I think if it had been any other team and QB we would never have heard about it. Judging by all the QBs that have said how they do this or that with their balls, I think they had to punish Brady as an example so that they won't be on TV telling what they do. That doesn't look good for the NFL. All was well and good for the NFL until this got legs and they couldn't let it go by. Lurkingsince2001, I think they had no choice but to suspend Peyton also because of how egregious the allegations. The money had to have come from some place that was being paid to the players. I do understand why you are comparing Peyton to BB. I just think it's apples to oranges on this. But, what do I know? Just my humble opinion. Eh . . . I think the entire NFL has become a joke. There are no actual rules and the only thing that matters is winning at all costs, and raking in those $$$. But all the fans who buy tickets, PPV, subscribe to the NFL channel, buy merchandise, etc. are the ones giving the NFL tacit approval of the way they're all conducting themselves. Every dime they spend is just a big *wink, wink, nudge nudge* As long as the money keeps rolling in, no one is going to make even the tiniest effort to change. Hence, all the token "punishments" and slaps on the wrist for every wrongdoer and scandal in the league. And there are too many to count/keep track of. The only thing that's going to get the league's attention is a serious hit to their revenue. Sadly, I don't think fans really care enough about right and wrong and truth and lies to send a message with their money. Nothing's going to change. And yeah, Rice should have been fined into oblivion and kicked off the team. No, out of the league.

I wonder if the difference in the penalties is that one players actions were in his personal life (and completely out of line for anyone to do) and the other players actions affected an actual game and possible outcome, making it more about the game itself. Im not sure how I feel about that above sentence either. I have always struggled with work punishing people for things they do in their private life and let those matters be taken care of by local law officials and prosecutors. On the other hand, I agree he should have been kicked out of the NFL simply because it sends a message that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated by people who choose to live public lives. But I think cheating in a sport shouldn't be allowed either and a few suspensions and a less than punishing fine isn't the answer either. How is this a punishment? He will still have endorsements, the team will still play and have a chance at the Superbowl.....I just don't see how this punishment works. But I supposed its better than the nothing I thought they would do

Another one not shocked by the taps on the wrist.
And I agree about nothing changing because people are still happily throwing money at the NFL.
I'm so over it all at this point. I had to give on football and most pro sports a long time ago.

Yep. That one was on the last football/deflateglate meme thread. They all cheat. Blatantly and unabashedly. And the $$$ just keep pouring in.

Beating someone is primarily the responsibility of the criminal justice system to punish and cheating or inappropriate behavior within the game is primarily the responsibility of the NFL to punish.

I'm not an NFL fan (in fact I loathe it with the power of a thousand suns) but I was listening to the drive show on the way home and the announcer is a huge NFL fan (just one of his faults LOL) and he was surprised that the punishment handed down was as hard as it was. He expected the NFL to deliver more of a slap on the wrist. After a longer discussion (which was actually interesting even though I really have no idea who Tom Brady is other than he seems to be an egotistical asshole) they both agreed that maybe the best punishment (among what was actually put down) would have been to declare the Super Bowl void, they have to give their rings back and in the records that Super Bowl would be declared vacant for this year. I thought it was an interesting perspective. It's all I've got and thought I would share. I was actually curious to see what the board would say when I heard this discussion.

Personally, I think the Patriots should have to vacate those wins. Is Tom Brady really going to be harmed by going without pay for 4 weeks? Are the Patriots even going to notice a million dollar fine? Nope.

I don't blame him for not turning over his text messages, they could be private messages in there. I'm sure they got the phone of the low staff member who was fired for deflating the balls and could see his end of the messages. Brady is still rich, but someone lost their job over this. Quite frankly they'd be dumb to be texting over this sort of thing anyway, seems to me more like an in-person conversation.

I don't get it. Was there evidence of anything? Last I heard, they said he "probably knew" or something like that. That doesn't sound like evidence to me.

