I am in so much pain. I feel ridiculous but I'm am nearly out of my mind with it. Overly dramatic? Yes, yes it is and I feel stupid.
I had a rapid strep done this morning. It was negative. I was give a lidocaine gargle but it's not touching it. Sore throat lozenges are making it worse.
What else can I do? I had a low grade fever at the urgent care and am taking ibuprofen as directed.
UPDATE: at hubby's insistence, I went to urgent care again today. I was not at home yesterday when I went (at a horse show 2.5 hours away) so that meant going to a different one. This doc decided it was a likely allergy induced with a secondary sinus infection. Was sent home with augmentin and codeine cough syrup. And instructions to take allergy meds along with decongestant.

a warm salt water gargle? Also make sure you don't have any post nasal drip going on. If you do a decongestant with antihistime will help.

So, I normally drink iced vanilla lattes at starbucks. Hot drinks make me feel like I am having a hot flash. But on the rare occasions where I get a sore throat, I will switch to a hot caramel macchiato. Give it a good stir to incorporate all the ingredients. The milk and melted caramel are very soothing (be sure they cool a bit to drinkable, or you'll be dealing with a BURNED sore throat). And I think something about caffeine is beneficial, too.
Tea with some honey will accomplish the same thing.
Warm salt water is said to help, like volt suggested.
And last time I was sick, I had to give in and get halls cough drops. With the gross eucalyptus. But I was desperate. And they helped a little.
Feel better soon!
(Oh, and PS: not to be the bearer of bad news, but if you have what I had, it starts with that sore throat. 48 hours almost exactly. But next will come the congestion in your head. Stock up on tissues, vaporub, and the nasal spray. But the good news is that other than the congestion, the rest of you will feel ship-shape.)

Stay away from sugar. Gargle with salt water. 1 tsp. in 8 oz. gargle in the back of your throat.
Lemon with warm water. Honey. Good luck!

Any chance that you do have strep even though the rapid test was negative?? Oh and chocolate helps everything...

{slight hijack} When I was a kid my Mom bought that spray in your throat stuff that was supposed to numb your throat so it wouldn't hurt to swallow. It came in red or green. It was disgusting. You were supposed to spray it down your throat, but of course it would spray on your tongue instead. {shudder} YUCK!
OP, for a sore throat I like to squeeze a lemon in hot water, with just a touch of honey. And take a couple of Tylenol.

At this time of year, I t's probably post nasal drip. I agree with a decongestant. And warm salt water. And Cloraseptic throat lozenges. And the throat spray that numbs your throat. Every year, mid May, this is me for a week. I feel like I'm counting down to death right now. I truly hate it. My throat is so sore, it actually bleeds.
The throat spray has an adapter now, so it will spray the back of your throat rather than your tongue. It gives some relief.

Thanks everyone. The fever is higher despite meds. Salt gargle seems to help some along hot lemon zinger tea with honey. If it's not strep I'll be surprised. Just praying for some sleep now.

It might be too late, but this is what I always do when I am getting a sore throat. If you catch it early, it really helps. In fact, I felt my throat getting sore yesterday and used this gargle every few hours. It knocked it out.
1 cup water 1 tsp hydrogen peroxide 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking soda.
It's awful, but it works if you do it soon enough. You have to use it every couple of hours.

I'm so sorry you're feeling so horribly. My brother and I had strep many times as young children. We routinely had to do more than one strep test because it would be negative one day, and then positive the next.
That throat spray is wonderful although it tastes horrible. There are some new ones with lots of lidocaine.
Honey is the best because it's a natural antibiotic and helps coat the throat to soothe it. The acid in lemon also helps kill the germs and makes the tea taste so good.
I've actually read recent reports that chocolate helps by coating the throat. The best way to get chocolate to help is to get a nice chocolate that you like to suck on and let it melt in your mouth.
Surprisingly, the worst thing for allergies and throat stuff is dairy. While it does help coat the throat and feels so good, dairy can cause more phlegm and drainage as well as make the drip worst.
I lost my voice after my ERCP because I was given general anesthesia and had so many instruments down my throat. The recommended the lidocaine spray, but ice cream helped me the most. My allergies weren't bothering me, so I got to enjoy the dairy without it making everything worse.
I also like pudding. I even discovered that you don't have to blend pudding for 2 minutes to get it to set. Just make sure the powder and milk are combined well and let the mixture sit for 2-4 minutes. Yum. Sometimes I add a bit extra milk to make it easier to eat when your throat hurts.

Mono?
ETA: sorry, didn't mean to not suggest anything. Try some Advil or Tylenol. Mono was the worst sore throat I ever had. Way worse than strep.

I've had the negative test turn out to be positive too. I've also went in swearing it was strep because my throat felt like raw meat and it was post nasal drip. Either way, sorry for your suffering. Three Advil every 6 hours and lots of icy cold stuff. And try some Benadryl just in case it is the post nasal drip. Plus you'll take a nice nap. Feel better soon.

I buy the small bottle at the drug store (with the little dropper part) and put several drops in a bit (little bit) of warm water. the bottles are just a few dollars. I was raised doing this. mom couldn't afford to take us to the doctor all the time (4 kids) so he told her to do this. I've done it all my adult life too.
you can also buy betadine gargle. yrs ago I found it at walgreens and it was 12.00 a bottle... I'm too cheap for that.

Earl Grey tea with lemon and hone. I hate Earl Grey. I really hate it, but when I am sick with a sore throat and aches it works quickly. It works well for me. Morphine drip also works.

Your fever is higher? You have some sort of infection. I think you need to go back to urgent care or the ER tonight. A rapid strep can be negative and you still have strep. Or it could be a sinus infection. Whatever it is, a rising fever indicates an infection, assuming it isn't the flu. (Are you achy anywhere else?).

I concur w/those advising you to go back to urgent care this weekend. If you do have a bacterial something the sooner you get meds the better. I'm sorry you're in pain.

Yes, I was wondering about your tonsils also. I had tonsillitis so bad that they gave me Vicodin in urgent care to use until the antibiotics kicked in. I hope you can find some relief.

Our doc always does the rapid strep test in the office but also sends it off because of the false negative risk. I would definitely get back to urgent care. Praying you feel better fast! That is the worst!

I know you're past the initial stage but just for future - the absolute SECOND I feel a sore throat coming on, I take an echinacea 500 mg. capsule and chew about 2 or 3 of the kids' Vitamin C tablets that I keep here for when they stay over. I repeat this about every 3 or 4 hours for a day or two. It seems to work for me. I've not had a bad bout of inflamed/sore/raging pain in my throat for years but I remember how awful it is. The only thing that gave me any relief, other than pain meds was warm salt water gargle every time I thought of it. I even would keep a glass of salt water in the bathroom for when I got up at night. Hope you're feeling better soon.
