother got one, and all we did was drink all the sugary "juices" ....our Mom was furious!!! I wanted the white, French provincial bedroom furniture (with canopy bed & pretty linens!!) that some of my friends had! Also wished my alcoholic, depressed Mom hadn't been so awful when I needed a few dollars to pay for all the Girl Scout badges I'd earned. (the money was NOT the issue, it was just her being mean---my Dad paid PLENTY of alimony!) Also wanted a Mom who didn't attend the Badge Ceremony drunk, and wished the pictures she'd taken weren't all blurry! REALLY wanted to be in Marching Band & Swim Team, and have a Mom who was willing to help and carpool like all the other "normal" parents.... Junior High & High School---wanted more than two new outfits for the new school year ...(again, it wasn't about the money---she had a generous alimony from my Dad). Wanted pets ....loved playing with all my friends' pets! Finally got 2 hamsters that I adored, but Mom despised them. When we were preparing to move, she made my brother set them free outside....my heart was broken!!! Moms don't have to be drunk to be uninvolved. Hugs. I wanted a canopy twin bed, but my room was the guest bedroom. And no canopy because it was a "dirt" catcher.

...the Camp Fire girls post reminded me that I always wanted to be a Girl Scout and wear the uniform with the sash and badges!! I grew up in a really small town, and they had a Boy Scout troop but no Girl Scouts.

Mine's depressing but here it goes. I wanted a real Barbie. Not a fake knock off (I had 2 of those) but a real one. I would have even taken the cheapo swimsuit one. My sister had one but I couldn't touch it.
I really wanted parents that cared about anything I did. My dad went to my 8th grade and high school graduations. That's it. Nothing else. Now that I think about it he might not have gone to 8th grade. No one missed my brother's football games though. I was talented in music, speech and art. Fine arts night was my "thing". I think mom came once. Dad never.
It stings, but I've moved on. I'm better at parenting than what I was taught so there ya go.

My grandma spoiled the heck out of me. I had nearly everything I ever wanted. Except...a Holly Hobbie oven and a pet monkey. I guess I never asked Grandma for the Holly Hobbie oven or I would have had it. Wonder why I didn't think to ask her when my mom didn't buy it for me. I had tons of Barbies and all the stuff that went with her. Camper, pool, townhouse, etc. In fact, I still have most of that stuff in my basement. My favorite thing was my Whamo Glow In The Dark Magic Window, which is sitting on my dresser. Haha. I also loved the Barbie makeup head, which yes, is in the basement. But...no Holly Hobbie oven or pet monkey.

I was in fifth grade and I really wanted those tennis shoes with the little zippered pocket on the side that were so cool back then. I told my dad I wanted them. His response, "Do your other shoes fit fine?" and "Do you have friends?" "Then you don't need those shoes."

A Jem doll because she is truly truly truly outrageous. My cousin Chrissy had every cool toy. She had Jem AND Day and Night Barbie. I was green with envy.

I wanted the Glamour Gals cruise ship so badly. Our neighbor had it and would only let us look at it, not play with it. She also had Kissing Barbie, who came with a heart shaped tube of lipstick, that I also coveted.

I wanted a boom box really badly. Like to record stuff off the radio and play my tapes and just to have in my room. My mother was oddly opposed to the whole idea. When I was young, I got a cassette player instead. The same kind they had at school with the square speaker on the back and the buttons flat on the top. Then in junior high she got me a clock radio that had a tape player in it. Not a boom box like those little pink ones that rounded on the sides and retro-looking and utterly cool. She said she was afraid I was going to carry a real boom box around on my shoulder like some delinquent. Mothers can be so very strange sometimes.

Looking back it's funny because I took meticulous care of all my toys; no cut hair on my dolls or missing pieces to games! I was very blessed to have a great childhood with lots of toys, however the one item I desperately wanted was the Barbie Dreamhouse! I had the townhouse, cottage, cars, etc, but the Dreamhouse was too expensive ($150-200). It haunted me, so I bought one as an adult! PS- I had the Glamour Gals cruise ship only to find out my parents sold it at a garage sale! I'm still very attached to my toys!

A Swatch Watch. My mom had this weird thing about buying "brands". If it was for reputation and quality, she had no problem, but fads, no way.

A Muppet playdoh set from my local department store. By the time I had saved up the money to buy it, all of the stock was gone Perhaps the beginning of my tendency to put things on credit cards now and pay them off later, just to be sure I can get what I'm after And now I'm off to read the rest of the thread and remember all those cool kid things!

Ok, so since we are going there...I wanted to be important to someone. I wanted someone to tell me I mattered, was important, and was loved. I had lots of stuff (minus the glasses and rock tumbler), but I never have felt like I mattered.

An Easy Bake Oven. Mom said she'd teach me to use the real one instead, but that came with Mom's supervision and wasn't as "cool" as the TV commercials where no adults were anywhere around.
And there was this Playdoh product where you carved off the dough on the outside to see the statue inside. They called it sculpting. My mom called it overpriced crap. But this idea that something was hidden inside, waiting for you to pull it out of the layers stuck with me hard. I can't tell you how many times I've sat down with photos and made a scrapbooking page with the mental image of that sculpting toy -- creativity, to me, is about seeing what lies underneath the usual.

Not very cool, but I wanted braces. Me too!! I have very crooked teeth but braces were not an option. I was the only one without them. I so coveted those rainbow rubber bands.

My heart is breaking for so many of you! When I was young I wanted a sister. I was the youngest and only girl with two big brothers. My middle brother would come to my rescue from time to time and play dolls with me. He, with his G.I. Joes and I, with my Barbies. When I got married and started having children I strongly desired a daughter. It just wasn't meant to be. I'm desperately hoping he (and my SIL) will once again come to my aid and provide me with a niece.

I wanted Pop Tarts!...well really any junk food, but mainly Pop Tarts. My friend, Kristie, always had Pop Tarts at her house. I loved to spend the night at Kristie's house. Her mom used to ask her what flavors she wanted when she left for the grocery store. I was totally jealous of Kristie's pantry. My mom believed in health and nutrition way before health and nutrition were cool (70's). We never had junk food or sweets in our house unless it was a birthday or holiday.
I also really wanted a Barbie swimming pool. I made one out of a shoe box which resulted in a flood and a spanking. I also wanted a REAL Barbie doll...well, as many as I could get. I had a Dawn or a Nancy or some other such nonsense with short brown hair (after I gave her a nice bob hair cut with scissors by "accident").
