Or not, I don't really care. Mostly I'm just really tired and trying to entertain myself so I don't fall asleep at an embarrassingly early time on a Friday night lol. The morning show that I listen to on the radio had this on the other day. I called in as apparently at the moment I felt strongly about it lol. One of the deejays was annoyed by people that use the self check out lane for more than just a few things. Even those that don't have an item limit she feels you should stick to ten or under because they can be problematic, people don't know how to use them and the lines back up. I disagreed, though I guess it could depend on several factors. For me I do my grocery shopping early on Sat morning. The grocery store in my small but not tiny town usually only has one regular lane open then five self check out lanes. Only one of the self check out lanes has a 10 item limit, the other four have no limits. Usually when I am ready to check out there will be a line of 2-3 people in the regular lane and the self check out lanes are empty. So I don't see the issue of using the self check out lanes even when I have a cart full. Even if it's busier, I still don't really see much of an issue with it. Honestly I'd rather use the regular lanes but not if there is only or or two of them open and they have lines when the self check out lanes don't.

I've always assumed there was an unwritten rule that you should treat it as an express lane, as an 15 items or fewer. But I'm not the self check out lane police so it isn't really that high on my list of annoyances .

I don't care how many items you have as long as you know how to use the self-checkout and are speedy about it. I had rather be behind someone who has a basket full of things and knows how to use it, than be behind someone with five items and no clue.

I really dislike self checkout lanes anywhere so it doesn't matter to me how much someone has.

Personally I wouldn't use it for a cart full of groceries, for a couple of reasons. One, if I had a lot of produce I know I'd have trouble finding something and then I'd annoy people waiting behind me. I'm getting better at that though, thanks to dd's nagging at me to try it. lol But the second reason is that our conveyor belts become annoying when a lot of stuff piles up at the end. The whole thing stops and the register says "you must remove some groceries from the belt before we can continue". So I only use the self-check line when I have a lot of groceries if I have a kid with me to bag at the other end. If one of them is with me and I don't have piles of produce I can get through there pretty fast now. Go me.

I almost always go through the self checkout, even with a full week's worth of groceries (they have 4 unlimited lanes, and 6 12 item or less self checkouts). I go during the week when it's less crowded. I do it so I can bag my own stuff my way. I use reusable bags and like to bag them in a way that I can make as few trips to-from the trunk/house as possible.

Ours does, plus a sign at the end of the conveyer belt that says something like "I'm new, please be patient." Well, I've always thought there ought to be one we could put up in the self-checkout lane if we know we're not experienced with it, or we might have trouble with lots of produce, or whatever. Kind of like those "student driver" signs. lol

I don't use the self check as a matter of principle - I don't want to do a job myself if the staff cost to do it is figured into the price of my groceries. I'm pissy like that.
But if I do use it it's because I have one or two items and the regular lines are long.
I've never thought about how many items another person using the self check lane has, though.

But dd goes with me and bags while I'm scanning the items so by the time I'm done she's done. Our store has 12, 12 items or less self checkouts and 5 unlimited items checkouts and there is clear definition between the two.

In the area where I live, I have noticed that when all the self check outs are open there is usually only a lane or two with an actual cashier. I kind of get the impression that the store wants more people (regardless of items to be purchased) to use the self check out lanes. This is ONLY my OPINION, but I think they do it on purpose so they won't have to pay additional people to do the job that the consumer will do for free.

I was in a fifteen item lane yesterday. The couple in front of me had 34 items. Everyone behind them was peeved. Then they asked the cashier to split the bill in half so it took two payments. Perhaps they thought that meant they each only had 17 items? It held up our line for quite some time. I am very good about not going over the limit because it bothers me. If it isn't marked though, I don't think it matters.

My store has 4 self check out lanes. Two are 20 items or less and two are 40 items or less. I only use them if I have a few items. I don't mind scanning but I hate bagging.

Where I shop there are usually 6 express self check that have a limit. (12 I think?) There are usually about 6 self check lanes open that are unlimited. Yes I use the unlimited lane with a cart full of groceries. That's why it says unlimited.

At Meijer, they have lanes stating a certain number of items or less and they have lanes that say no item limit. I'm going to use them for whatever I want when they are labeled no item limit. I agree with the poster above who said she would prefer someone with a cartful who knows what they are doing over someone with a few items and no clue.

