Those are the shape of the barrel, and each comes with different nibs.
Classic is a square barrel with a chisel end and a bullet point.
Sketch is an oval barrel with a brush end and a chisel end (I think the chisel is smaller than on the classic).
Ciao is a round barrel with a brush end and a chisel end. The ciao holds less ink than the sketch.
I like the sketches best: comfy to hold and I like the brush end.

When I started I didn't know what to get. Then, I researched and decided on Sketch. I have Sketch because they have the most colors and fit the airbrush system.
The tips are changeable and they are refillable too!

what do you mean "fit the airbrush system?" It is "spray" system so you can color larger areas. It looks like this: copic airbrush system.
This link shows what it looks like. Don't be scared off by the air compressor. You don't need that Ellen Hutson blog scroll down towards the bottom

I use the air brush system for spraying backgrounds.
If you get a chance take a class or two. You will learn a lot!

thanks, Emily! so, for trying to color a stamped image, one could use whichever that person prefers? they don't have different purposes, then. correct? I don't think anyone specifically answered this, but yeah, they all color the same. It's all the same ink inside them. Whichever one you like to use most. Oh, I do believe that you can get different nib types: like, the sketches come with the brush and chisel, but I think you can buy a bullet (fine point) nib and switch them out. Personally, I think that is too much work. But if something is holding you back like, "oh, I like the sketch but I don't like the tips," you can do something about that. I have all three types in my collection. Mostly sketch, but sometimes I'd find a deal on the other kinds, so I added them.

I'm not sure someone just starting into copics should be worried about the airbrush system What do you intend to use them for? Lots of colouring and art? Or more general scrapbook purposes? I use mine a LOT to: -change colours of thickers, -change colour of stickers (especially alpha stickers, like jillybean, basic grey) -change colour of die cuts -cut out white die cuts with my cameo then colour to match my page -change anything stark white to beige to match my pp better So I really don't care if I have sketch versus ciao. I've generally preferred to buy 2 ciaos instead of 1 sketch to get more colours!!! However, there are MORE COLOURS with the sketch line, so I have a lot of those as well.

You don't need the airbrush system but if you do, get the Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Marker Spritzer. It is only about $15 and I got mine at Joanns.com for half price. It is a little hard to find at Joanns because they misspelled spritzer as Sprizter. Patter is my "enabler" and thank goodness she pointed out it was misspelled so I could find it! It works with most markers. You can take the inside part out for larger markers and the Copic Sketch markers. Not as smooth as an airbrush system but for the difference in price, I don't care! It does work well for an inexpensive way to spray Copics. Ranger's Tim Holtz Spritzer

Noooo if you're just starting you don't "need" the airbrush system. I just knew that I would "need" it so I planned ahead by getting the Sketch markers. I also chose Sketch because they had the most colors.
I didn't want to mix marker types. That's me! It would of made me nuts to have 2 or 3 different types of Copics.

Keep in mind sketch have the most color choices, but I've been happy with the array of colors I've gotten with my ciaos. A great place to buy them is Oozak.com or Blick art stores, if you have one nearby. They both sell them for under msrp.
