You can often find little journals for people to track the books they've been reading. I actually think there was one on clearance at Target when I was there last week.
A little booklight.

Right now a kindle is on sale at Amazon for $59. A book light, a neck pillow, a gift card to Barnes and Noble, a journal, a book mark or book clip, a cool but inexpensive picture book from the discounted books section - anything from pictures of Austria to cupcakes. With the kindle the entire basket would cost about $100 and likely bring much more! www.amazon.com/ref=nav_prmlogo

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who didn't know! I googled and they are basically small bookmarks.

You all are awesome! I may need to do two baskets. LOL I just found some fun things on Amazon...like a mug with quotes from literature, and a tote bag that says, "I like big books, I cannot lie."
Thanks for your suggestions! I had a few ideas for baskets I was trying to decide between, but I am pretty sure I am going to go with the book theme.

If you have an independent bookstore near you, go in and see if you can get a gift card. They may even have some stuff to give you for your auction. It's a win-win because they get publicity and you get pure profit.
Definitely include a booklight and try to stick with a theme for the basket. In other words, don't mix romances, war novels, and science fiction. If you do a romance book basket, you'd include candles and tea. If you do children's book, throw in some stuffed animals and hot chocolate.

Some gummy worms, just for fun! If you purchase the Kindle, an Amazon gc would be nice. And as always, a bag of Dove dark chocolate

You've been given some great suggestions, I just wanted to add that if you are making the basket for a school fundraiser contact your local Barnes & Noble Community Relations Manager and ask for a donation.
I was given our local CRM's card by an employee in the store and made my request via email. It was the most painless donation request I've ever made and she replied that a box would be waiting for me in the store on XXX date. I believe they will make 1 donation per school per year. The box was a real mix of products - note cards, puzzles, games as well as books - that we used in multiple theme baskets.

If your local library uses Overdrive Media or some sort of e-book lending, include instructions for that as well. I can't afford to buy a ton of books, so I borrow ebooks from the library. That knowledge would get me to bid on your basket.

It's a win-win because they get publicity and you get pure profit. I disagree with hitting up the local independent stores for free stuff in the name of publicity. They already have to compete with Amazon and B&N. If you want to support the local businesses, purchase a GC from them for the basket, and hit up the big stores for free stuff.

I instantly thought of gummy worms as a previous poster said! They would be cute in there. You could alter the top of the package with a piece of cardstock and a die cut apple with a worm coming out (cutsy, since it's for a school fundraiser, I think it fits the theme).

I might consider putting it in a book bag rather than a basket, something to tote the books around in the future.

Thanks so much for all of the ideas! I knew you all would have some good ones!
It is not for a school fundraiser, but I still want it to be fun. I work for a non-profit organization, and it's for our gala that is coming up in April. I'll keep you all posted on what I end up with. Thank you again!!

I meant that she should buy a gift card. Then, ask if they had anything to donate. The independent I go to often gives away copies of books with purchase. They might have some books that would otherwise be sent back to the publisher or thrown out.

In my local area it seems that every school PTA expects the local businesses to donate to every fundraiser in the name of free publicity. When in fact everyone shops in Costco and Target instead of supporting local business. Just a pet peeve of mine:)
