I was another one who wanted a rock tumbler. I was convinced that I could turn all the gravel in my driveway into lovely stones. Well, I must have really talked about how much I wanted one as a kid because DH bought me one for Christmas several years ago. That thing was SO loud. Now I know why my parents didn't get me one!

Pointe shoes. I danced from the time I was three until I was in 9th grade, and at that stage, my dance teacher wanted my class to go en pointe. My parents considered the expense and all the other activities I was involved in. I'm sure they also considered my talent and potential since I was definitely not born with a willowy ballerina physique. They decided to decline. So I focused on jazz, and then moved into high school show choir. Probably a better fit for me, to be honest, but I'm still mesmerized by pretty, new, pink pointe shoes.

I wanted a telescope. I thought I would be able to see the rings on Saturn and the red dot on Jupiter and beautiful galaxies and such--you know, like the photos taken by super ultra telescopes like the Hubble. I guess some things are best left as dreams.

A Barbie doll my mom would not allow me to have one bc Barbie has boobies. So at the age of 12 or 13 I was allowed to get one, and I didn't want one that time
My BFF had everything cool, the cool parents, the coolest clothes, shoes, everything. Oh how I wanted to be in her family.

An easy bake oven. I was baking in the big oven from a pretty early age, but all I ever really wanted was an easy bake oven {sigh}. A friend had one and I would cross my fingers that we got to bake something whenever I was at her house. You could still get one... they still sell them! BUT, because of the "safety thing" they suck now. Takes forever to cook with a 2 watt bulb and won't open until totally cool. Cold cool. Your cake may mold before you are done.

I wanted a pet spider monkey. I have no idea where that came from, but I thought my life would be perfect, if only I had a pet spider monkey.
I'm so glad I didn't get one!

Me too!!! I begged for one for years, to no avail. My mom thought it would get used as much as the Easy Bake Ocen (read: never after the first week). She was probably right, but I still wanted one. I didn't even like sno-cones that much, so I'm really not sure why I wanted it lol Same here! But even now, when I see a picture of one online, I get an odd twinge of longing. Then I think about actually buying one, and it goes away quickly. My DS just found one today at a resale/antique store. He knew I had one back in the day. I ALMOST bought it.

I wanted glasses with my name written in the corner. I did did not wear glasses, so this was never going to happen. Didn't stop me from thinking they were super cool. this reminds me; I think I had glasses with a smiley face in the corner of the lenses...?!? I haven't thought about that in probably 30 years-- thank you for that memory! I always wanted some of the really cool (expensive) Barbie stuff; the 2-story Barbie house with the elevator, and the pink Barbie RV.

Young parents! I wanted young parents. This makes me sad. I so hope my DD doesn't feel this way. i My parents were old at 45. They had already btdt with my oldest cousin and my bother. What I didn't until recently is that they dropped me at my grandmother's and then took my brother out on fun adventures. He was older and more fun.

Sting-ray bike with banana seat! A hot pink one when I outgrew my little girl training bike. Instead my parents gave me a huge normal bike for my eighth birthday. They said it was one that I could ride for years, not a fad like the wheelie/sting rays. It road like a tank next to my friends cute bikes. These are the things that make us stronger, right ? They completely surprised us kids a few Christmases later by having Santa bring us matching 10-speeds, just as they became popular . I felt redeemed. Reading thread reminded me I wanted an easy bake oven. But my always practical mom taught me to cook very early, so I was using a real oven. She did let me try the easy bake mixes, in the real oven so we could do a taste test. Have to say practicality won that one. But it still wasn't as cute.

A members only jacket and a pair of Chuck Taylors. Sigh. And the polo shirt with the little alligator on the front. I got a pair of chucks at a shoe store in Manhattan when I was 27, and they hurt my feet. What a letdown. I remember buying my own converse, red, probably after i started babysitting. I know I bought them on sale, and think they were under ten bucks- $7 comes to mind. Oh, to go back in time and buy more at that price! They were the "cheaper" tennis shoes back then. Cool again, my teens want, and I always watch for the on sale and add coupon on top of that. Canvas shoes for $60 seems nuts when I remember paying $7! Lucky to get them in the mid $20 range, on clearance with promo code and begging!

When I was about 11, I saw a really cool bike at the local toy store. It was white and pink, and had a double saddlebag bike basket on the rear fender. It was a Schwinn Hollywood, and I thought it was so cool. I begged for it for Christmas, and I got it! I was in heaven for about an hour. I shortly discovered that my best friend got an English racing bike- a 3 speed with narrow racing tires and hand brakes. It was a dark Hunter green. Mine had clunky coaster foot brakes, and big fat tires. I'm embarrassed to admit that I was mortified to ride that bike. I'm sure my parents sacrificed to buy it for me, and they were so pleased that they got me what I asked for. But it was PINK! What was I thinking? I was not a pinky, girly girl, I was a tomboy, and my friend's racing bike was so sleek and grown up. I longed for a bike like hers, but I bit my tongue, never mentioned it to my parents, and gamely rode that bike for several years.
As a younger child, I don't remember really longing for things I didn't get- either I was spoiled, or I had low expectations. Maybe a little bit of both.

They completely surprised us kids a few Christmases later by having Santa bring us matching 10-speeds, just as they became popular . I felt redeemed. I have a story in a similar vein. My mom had a completely arbitrary rule that I couldn't have a bike until I was 10 years old. (She never did explain herself.) After I outgrew my tricycle at three or four, I had to get by on roller skates for the next six years. I loved skating, but skates didn't really provide the same transportation and opportunities as a bike. At any rate, my friend in the neighborhood had a couple of 10 speeds, so I taught myself to ride one at her house. No training wheels or adult coaching and we were very careful not to ride by my house if my parents were outside. By the time I was given my cousin's old banana seat bike at 10, I'd been riding 10 speeds for years. I had to tell them to take the training wheels off--what did they take me for? A CHILD? My younger brother and sister, of course, got bikes at much younger ages. I think my sister was three! Being the oldest with all the imposed rules that were discarded for the other two was such a joy.

I really wanted a bike with a banana seat. name brand sneakers and a Columbia ski jacket. I would look so hard at Picway and Payless shoes for the plain sneakers that might pass for Nike or Reeboks. Every Christmas I asked for that jacket and I never got it. I finally put one on layaway when I was 16 and bought it with babysitting money.

I wanted an electric toothbrush. I had crooked teeth, but the gals on the commercials had beautiful, white teeth. I was convinced I could too if only I had that electric toothbrush. I finally got braces at age 46, an electric toothbrush just wasn't enough.

A canopy bed. I thought they were sooooo glamorous. It never would have fit.. we lived in a story and a half house, with the sloping roof on the second floor and I had the smaller of the two bedrooms on that level. But still..white canopy bed with pink bedding. *sigh*

My own Ken doll. My sister and I are just a year and 11 days apart in age. We both had a Barbie with a few outfits and later for Christmas or birthdays we were given a Ken doll to share!!! I'm not sure who thought this was a good idea. But boy oh boy did I want my own Ken doll...and maybe to whack my sister over the head with the shared Ken doll.
