Just diagnosed yesterday. I am to take Prilosec. I am in so much pain. I had a hot dog today (that is all) and my heartburn is horrible. Any websites, tips, books you can recommend? Thanks.

I have been through the rounds with several of the medications. I have found that I can't take it every day or I end up with extreme diarrhea (Sorry, TMI I know). I also still reflux, it just isn't acidic any more. You'll find foods that trigger it worse than others - depending on what the hotdog is made of, they can be really bad. I don't have any sites or books, I just try things to see what works and what to avoid. Once you get the acid under control regularly, it does get better. Hang in there!

I do. I take something that the dr prescribes...protonic? Can't remember the name. I would love to go back to Nexium now that it's OTC, but it's still pretty pricy.
Mine has just been kind of hit and miss as to what causes me problems and what doesn't. But anything close to bedtime is a problem, and I have to sleep on more pillows than I would like.

Yes...in fact, I just had to increase my dosage of omeprarzole from 20mg to 40mg. I had been at 20mg for a couple of years but in the last couple of months I was still waking up with a sour stomach and just didn't feel good, so my doctor upped the dosage and that has done the trick.

I do. I think the best thing you can do is take the medication and follow the diet. For me, once I started to feel better, the dietary sacrifices became easier. I also sleep with my bed slightly elevated.
I hope you feel better soon.

It took me a long time to figure out that carbonated drinks were my trigger. My GERD really lessened when I cut that out.

Me. I don't take meds, only Tums when it's really bad.
I really try to avoid my trigger foods: Indian food (waah - I love curry); Italian food (particularly things with lots of garlic); chocolate; coffee. Basically, anything very acidic. Also, I don't know if this is scientific in any way, but foods with wheat make me much worse. Give me a meatball, I'm fine. Give me it with a piece of Italian bread, and I'm reaching for the Tums.

Hang in there, the meds will work but it may take a while for you to feel better.

Wheat aggravates me as well. (and sadly...chocolate)

I too just try to watch my diet, but mine has gotten worse lately. I really need to have my annual checkup and try to talk with the doctor about doing a checkup. It's been 5 years since my original diagnosis.

I did. Mine was actually related to my ovarian cancer diagnosis. I also take (took) Prilosec. It did take a few days for me to really feel the effect. I also slept with my head and chest elevated and that seemed to help too.

I do... mine is pretty well managed with omeprazole (prilosec, I think). I take zantac (ranitidine?) when I have a breakthrough episode.

Off topic, but I just wanted to say Gardengoddess - I LOVE your avatar! It's my all time favorite gif.....wouldn't you just want to do that to someone? lol I wish I could have controlled my GERD with diet, but it was EVERYTHING, even water with me, so I had no choice but to rely on medication and it's been a life changer.

Oh I sure do and was diagnosed at 10. Hereditary oh joy. I've basically been on a variety of medications throughout the years. At this point I take 40 mg Protonix daily and just be aware of triggers, lifestyle such as keeping up with a good cardio regimen or sometimes suffer when my meds aren't cutting it that day/week. I'm 5 months pregnant and it's beyond a bitch to manage.
I hear you re: water. Water, banana, slice of bread or crackers would bring the acid up.

Be careful and don't ignore the pain. I've had Barrett's esophagus for several yrs now..and gerd can lead to Barrett's.. And Barrett's can lead to cancer..