I used to avoid self-checkout lanes like the plague, but I've grown to love the ones at our Kroger. I go there a few times a week, so I never have a giant cart full---10 to 15 things, usually. I have noticed that most of the people using them have small loads, but it wouldn't bother me if someone had a larger one. They always have plenty of open spots. I think of self-checkout as something for people who feel they can handle things more efficiently and quickly on their own, rather than another express lane. They're also great for those days when you seek to avoid human interaction.

But that's just when I'm in a rotten mood. Other times, it just mildly pisses me off. I never go through the self-checker with more than 15 items, whether it says 15 items or not.

I don't think the OP of this post was in a self-checkout line but a items limit line. I go to the grocery almost daily because we live so close so I always go to the self-checkout line. I have more items than most but I'm fast and have memorized the codes for all the produce I buy regularly and if it's something I don't know, I know how to get it fast.

I was really mad when my grocery store turned the self-checkouts (four of them) into all 15 or less lines. Since I've been a cashier, I can do my whole cartful in less time than it takes an actual cashier to do the cartful. I pack the cart as I'm going based on how I want to unload it and how I want to pack the bags-- based on how my kitchen is.
It also means I can do the whole cartful faster than the people with 10 items or less who have no. freakin. clue. what they're doing.

I never use them, as they put people out of work. Where there used to be 6 people running cash registers, there is now one person overseeing 6 self check outs. That's 5 people out of work. I don't care HOW long I have to wait...I always go to a manned register.

I prefer the self checkout as well because I like my bags packed a certain way (bananas ON TOP ALWAYS!!!!).
And I detest when people who don't know how to use them try. So aggravating.

I am too holier than thou and will avoid the 10 items or less line even if she is free in case someone else sees me with more than 10 things. Then she will invite me over, THEN I will use the express check out. ONLY then. Like I said I am holier than thou. I do like the self check out lanes because they are usually faster for my one bag of apples. Just my opinion.

If you know what you are doing, I don't see an issue with doing a whole basket of groceries in the self check lane. Personally if I have a full basket I will go to the lanes with the cashiers, my feeling is that their salary is built into the cost of the groceries and they are not giving me a discount or paying me to do it myself.
If I have just a few items, and the lanes are busy, I will go to the self check lane

Ours does not have any limit signs but one side is clearly designed for a full load, with a spinner and many bags, while the other side only holds 2 bags plus a higher shelf for unbagged larger items. I exclusively use self-checkout and it never occurred to me that it was express only with limited quantities. I have violated a pea-rule without constructive knowledge. Oh, dear.
OTOH, I always put my cart away.

Our Kroger doesn't have a limit on their self checkout lanes, but they do have two lanes that are very obviously for those with less items (only two bag stations and not much counter space) and two that are obviously for those with lots of items (a rotating bag carousel with four bag stations and much more counter space to put bags on).
I go through with my weekly shopping but I know how to use it, so it doesn't take me long to check out - even with produce. I have my card ready to swipe and I know where most of the bar codes are to scan. Since they don't have baggers at every regular checkout, I'd wager I'm faster than the cashier who has to ring up my groceries and then bag them.

I exclusively use the self checkout lanes (no attitude and I prefer to bag my own groceries). I only go to the grocery store on Saturday or Sunday before 9 a.m., but I have never felt that they were only for a few items.
Interesting thread.

I prefer the self checkout when I have a ton of groceries - because the cashiers can NEVER bag my groceries properly!!! Its my biggest pet peeve & a big part of why I hate grocery shopping. They need to train them how to pack at our stores, seriously. And the self-packing stores are nowhere close to me so thats not an option. So yes I'll go to self checkout for tons of groceries - but my store has 8 self-check counters so its not like I'm hogging the only one.

Some food goes to the basement, some goes to the kitchen, some may go to the chest freezer, etc. There are a couple self-checkouts that are for small orders and I don't use those. There are also a couple 15-or-less lanes that I don't use. However, I'll use the unrestricted self-checkouts even if the store is busy because sorting my groceries as I bag them is a big deal to me. Those in a hurry can plainly see I've got a full cart and are more than welcome to get behind someone who only has a few things. It's not like I'm taking up more than one station. I do put my cart in the corral every time.
