Pack a box with toilet paper, paper towels, soap, etc. marked to be opened first.

Use the Pods or similar system. Rent it for a month and load as you pack, have it moved to your new place and unpack over a couple of weeks. Less stressful than moving everything in one day.

My GF just moved her family using PODS. She rented three of the largest size and loaded everything with friends and family help. She said it was cheaper. My only problem with this is packing properly but since she was moving just down the street she was not worried about it going far. I think she said the pods were 250 each? She took two weeks to fill the pods and then called them to come back and move for her.

Remove full drawers from dressers, wrap them (with clothes inside) in industrial strength plastic wrap, and you don't have to box them up or unpack.

Look into hiring someone to do the packing for you. It was much cheaper than I expected. For our 4 bedroom house (equivalent), it was around $400 and done in 6 hours. We had most of the supplies but it was about $300 in labor and $100 in additional supplies. TOTALLY worth it. I thought it was going to be far more pricey.

MY best tip??? Don't do it!!! Sorry, just did it and don't recommend it. HA! The only real tip I have is, if you need storage, go with Pods. Their service ROCKS!

It depends on how far you are moving and how long you have to do it! My last move? Just over 5 miles and about 1 week to complete the entire move. My mother and I spent one entire day just moving the kitchen. I had the fragile stuff packed several weeks before the move. On the day we did the kitchen we only packed the number of boxes that would fit in my car and then moved and unpacked before getting the next load. I organized my kitchen as I went. But for a long distance move, this won't obviously work as well.

Clothes on hangers.. leave on hangers and wrap and carry in a big blanket, typically our comforter (that is if you are not moving long distance) we did this moving locally from place to place using our car.
If you have boxes for hanging clothes I put pillows on the bottom of the box.. and extra hangers on the top.
I used smaller boxes for kitchen dishes and such so they won't be so heavy (if you are doing the lifting) Wrap wrap wrap.
Anything liquid put in Ziplock bags

Pack a suitcase with clothes for a week for each person, including toothbrush, toothpaste, meds, makeup, etc. This way you have clothes and personal items without having to look for them or unpack them ASAP.

Pick up a roll end of newsprint to pack breakables. Newspaper places will sell them to you cheap and you don't have to wash anything after you unpack, unless you really want to. And there roll ends go a long, long way!

Set up your beds first. You need to sleep.
Pack up the stuff you love first. At the end when you are exhausted and just want to donate or throw out stuff, it will be stuff you do not care as much about.

I had made several short moves before I made a cross country move. I damaged some trays that were silverplated because the vibration of the road made the serving piece rub a "hole" in the finish. I also learned that the vibration made the flatwear rub and scratch items....that I didn't know could/would be scratched.
I use washcloths and towels to put between plates/saucers. I also use them to wrap items made of glass. It moves the linens and cushions the items. I also used pillow cases to wrap things.
Write the contents on the outside of each box, and also indicate which room in the house that box's contents should be placed.
As mentioned, put "immediate necessities" in a box and mark that "open first."
Do whatever necessary to keep trash separated from the things you are moving. (My friend tossed all her shoes in a black plastic bag ..........and yes, they were all tossed in the trash.)

Great tips!
Use foam plates between your real ones to pad them.
Use empty wine boxes for your breakable pantry stuff.
Use colored duct tape and color code your rooms.

Thanks so much! . Were moving from VA to MI, so pretty far. I started packing today, and got about 10 boxes done. I have purged an INSANE amount of baby clothes/little kid clothes. I have so many bags to take to the clothes drop box, it's nuts.

It's super tempting to go get all the free boxes from everywhere, but I was a MUCH happier mover when I sucked it up and went to Sam's Club and spent some money on 10-packs of moving boxes. It's a lot easier to load them in your whatever (car, truck, moving van) when they're all the same size. I also found it virtually impossible to overpack them to the point of being too heavy. (Except for boxes of books. Those are always too heavy.) Also pick up lots of packing tape, a giant roll of bubble wrap, and a couple of spools of what is basically saran wrap. Use it wrap stuff with drawers, and you can leave some of your stuff IN those drawers.

Use the biggest boxes for bedding and towels. Toys also work well in very large boxes. Smallest ones for books, or put books in a rolling suitcase. Set aside a box or two for cleaning supplies to be packed up last after you've cleaned your house. Put hardware for beds and other furniture in a ziploc bag, label it, and put it in an easy to find place. Get a bigger truck than you think you need. We recently moved 4 miles, had moved several car/truck loads of stuff ahead of time, and got a 26 foot Uhaul truck to move our furniture and other large items. We still filled it up twice!
