For shit's sake--stop pushing your conspiracy theories on my kids!
My mom is absolutely convinced Pres. Obama wasn't born here, never produced his birth certificate, so he has no right to even be President. She has been very, very vocal about this since he ran for his first term. I won't even go into the other things she's convinced of. I really try to shrug it off.
My dd had an extra credit question in History-What state was Pres. Obama born?
Her answer: he wasn't born in the U.S. DD absolutely, definitely got that from my mother.
My mom is absolutely entitled to her opinions, theories, etc., but they tend to be so radical, and she goes off into these rants, and I can't even stand to listen.
I'm totally not into politics, stay away from topics here since I really don't belong in those conversations. But this has just really ticked me OFF.
If, and when, I decide to bring this up to my mom, she's gonna say the schools are hiding the truth, or some form of that. Ugh.
I really, truly, don't want to tick anyone off here. I know this is a hot topic, and people feel very strongly about it. I don't want to criticize those that feel the same. But to me, it's the point of what's being tought, and what my mother is a firm believer in and convincing my kids of the same.
A question: if your kid was asked that question, what would you think/expect them to answer with?
Please go easy on me, lol.

I'm sorry you have to deal with that. I'm not an Obama fan, but I don't have these issues. My MOM and DAD do, and it drives me NUTS!!!!

I think it's time to throw your mother under the bus and just be honest with your kids. Grandma is a few bricks short of a load and has no critical thinking skills. It's a good time to teach you children critical thinking skills and how to do their own thinking after gathering info on any subject. I DO feel your pain. That would piss me off.

My kids know Obama was born in Hawaii, although I doubt they know where any other president was born. That's because the crazies insist he wasn't and it's in the news constantly. Wasn't Ted Cruz born in Canada? He can run for office. So I'm not sure why your mom is all up in arms.

Do we have the same mother ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg) . I mentioned in another thread that my mom was absolutely convinced we'd all be living in tent cities under martial law within a year after Obama was first elected. I haven't been around her enough since to expose me or my kids to further craziness, but I have little doubt she's actually disappointed that all of that hasn't come to pass. I'm sorry your daughter are picking that up too. I guess all you can do us gently correct her, maybe show her some evidence to back up the truth or at least let her come to a better informed opinion on her own, and tell her even older people can be wrong in their views sometimes.

I'm pretty sure they both know he was born in Hawaii, but, they are at school I can't ask til later. They are sophomore and senior.

During the first years of my marriage, I had to listen to my MIL discuss her belief in ghosts visiting their house and that someone was sneaking into her home and putting something in her coffee grounds for at least 5 to 7 years; and MIL just stopped mentioning this. So, there is hope that she will drop it or just move on to something else. My MIL (of 21 years now) has turned out to be very smart lady so I don't know what was going on with her during those years.

I'm not very political either, so it drives me absolutely CRAZY when one of my friends goes all radical on me (regardless of affiliation). I had one friend that kept forwarding to me all of these political conspiracy theory emails that were really over the top. I finally had to risk offending her to tell her to just STOP, because I don't read them, don't believe them and they make me think she's nuts because she obviously DOES believe them or she wouldn't keep forwarding them. But then again, that's the same friend that would send me all the emails warning about bogus things that had been completely debunked by Snopes.com... ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Ui47LhQw2NqWVWNNqtfM.jpg) When election season rolls around, I like checking things I hear and read on politifact.com. They seem pretty unbiased.

Is skybar your mother?
Seriously, I do feel your pain. My dad spewed this kind of ridiculousness in his later years-to the point of me having to threaten to block his emails, and keep the kids from talking to him on the phone.
This is what I had to do as well. I had to tell them the exact same thing. They did learn a lot about critical thinking skills, checking sources, etc. though. Thankfully, they were teens by the time he started his crazy Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, et. al obsessions.

This made me laugh. My 80 year old Dad is the same way. When he starts about the conspiracy theories, I just tune out.

I would be so embarrassed if my child answered that question that way. My mil and her husband are crazy conspiracy theorists, and we have always made sure that ds knows that. I think he would know the answer was Hawaii, but honestly, how many people know where ANY president was born other than Abe Lincoln?

I have had the granny is off her rocker conversation with them, so I am somewhat surprised she answered with that. DH and I have told both our kids to listen, learn, research, etc., and form their own opinions; grandma isn't the be all, end all when it comes to Pres. Obama, democrats, etc.
It is so friggin' frustrating.
I remember when Michelle Obama wore that blue or purple nail polish I believe at the Inauguration. My mom went on for about a month how inappropriate and unacceptable that was, and did we have a really heated argument over that. My dh came home and stepped into a landmine for that argument, her asking him what he thought, cornering my dd and explaining it was unacceptable, etc.
It's nutso stuff I tell ya.

I would sit down and have a talk with my kids.
Explain to them that this is a crazy fringe belief and is not rational.
I would also explain that there is more than one way to be a U.S. citizen and even if Obama wasn't born in Hawaii, he was born to an American citizen mother, which makes him a natural born US citizen meeting the qualifications to be president. Which makes the birthers even MORE crazy.

I'm not an Obama fan but at this stage in his presidency it doesn't even matter where he was born. When Ebola was the big news My mother was convinced it was airborne and people could catch it like a cold. Experts saying otherwise didn't make a difference.

Well, I think it's obvious you don't hang around in the political threads. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Ivm7lm0DayrhoRpwvCeH.jpg) Otherwise, you would be aware that this really isn't a controversial topic, even here. I can count on one hand the number of political peas who actually belief that tripe. Liberals and conservatives alike pretty much agree/accept that Pres. Obama was born in Hawaii. Unless they're faking me out. hmmm ...

I was at dinner with some friends I used to work with at a school and for some reason his BC came up (not by me) and all three of them were adamant that he is not a US citizen. I said just like the Teacher's Lounge, I wasn't going to discuss politics, or religion!

I try to steer clear of people who drink the kool aid on either end of the political spectrum, but I happen to have some close friends and some family member in that category -- on both ends. Most of the time I just stay quiet and let them talk or email, but every now and then when it gets really persistent or just plain crazy, I can't keep the words inside my mouth and out they fly.

We learn to be more open-minded, on both sides of the aisle.

We don't talk about politics at home. Ever. I even worked for someone highly political and didn't know it ( it was many years ago). My dad is a _______ I guess, and I am a _______ and my mother is undecided? The dogs are opportunist capitalists.
We just don't talk about politics, ever.

@devildog - I could have written nearly every sentence of your post except substituted my dad for your mother. I am also not political and my dad is always trying to force anti Obama propaganda books down my throat. we all have opinions just like we all have buttonholes but I choose to share neither, most of the time. I avoid political talk like it is the plague.
