And for a kid that has a high tolerance for pain, he's suffering. It doesn't help that he came down with a cold the night before last so he's not feeling great. He has a very limited list of foods that he'll eat. Last night he was able to eat mac and cheese but couldn't eat the hot dog or bread. This morning, he said the eggs hurt his teeth. I'm not sure if it was the heat from the eggs but I couldn't imagine scrambled eggs hurting your mouth, but then again I've never had braces. So I also bought pudding and obviously he was able to eat that. He doesn't eat soup or mashed potatoes. What other soft foods can I offer him? I know it's not a huge deal if he doesn't eat much for a few days but I feel bad for him. I told him I'd get him a muffin when I dropped the girls off at school this morning so hopefully he can eat that. ETA: Here's a pic of the boy yesterday after he got them put on before the pain had set in.

I remember mac and cheese hurting when I had braces, so I can see the eggs hurting. Milkshakes are good, and he if he is hungry enough, he will eat mashed potatoes. I remember chewing anything as being pretty painful first 2 days or so. If u can get him to eat anything, get some Advil into him, wait a half hour and feed him something else.

Oh the pain of new braces or tightened braces. There's nothing like it. Definitely give him Motrin. I remember getting a sandwich for lunch and not being able to bite it. Milkshakes are definitely good. Maybe Pediasure if he really doesn't want to eat.

Poor kid. Can he take anything for the pain? I hope he feels better tomorrow. He looks adorable in that picture.

Your whole set of teeth just ache right after they go on, or when they're tightened so even soft foods, the act of chewing, can be uncomfortable. Will he take advil or Tylenol? That might help a bit the first few days. And if brushing hurts, make sure he rinses/swishes with mouthwash or even warm water after eating to be sure to dislodge any stuck food.

Ugh..I am dreading this. My son is supposed to get braces this summer and he does not deal well with pain at all. He had a couple of teeth pulled a few years ago and he literally wept for about an hour after the pain medicine wore off. He refused to take any medicine but once he did, he was ok. Needless to say, I am not looking forward to braces.
I hope your son starts feeling better soon. Will he eat applesauce?

The day I got braces, my teeth hurt so much that all I could do was cut up some spaghetti (with sauce, but no meat) as small as I could, then take tiny bites and swallow it whole. That is one meal that I will never forget. My parents had taken me to Shoney's to get the all you can eat buffet for some dumb reason and there was literally nothing else that I could eat. What a waste, lol! I hope your poor DS feels better soon!

Cold drinks and cold foods, don't skip the ibuprofen on days1-2. My youngest can live on scrambled eggs, but not when he had braces tightened.

DS got braces on his top teeth in January and he typically has a pretty low pain threshold. So I knew I had to walk a fine line with him or he'd refuse to eat and really exaggerate the pain. I had full braces (& a lot more complicated than he does) for 3 years so I know what he's going through. I told him he gets 2 days after each adjustment of easy to eat foods. After that its back to normal. That was twice as long as what the orthodontist staff recommended. He also gets tylenol/advil prior to adjustments and for the first day and then as needed after that. He gets adjustments every 2 months. So he's been through 2 now. He surprised us all with how well he's done! He knew our expectations and what the ortho told him to expect. He's said it hasn't been as bad as he thought it would be! Yay! If everything goes as expected, he should be about 1/2 way done by now. Of course it looks like his bottom teeth have shifted, so he may end up back in braces for those down the road Oh and younger DS is going to be a much more complicated case oh my!

I guess both of my DDs have very high tolerances for pain because neither one of them ever complained about mouth pain and the youngest had a palate expander! I remember going through a lot of wax because of the braces would rub against the inside of their lips though. brandy327 I hope your son get so feeling better soon.

DDs got coupons from the ortho for free Blizzards after their first appointment. They couldn't do bread for the first week or so- they had problems with it mushing up and sticking to their hardware. I'd give him ice cream, yogurt, maybe lukewarm soup (tomato soup- no chunks), Ensure, Orange Julius, etc. The cold might hurt too, so he may prefer just lukewarm soft stuff. And lots of tylenol.

Aww, poor boy! It'll get better soon, I promise. Just keep the pain meds pumping for a few days.
In addition to what's already been suggested, you could try spaghetti-o's (without the meatballs) because they are super soft and essentially just slide right down. Stove Top stuffing might not be a bad idea either, if he will eat that (I lived on it after I had my wisdom teeth out). How about greek yogurt for some protein?

