Hopefully in the next few weeks the weather will finally begin to warm and we will start having garage sales in our area. Not sure whether the season has started for others yet or not. Either way, what kinds of things will you be looking for this year? I already know what some of you collect, lady head vases, Shiny Brite ornaments, furniture to repurpose, cool items for yard art, etc. but have probably forgotten others. This year I am going to try reallllly hard not to buy any purses or high heeled shoes. Well, maybe if they are extra special and I just 'have' to have them. Fashion accessories that are small and easy to store like scarves, hats, gloves and jewelry always warrant a look. I will be searching for some decor accent pieces for my living and dining room: table linens, lamp shade, glassware, dishes, candles, vases, figurines, etc. in my spring and summer colours of turquoise, lime green, orange and dark pink. I also want to keep an eye out for a couple of pictures or canvases to incorporate those colours. I'd like to replace some the picture frames displaying the family photos on our buffet as well. As always I will on the look out for vintage items: toys from my childhood, jewelry, typewriters, glass Christmas ornaments, cameras, luggage, clothing, aprons, books, etc. Things that would make cute photo props are always of interest. As are pretty umbrellas. I'd like to get a nice stand, or over-sized vase or something to replace the wicker one that I currently have storing them by our front door. I might add a few seasonal/holiday decor items, especially for Valentine's or Easter, since I don't have too many. Anyone else getting excited for yard sale season yet? Started yard saling yet? Do you have a list of things you will be looking for this year?

My dd is moving to an unfurnished apartment in August so we are going to have a lot of fun at yard sales this summer! I haven't really done sales since my kids were little, although I will stop at one if I see books. Yeah, like I need more books. But anyway, one of the girls already has a couch and chair, another has a table and chairs for eating. That's it. We're going to split up the list (there are four girls) and do the yard sale rounds. Thankfully all four girls and their mothers are yard sale fans.

I need hand weights that are bigger than 5 pounds, but I would love to not pay retail for them. And I'm always on the lookout for Fiestaware and Longaberger baskets.

Monklady123 garage sales are perfect for furnishing a first place! I hope you find lots of great deals.
Bianca42 I wish you luck in your searches. I hear about Longaberger baskets from Peas, but have never heard of them here, so I don't think they are available in Canada.

I generally don't have anything in mind. I always says that I'll know it when I see it. That's my thinking for thrift stores too. P.S. I love reading about the deals you get heartcat!

Nothing! Lol I spent the day in my mom's house and feel extra claustrophobic now. She has dust catchers all over the place and more china and vases than we would ever need and keeps buying more at yard sales and thrift stores. The dust and just overwhelmingness of it all has made me want to throw so much away. I am now cringing for yardsale season because everytime we go over there, there is more "stuff" (throw pillows, doilies, etc.) and it is so daggone uncomfortable to be in. Ugh. Sorry for my vent-but for me yard sale season is not something to look forward to

Besides Pyrex and the Corning/Pyrex dishes that match the Pyrex patterns I am looking for whatever strikes my fancy. We are moving to a new house that is much larger than our current one and I am already on the look out for cool pieces of furniture or something that I can decorate with.

I might start going to more sales to find doilies. At the quilt show there were some gorgeous doilie quilts.

I generally don't have anything in mind. I always says that I'll know it when I see it. That's my thinking for thrift stores too. P.S. I love reading about the deals you get heartcat! I've found several things using the I'll know it when I see it idea. The best one was a basket. I spotted it as I was getting out of the car. It was a large basket and when I got closer it had games in it. The price was $3 for the basket and everything inside. I didn't know what the basket was, but I knew I had to have. It turned out to be a Ghana Bolga market basket and I love it. There are a few things I will be looking for when garage sale season starts. I'm always looking for sweaters to unravel for yarn. Can't beat a sweaters worth of yarn in merino, lambs wool or cashmere for a pittance. (I'm currently crocheting a baby blanket out yarn unraveled from a $2 sweater. I'll have enough for the blanket with yarn left over for at least a hat and booties if not a sweater, too.) I'm always looking for decorative stuff for this house. We've only been in this house a year and a half and it's still pretty bare. Not much of what I had fit in with what I wanted to do in this house. We are also putting up a bigger pool this year and need some stuff for that area. I'll also be looking for clothing for myself. I've lost about 25 lbs since Thanksgiving and nothing fits. I need things to wear, but I don't want to buy new stuff because I am still losing.

We *finally* finished my son's basement bedroom so I'm allowed to go to yard sales now. The plan is to find items for the living room. A console table with concealed storage, storage containers that will fit better in an old cupboard. It is where I'm storing scrapbook supplies. I'm thinking of taking the glass out of the doors and either adding sheet metal or chicken wire. I have had an old screen door forever and I want to put sheet metal in it and display photos. I'll look for that on the local facebook group. I hope to keep my son out of that room and put decor above the entertainment center. Anywhere else would be too low for him to get into.
I also want to look for decor items for Easter, 4th of July, Valentine's Day, and maybe St. Patrick's Day. However, I am not going to do that until I get boxes pared down in my basement.

