I have a cough. My throat hurts. I do NOT have time to be sick. I'm a school trustee and we are in the midst of some really important deliberations. Tonight I have to leave in 25 minutes for a meeting to attend that's being hosted by the District Parents' Advisory Committee about our facilities plan & school closures. There are some very controversial topics on the table. There is another meeting, hosted by us (the District) on Thursday at one of the high schools that is greatly impacted. I may have to vote in a way they will find disappointing. I can't do that and not attend the meeting at their school to hear their concerns.
Tomorrow I have to meet with the mayor, go to a committee meeting re: LGBT youth, then attend a Welcome to High School next door, then pop in to a meeting with the Federal Leader of the Opposition, is who is making a visit to our riding.
Wednesday we have a facilities meeting with other government stakeholders - our Mayor, MLAs, reps from the Aboriginal groups, etc., etc. I can't let a little cough keep me from that. Later that night is our Education Committee meeting - a meeting of the full board. That I could probably attend via phone. We have a set up in the board room for that. I can email in the 2 reports I have to present.
Friday night and Saturday I'm scheduled to attend a meeting of the Vancouver Island School Trustees Association. I'm our rep. I do have an alternate from our board & I'm hoping he can attend in my place. Things aren't really going to get any less busy until we get a week off from March 23-27. I have to push through it.
So I plan to do a lot of listening/avoid talking. What's the best cough suppressant I can get to allow me to 'fake it,' so I'm not disturbing the meeting with my cough? I have enough Halls cough candies to get me through tonight (though I wish they were a little stronger). I'm going to try to get in to the doctor tomorrow morning to see what she can prescribe me, though I imagine it's viral so I know I shouldn't take an antibiotic.

Delysm (Sp?) cough syrup is what the pharmacist recommended to me.

The only thing that ever works for me to calm a cough is Vicks vaporub. So, you'll smell like a cough drop, but I find it really effective-- it's what lets me go to sleep when I have an unrelenting cough. You might want to wear a turtleneck or scarf to help funnel those vapors up to your space (when I go to sleep, I pull the sheets up over my nose).

Thanks ladies... heading out to the meeting & then will pop into the drug store near there (it's open until 10 pm). Will try the Vicks to sleep tonight.

Will definitely get it checked for strep, though I've had strep a lot in the past and this feels more like a normal, garden variety, run of the mill cold. It had better be, because as mentioned, there are certain meetings this week that aren't optional. I have GOT to be there. One of them, I have to leave for now.

Delsym is what has been recommended time and again. Mucinex will help if you have mucus running down the back of your throat, causing the cough.
Please cover your cough and don't touch your face. That's a lot of people to expose, whether it's a virus or strep.

Vicks on the soles of your feet, covered by cotton socks. Gargle with Listerine. A spoonful of honey. That's all I have.

Be careful with mentholated cough drops. Last year I had a horrible cough and used them. A few days in my gums and teeth started hurting. They hurt so much I couldn't eat. Finally someone asked me how many mentholated cough drops I was using every day. I quit using them and within a couple of days my mouth was better. I still ended up going to the doc for the cough though.

I'm recovering from a bout with the flu. Second one this year, and I did get a flu shot. My symptoms: lots of coughing, head congestion, body aches. I'm wondering if you have the flu. Regardless, I hope you get well soon.

Thanks ladies.
I've done some rearranging... a colleague will do the Gr 7 thing tomorrow night. He's also promised to try to use some of his contacts to get me an introduction to Thomas Mulcair, federal leader of the NDP, at a later date. J - he's actually a long time friend & mentor thinks our riding is actually one Mr. Mulcair will make multiple visits to between now & the federal election. I'm a political junkie & while there are things about Mr. Mulcair I don't agree with, he's the Right Honourable Leader of the party I support & currently leader of the Opposition. I really have to meet him one day.
I'm postponing the meeting with the mayor, I talked to the Board Chair & he said emailing in my reports was fine, and I found other trustees to attend the meetings on Friday night and Saturday.
So the only things I have to go to are, potentially the LGBT committee mtg (I might be able to participate via phone; we have a phone set up with a good speaker system in the board room for these sorts of things)and definitely the Stakeholder meeting Wednesday morning, plus the one Thursday evening. I just don't feel right about missing anything related to our facilities/budget discussions.

You can also get OTC cough medicine with codeine. Or you can get some that a compounding pharmacy puts together with codeine. We had some made for our dog who was coughing and had pain. He bites me if I give it to him. I have taken it and holy cow cough symptoms were gone! It works fast too.

I'm sorry you're fighting off what is hopefully only a cold. I'm glad you started this thread, though, because I had no idea that there was any OTC cough medicine that worked. I'll know the next time I'm fighting off a cough to reach for the Delsym and know that I'll be able to get a bit of relief.

You go girl! Hope you feel better, while you're helping your area's kids! You can get Delsym with Dextromethorphan or Guaifenesin to relieve congestion.

I'm fighting the same type thing and been taking Musinex with not a lot of improvement. But I mainly want to congratulate you on all the great things you are involved in.

I'm fighting the same type thing and been taking Musinex with not a lot of improvement. But I mainly want to congratulate you on all the great things you are involved in. Thanks. I think I allowed myself to get a little run down. Doesn't help that I have low iron, so I imagine that means lowered immune system. Our vice chair found someone to take her one son to soccer so she can cover for me at the LGBT committee (we actually call it SOGI - Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity). She's bringing her 4 year old with her; he's a really sweet kid who is very well versed in quietly colouring or playing a video game with the sound off in the back. The worst thing about that is I feel even guiltier about the fact that I can't find a way to vote with her on the facilities issues. A high school was closed. I am 99% sure there'll be a vote to reopen it and at this point I just can't support it. No evidence has been shown to me that it was the wrong decision. Was it a poorly executed decision? DEFINITELY. But it wasn't the wrong choice.

Ugh...in the future, as long as it's just a cough, I do hot tea with cough drops too. That way, it soothes on the way down. I also would use delsym and if my cough was bad and annoying, I would hit my albuterol so that it wouldn't annoy.
Most coughs are caused by post nasal drip, asthma, and GERD.

I vote for Mucinex DM too. (The DM is important.) Carry some Ricola lozenges with you in case you have a coughing fit at an inappropriate time.

I'm just getting over this. Ugg it's horrible and long lasting. It's be over 2 weeks and my voice is still raspy. I went to the DR to verify it wasn't strep. Lots of ibuprofen for the throat. I have prescription strength. Then water and cough drops. I also used Mucinex but it really didn't/doesn't do anything for me. Hope you feel better soon.