Awwww - you ladies are so nice!!
I forgot to mention - we are alternating Tylenol and Motrin. We've also been dealing with fever and he has epilepsy so I get nervous with fevers. He's been medicated round the clock since yesterday morning. Someone had given me the tip to medicate before the appt, which we did, thankfully!
Out of everything listed, the only thing he'll eat that was mentioned was pancakes. I'll ask him if he thinks he'll be able to eat those and if he can I'll make some. He was able to eat the muffin this morning but I still think it was a bit painful.
I've asked him if the braces are rubbing on the inside of his mouth or against his lips and he says he doesn't understand what I mean (he's on the spectrum and has trouble putting feelings into words) so I've been periodically checking his mouth for any spots that could be sore. So far, so good.
We have been brushing several times a day regardless of the pain. The ortho showed him pics of holes in teeth that weren't properly brushed and taken care of during orthodontics care. He's NOT a good brusher anyway (sensitive palate that makes him gag frequently) so we've upped the ante and bribed him with money to brush well. I've been helping and checking to make sure he's doing a good job.

it's tough for a couple days, that's for sure! part of it might be that his jaw is sore from having his mouth open while the work was being done?? I know that always hurt me...
my standard 'braces adjustment' dinner was always mac & cheese with pudding, or something similar... and I would make sure to take ibuprofen BEFORE my appointments.

Brandi, sometimes your teeth just ACHE! When I had my braces, the very act of rubbing my lips together after putting on my chapstick made 'em hurt! If you try to bite down, and you forget, it's almost like striking a nerve! it hurts! it's not the jaw, it's your actual teeth! poor kiddo - mine hurt in sympathy for him! even putting my tongue against my teeth could be uncomfortable!

My daughter is in pain for about 2 days after getting them tightened. We use Advil but she says it doesn't help much. She drinks smoothies, eats scrambled eggs, and somehow manages pb&j on soft bread with no crust (as long as it's super soft food she's OK). I forget sometimes and we make burgers or steak for dinner the night she gets them tightened....then I feel bad. I know the pain of braces....suffered myself.

now that I've been thinking about this, I do remember that while I had my braces, both very hot and very cold items hurt my teeth more than they used to-- I got used to eating my food pretty much room temperature during that time.
(PS- they may have told him this, but no one told me-- you make a ton of saliva right when the braces get put on, because they're a 'foreign object' and your body is trying to make spit to wash them loose... once your body gets used to them, the saliva production goes back to normal.)

Brandy, if you don't already use a Sonicare at home, you should seriously consider it while your kid(s) have braces. It has made a significant difference in both my own and in my girls' dental health. I am a huge proponent of it.
We share one toothbrush handle, and we each have our own toothbrush head. I replace them every three months, which is pricey but I feel that it is worth every penny.

When I had braces put on (age 12) I was in agony. My mother couldn't fathom that I would be in so much pain, and tried to get me to eat real food, which I just truly couldn't. I felt like I could barely open my mouth enough to put food in.
I think the best thing to help him eat is liquid foods. Milkshakes, Pediasure, smoothies.

*christine* This morning is the first time he's said that his mouth feels a little better. He hasn't gone to school in 2 days because of fever and generally just feeling crappy. He's all congested, coughing, constantly wiping his nose and he hasn't been sleeping well. He's home again today but I'm hopeful that he'll be able to go to school tomorrow. Thanks for asking!

My 15 year old daughter got braces put on almost a month ago. The only steps they did with hers was the expanders to make room for the brackets, which were put in 2 weeks before the braces. She had the brackets, bands, wires and everything done in one day. We were there for 3 and half hours or so. I would say she has a pretty high pain threshold, and she was miserable for a couple days, even taking ibuprofin. She ate yogurt, pudding, soup, oatmeal and the individual cups of mashed potatoes. Thankfully she hasn't seemed to have any hot/cold sensitivity, and has only had to use the wax twice I think. We have already had to buy more of the "Christmas trees" they gave her for cleaning food out them. I'm also going to get her Waterpik as recommended by the Ortho's assistant.

I've found that the liquigels work SO much better, so maybe you'd like to try those some time. (But they can upset an empty stomach, so be sure to eat a little something.)