I always have some sort of outlandish item in mind like...a thigh master or vintage salt and pepper shakers or an airplane propeller,so when they ask me if I am looking for anything they can say they don't have it and I don't feel bad for not buying anything. Sometimes I just like to look and I will know it when I see it.

My granddaughter is in her first apartment(by herself) and will be having a baby boy this summer so there are lots of things I am on the lookout for! I am going to keep the baby while she works, so I will need things for my house, too.
It seems like one thing leads to another. We are going to take the entertainment center out of the spare bedroom to have room for a crib, which means that I "have" to redecorate the whole room. I am so excited!

This is where I learned how to do it: How to unravel a sweater for yarn. The secret is in the seams. Surged seams will give bits and pieces of yarn. Seams that look like they are 2 braids side by side that are sewn up are what you want.

I like your tactic, I like to look, and know it when I see it too.

Miss_Lizzie.
Shescrafty, I am sorry that garage saling has been a negative thing for you. I wonder what I would think of your mom's place? I know that a lot of what some people consider clutter, I actually like (think overflowing shabby chic, or country clutter). And that what some people love, minimalist, I can find cold and devoid of personality. My dh is more of a minimalist than I am, so I try not to have things 'too' cluttered, and do cycle things out every so often and purge.
Khaleesi, congratulations on the new house! How fun that you will have more space and can go thrifting for some things to personalize it. I hope that you'll share photos on upcoming threads.
Megmc, I saw a table runner on pinterest that was made out of doilies and thought that was a neat idea. I have not seen a quilt, but bet that would be amazing.
Scrapsotime, congrats on your weight loss! Yard sales and thrift stores can be such a great source for clothing. I love your idea about repurposing sweaters. I don't knit, but have a friend who does. I will have to share this tip with her and ask whether she'd like me to keep an eye out for sweaters for her.
Coilstrand you have some neat projects in mind! Hopefully you'll be able to put some of those plans into action, and when you do, I'd love if you could share photos with us.
The Birdhouse Lady, it's funny that you mention Thigh Masters as an outlandish item. We see them EVERYWHERE here, lol!
Grammanisi, congratulations on the upcoming birth of your great-grandchild! Have fun redecorating! Yard sales are perfect for baby items.
Anonrefugee, I always wonder about them when I see them too, lol.
**GypsyGirl** I 'have' to ask....why do you have an airplane propeller lying around?!
Thanks for replying, everyone.
As it turns out there is a church rummage sale this weekend! So hopefully I'll have the first thread of the season Saturday or Sunday. Four more sleeps, lol!

I'm looking for old ceiling fan blades and table legs to make some of these dragonflies. I want to make these for my geology class. Dragonflies in the Carboniferous had wingspans of up to 6', and making these will give students an idea of how big they actually were.

I am trying not to just buy 'stuff'.. I will be on the outlook for Fiesta dishes and books for me or my daughters (although I will be picky about six year old dd.. I found at least 50 books from a teacher last year and our school just gave me a whole stack for her, so she has more than enough for awhile.)
Otherwise, I am going to really try not to just buy stuff just cause I think it is cute.

I usually buy up all kinds of kitchen stuff, but with eating raw we only use maybe 1-2 pots/pans 2-3 times a month so that's out. I would love to find a great set of dishes and i'm about to the point for my third new wardrobe this year so i'll be looking for some clothes to get me through. That's usually a challenge around here.

Another sentence you can really only find here. I need to find a way to work this exact sentence into a conversation.
I might look for american sweetheart monax china. More likely to find it in an antique store or auction, but fun to always check.

My sister's neighborhood is having a garage sale put together by a local realtor. I'm not looking for anything but she and I will drive around just to enjoy the morning and see what's out there. I like things for the yard and so does she. Guess we will be fighting over the same stuff.

I'm hoping to find a few light globes (like the plain builder's grade white glass globes). I picked up a couple last year at a yard sale for a quarter each and made glass mosaic garden globes like the mosaic bowling balls that I'd seen on Pinterest. I finished one over the weekend in blue/green glass with beads and flat backed marbles, it happens to be perfect size for a small LED tap light to go inside so it glows lights up too.

I just had a garage sale of my vintage booth stuff. We are moving to a 1857 farmhouse style home in a small town about an hour from where I am now. About 200 sq ft smaller, and a long city lot. I am on 3 acres now, so a big change.
I will look for fiesta, fire king, hazel atlas and pyrex in pink or turquoise or promos I dont have. Garden decor, vintage holiday items. Also vintage kitchen, salt and peppers, primitive items to decorate with...will be more selective than I have in the past since I dont resell anymore.

I probably won't go to many this year. I am trying to pare down my house by half so I don't want to bring too much home! However, I do look for unusual antiques that strike me, art (rarely find anything), fabrics that can work for backdrops, cool photography props. I never buy clothes, although I might consider it this year since I'm losing weight.