Given the numerous accounts from current & former NFL quarterbacks about ball conditioning to meet individual preferences & the fact that Brady has played the game for most of his life, there is no doubt that he was aware & approved of the underinflated footballs. After all, if Brady was dissatisfied with the conditioning of the footballs, those equipment staff would not have been employed! It's unfortunate they were vilified & fired, while Brady gets an extra month of vacation to spend his multi-millions...
Immediately after the Patriots won the SuperBowl, the ATL Falcons were accused of & admitted to piping artificial crowd noise into the Georgia Dome during home games in the 2013 & 2014 seasons. Although the cheating obviously did not benefit the team with 3-5 records at home both seasons, the Falcons were fined $350,000, lost a 5th round draft pick for 2016, & the Marketing Director was suspended; the owner publicly took responsibility & denounced the team's actions. The Patriots, however, were caught cheating during a Playoff game that enabled them to participate in & win the Super Bowl (& have allegedly been accused of underinflating footballs in games since 2007). IMHO the punishment is not enough; the Coach should bear some responsibility, & the Playoff wins & Championship should be vacated!

If I was Tom Brady, there's no way I'd turn over my personal phone records. That stuff ALWAYS leaks out, even when the league promises to keep it confidential. See what happened in MLB. I don't really care what happens to him, the Patriots, or any other team. I do think that rapists, child abusers, animal abusers, murderers, and wife beaters should be kicked out forever. Criminal action or game action, it all reflects on the NFL.

somebody "most likely" knowing something is NOT the same as proof and the suspension was extremely harsh for something they "think" happened. if it was so obvious the ball was under-inflated, why didn't the officials notice it? answer: because it wasn't at all obvious.
with respect to the text messages, they had the locker room staff's text messages-couldn't they see both sides of the conversations??? I know when I look at my text messages I can see what I type and what the other person types.
I think the whole thing is bullshit and as for Brady being egotistical, the guy is a class act in my book, he's a true team player that cares deeply about the game.

A 4 game suspension. The team gets a $1 million fine and loss of 1 st round draft pick next year and 4th round pick in 2017. He got off light, should have been at least 6 games. Now to see what happens when they appeal. Yep...Brady is a total disgrace.

Whether it's politics, football, or reality tv, as long as people are willing to throw resources at trash, the trash will still come out on top.

Got off light? Hardly. Ray Rice beats his girlfriend unconscious, drags her out of an elevator and gets a 2 game suspension. Irrefutable proof on tape vs "more likely than not". Are they using him as an example? Could be. While I think there should have been punishment, I don't think a 4 game suspension, a 1million dollar fine and loss of draft picks fits the "crime". Oh well, Garrapallo will get some good playing time. He did get off light. You can`t compare the Rice situation. Certainly what Rice did was abhorrent. The thing is, it had nothing to do with the integrity of the game. It was a criminal matter and frankly I think only the criminal justice system should be doling out consequences for off-field behaviour. Ray Rice being a sleazebag in his personal life doesn`t impact the fairness of the outcome of a the game itself. Brady CHEATED. That impacts the game. They should have thrown the book at him.

...don't know if it's true, but this morning on the radio I heard that there was a Go Fund Me campaign for fans to contribute which is to 'help' them pay their one million dollar fine-- if it's true, that is absolute horsesh!t-- they don't NEED any money donated; they have plenty. And, they're going to be saving some money on the whole thing anyway, with Tom Brady suspended... but people would contribute to it, for sure.

CBS news story about the GoFundMe account... "want to help a multibillion dollar corporation pay a fine? Now's your chance!" ^^^ ...I'm pretty sure that is tongue in cheek on CBS's part...
so far they've raised $1310. Sad doesn't begin to cover this-- more like 'our society IS going to Hell in a handbasket after all' or something more like that.

This is the issue I have with all this. Deflating a ball is worse than hitting your GF - the NFL is sending the wrong message and it really pisses me off.
I'm not saying Brady is innocent...he knew those balls weren't right but to say what he did is worse than Ray Rice is just wrong.

Did someone say that what Brady did was worse than Ray Rice? I'm not asking to be snarky, I am honestly wondering if I missed it.
