DD has been in hospital since Saturday. Severe headache that has never lifted, weakness in the left side of her face, arm and leg. Stiff neck, sensitivity to light, constant vomiting. Vertigo. She has had 2 CT scans, a lumbar puncture, and an MRI. These have all come back normal. Her blood results are also normal. The only thing that was a little out of the ordinary was the opening pressure of the lumbar puncture, but the doctor I spoke to said it wasn't hugely abnormal, just a bit high.
So, based on your own experiences, does anyone have any suggestions what else we should consider?

Lesley, I have no knowledge that would help, just wanted to say that I'm sorry to hear your DD is still unwell. You guys are overdue a run of good luck. (Hugs) to you both.

My guess right off is viral menigitis. She certainly has all the symptoms. My DH had it many years ago. Viral has to run it's course just like any virus but I do remember my DH was very ill.

Are you at a large university hospital?? You're in the UK right??? Might be time to change hospitals and get another opinion. caro does viral meningitis have a "test"

Lesley that must be so worrying for you, and they seem to have carried out all of the initial tests that would be done. I have no suggestions I am sorry but do hope that the medical team are able to get to the root of her problem soon. Thinking of you x

Those tests would have shown if it was viral meningitis. That is something here that doctors are very aware of.

Christine, I don't remember because it was a long time ago. I do know it was diagnosed by DH's DR but I can't remember how. He was extremely sick , fever, had a seizure, and terrible headache, vomiting and stiff neck. Also weakness on one side of his body

My first thought was stroke. My 2nd thought was meningitis. . Pretty sure both of those would have been identified in the tests she's already had. Sorry I'm not much help I hope she starts feeling better soon and that the doctors can figure it out ASAP!

Mine too. Those are exactly the symptoms my SIL had when she had a stroke. Hope you get some answers very soon and she makes a complete recovery.

The the Spinal fluid drawn from the spinal tap would have shown viral meningitis if that were it.
Lesley, I have no additional ideas, as I was thinking meningitis when I read your description the other day. But I wanted to offer you some (((hugs))) - you must be so scared and tired.

Really bad migraine? Systemic strep? Something combined with Bell's Palsy? Maybe not just one thing.

Oh Lesley, I'm so sorry to hear how she's suffering....that must be awful for you to watch. I wish I could give you some idea or suggestion......Meningitis was my first thought too, but it's obviously not that. I have been thinking of you and I will continue to.......hoping to hear a 'good news' update very soon.

Could it be a reaction to any medication that she is taking? My allergy to sulfa ended up resulting in many of those symptoms during a course of a sulfa drug for a uti.

I have a friend who had Lupus which attacked the central nervous system (can't remember the real name) but her symptoms were similar. No weakness though. It took her years to be diagnosed.

I wonder if it's a really really really bad migraine. If it's bad enough (and I've learned each person is different), she could be having all those symptoms from it. Is the headache centralized to one area or all over?

It sounds very similar to when a former colleague developed Guillain-Barre syndrome. I think that it diagnosed with a spinal fluid - did they test for it?

I went to school with a girl one year, and she had something called FUO. Fever of unknown origin. She missed months of school. She had vertigo, couldn't stand up, had a high fever and then threw up. This happened day after day. She did not have a virus or bacterial infection and her doctor(s) were baffled. She was so sick and yet there was nothing anyone in the medical community could do for her.
I am not suggesting this is it. What your daughter might have is one of those weird things that they can't diagnose.

How scary. Her symptoms sound like something a friend's son went through. He was eventually diagnosed with Chiari Malformation. It's been a long year of trying different things for him to treat it. He just had surgery with the past few weeks. www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/chiari/detail_chiari.htmWhat are the symptoms of a Chiari malformation? Individuals with CM may complain of neck pain, balance problems, muscle weakness, numbness or other abnormal feelings in the arms or legs, dizziness, vision problems, difficulty swallowing, ringing or buzzing in the ears, hearing loss, vomiting, insomnia, depression, or headache made worse by coughing or straining. Hand coordination and fine motor skills may be affected. Symptoms may change for some individuals, depending on the buildup of CSF and resulting pressure on the tissues and nerves. Persons with a Type I CM may not have symptoms. Adolescents and adults who have CM but no symptoms initially may, later in life, develop signs of the disorder. Infants may have symptoms from any type of CM and may have difficulty swallowing, irritability when being fed, excessive drooling, a weak cry, gagging or vomiting, arm weakness, a stiff neck, breathing problems, developmental delays, and an inability to gain weight.

Since she has had CT scans and an MRI - the tests used to diagnose CM - it couldn't hurt to ask the docs if they ruled it out when looking at the scans. They wouldn't need to do additional testing.

So sorry you're going through this with her. I hope she gets better quick. Not sure how old she is, but I was hospitalized for similar symptoms several years ago and they said I had intractable migraine and they blasted it with IV dihydroergotamine. They said they use it for people in their 20s. Just my story, thought I'd share in case it might help.
