Here in So Cal we are in such a drought that washing your car in the drive way is just not a good idea.
So being the resourceful gal that I am I now wash my car in my garage. You may think I'm nuts but this is how I do it. I wait til I have a medium load of clothes to wash. Washer is right there in my garage. Set my washer to fill on large load so there is lots of water. I simply wash the car section by section rinsing out the cloth a lot. Lastly I get one bucket of fresh water and ago over it with a clean fiber cloth. Then buff it down with another dry cloth. Price is right and I am not wasting too much water. And my Toyota looks as good as any done at the car wash.
My Toyota is garaged when I am at home so it doesn't need washing more than once a month.

I would love to be able to wash my car more often but I live in a condo and we don't have a place to wash cars here. they locked all our water spouts so can't even take a hose out to do it. I go to my mom's but we have had so much rain here that it hasn't been washed in awhile. I do have a bottle of cleaner that you can use in place of washing..you just spray it on and wipe it off..I keep that in my car for when ever I see bird poop or get hit by the sprinklers.

For a while, I would only wash my car just before going to get the oil changed. Somehow, one of the tail light covers got a microscopic hole in it, and every time water from the car wash got in there, it would short out the bulb, which isn't SUPER expensive but a pain to have to stop and get taken care of. (Yes, I know you can do it yourself but there was something about the assembly on mine that I really decided it was worth $13 to have Firestone do.) But I just got a new (used) car, so that's not a problem anymore.
It is summer now, and where I live, the real killer is the salt/brine/beet powder that gets laid down for snow in the winter, so I probably won't have a whole lot of occasion to wash it (and the dealer will wash it when I take it in for my Year of Free Oil Changes) myself for the near future. In the winter, I will likely do it when (1) I can no longer see out the parts of the windshield that don't get clean with washer fluid and (2) the car wash is open (because it's not open below about 20 degrees) and (3) no more snow is forecast for at least three days.
I usually opt for the $7 wash: whatever one has the undercar spray but only one coat of wax.
And hells no, I don't wash my car by hand.
